Alhamdulilah :)
:salam2:

Dear brothers and sisters, I am in my last year of college (alhamdulilah!) and I'm taking a capstone writing class (this class is a must for me to graduate). I'm supposed to do a writing project which I'm supposed to work on for the entire semester but I have no idea what I should do this project on. I am stuck on choosing a topic. Please help me, suggest your ideas to me. I will appreciate it so much!

Thanks

Assalaam alaikum,

Ok...what are the guidelines or rubrics...let's start with that...I usually like to start with the letter A when I teach the alphabet.

Well I can choose any topic of interest to me. For example, some people are doing memoirs, some are doing blogs...just anything which will be done over a long period of time (till the end of the semester). I don't think I want to do autobiographies or anything that has to do with me (I'm not all that interesting lol). I am literally just stuck...my mind is blank. Here's what our instructor told us to do, "Develop a project that interests you intensely and that you will be proud to place in your portfolio."

Asalaam alaikum,

How about deciding and narrowing down something you are seeking. The professor is interested in the process. You know the task is the final product. He is wishing for you to learn the art of learning. How do you narrow the scope of your topic. What makes your topic relevant. What gains can the reader make from your efforts. What are the obstacles you have to overcome. What are the obstacles that you made much harder for yourself. What kept you focused. What are your goals and objectives for the final product.

Start there...this is a process. You are learning about reaching a destination. Have fun.

Lets try to narrow it down..inshallah

Would like to write about a topic which is generally related to Islam Or
a topic which has relatively no links with Islam? Or
a topic that is a combination of both?

I'm leaning towards a topic that has relatively no links with Islam.

Aapa, thanks for that wonderful advice. Yes that's exactly what the professor wants. But my biggest problem is always the starting point! I'm having problems even coming up with a topic.

Khair Inshallah...

Lets narrow it down further ....

How about a topic that talks about student? A true representation of their emotions throughout college or semester life. Their difficulties, their struggles, their achievements, their goals and how they went to achieve them? What made them fail or succeed? etc

College life, from a students perspective

What do you think from the above ^ topic?

Dear Sister, I think I know. Often the mind settles to doing what one is told to do and not ask questions of why, why not, what for, ie knowing the bigger picture. That's what the drill called school education does. :)

Aapa pointed out why at all this assignment. Sometimes the why does not have an easy answer in real world, but in school/college drill it does have an answer. Once you know the bigger picture, its easier to come up with something that fits within the bigger scheme of things.

Dont worry, Insha Allah, you will come out of it. Start thinking about bigger picture, seek examine, reflect and proceed beyond thinking to actions. May Almighty help us in both the means and the goals ... Ameen.
