:salam2:

So last night I tried staying up all night praying. But I couldnt, I prayed a quite few prayers. But Later on I had to lay down for awhile because I was so tired. I was so tired that it was hard for me to think of Allah. so then after laying down I accidentally fell asleep. Then woke up knowing that my wudu has already been invalidated after falling asleep , so I just went back to my room and kept on sleeping.

Did any of you tried to stay awake all-night praying? Then how do you keep yourself awake?
I ate cereal before I prayed. :) But obviously it didnt work.

Praying whole night is not a good idea and it is not the sunnah of prophet Muhammad sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam.

There is a story of 3 people in the time of rasoolullah sallahu 'alaihi wasallam. One said he will fast the whole year, second one said he will not marry a woman (or will not have enjoyment with his wife - I dont remember which one from this) please correct me if I am wrong-) and the third one said he will pray the whole night.

Rasoolullah sallallahu 'alaihi wasallam heard about the three men and said to them that he (saw) is the best among them and he prays and sleeps, marries and prays at night, also eats and fasts on days.

I dont remember the actual wordings of the hadith. Hope any one of the brothers and sisters will post the actual hadith.

Brother praying Qiyam al-Laiil is one of the most important deeds that we can do to please ALLAH (swt). Also we have to sleep too. The best time to do Qiyam al-Laiil is in the third part of night. It will be much easier to do it on that time after a good sleep.

Keep up the good deeds brother and always remember that the best deed is that which is done repeatedly although it is small. It is very very good to keep doing Qiyam al-Laiil every night.

May ALLAH (swt) make it easy for you and accept from you. My duas will be always with you.

wassalam

Tahajjud is not different from Qiyam-al-layl, it's just a different name for the same prayer.

some people may find the difference.

Qiyam-al-layl means night prayer. U may pray at night after isha also.

But some refer tahajjud, which people pray after sleeping at night and wake up again at last part of night before fajr.

Salam,

My question is that I want to know the opinion of scholars and the teachings of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on how to perform Tahajjud (optional late night Prayers).
*******************************************************

Salam Sanusi,

Thank you very much for your question.

Actually your question is highly important for every Muslim. Tahajjud Prayer is part of the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which Muslims are preferred to follow all the time.

In his famous work, Fiqh As-Sunnah, Sheikh Sayyid Sabiq elaborates on the subject as follows:

Ordering His Messenger to perform Tahajjud, Allah Almighty says what means:
*{And during a part of the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is incumbent on you; maybe your Lord will raise you to a position of great glory.}* (Al-Israa’ 17:79)
This order, although it was specifically directed to the Prophet, also refers to all Muslims, since the Prophet is a perfect example and guide for us in all matters.

Moreover, performing Tahajjud Prayers regularly qualifies one as one of the righteous and makes one earn Allah's bounty and mercy. In praising those who perform the late night Prayers, Allah says what means:
*{And they who pass the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing.}* (Al-Furqan 25:64)
Next to these Qur’anic verses, there also exist a number of hadiths that reinforce the importance of Tahajjud.

`Abdullah ibn Salam reported:

“When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Madinah, the people gathered around him and I was one of them. I looked at his face and understood that it was not the face of a liar. The first words I heard him say were: ‘O people, spread the salutations, feed the people, keep the ties of kinship, and pray during the night while the others sleep, and you will enter Paradise in peace.’” (At-Tirmidhi.)

Salman Al-Farsi quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:

“Observe the night Prayer; it was the practice of the righteous before you and it brings you closer to your Lord and it is penance for evil deeds and erases the sins and repels disease from the body.” (At-Tabarani)

Etiquette of Prayer

The following acts are recommended for one who wishes to perform the Tahajjud Prayer:
Upon going to sleep, one should make the intention to perform the Prayers. Abu Ad-Darda' quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:

“Whoever goes to his bed with the intention of getting up and praying during the night, but, being overcome by sleep, fails to do that, he will have recorded for him what he has intended, and his sleep will be reckoned as a charity (an act of mercy) for him from his Lord.” (An-Nasa'i and Ibn Majah)
On waking up, it is recommended that one wipes the face, use a toothbrush, and look to the sky and make the supplication which has been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Abu Hudhaifa reported:
"Whenever the Prophet intended to go to bed, he would recite: (With Your name, O Allah, I die and I live)." And when he woke up from his sleep, he would say: (All the Praises are for Allah Who has made us alive after He made us die (sleep) and unto Him is the Resurrection.)" (Al-Bukhari)

One should begin with two quick rak`ahs and then one may pray whatever one wishes after that. `A’ishah said:

“When the Prophet prayed during the late-night, he would begin his Prayers with two quick rak`ahs.” (Muslim)
It is recommended that one wakes up one's family, for Abu Hurairah quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:

“May Allah bless the man who gets up during the night to pray and wakes up his wife and who, if she refuses to get up, sprinkles water on her face. And may Allah bless the woman who gets up during the night to pray and wakes up her husband and who, if he refuses, sprinkles water on his face.” (Ahmad)

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also said:

“If a man wakes his wife and prays during the night or they pray two rak`ahs together, they will be recorded among those (men and women) who (constantly) make remembrance of Allah.” (Abu Dawud.)
If one gets sleepy while performing Tahajjud, one should sleep. This is based on the hadith narrated by `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who quoted Allah’s Messenger as saying:

“When one of you gets up during the night for Prayer and his Qur’anic recital gets mixed up to the extent that he does not know what he says, he should lie down.” (Muslim.)

Recommended Time for Tahajjud

Tahajjud may be performed in the early part of the night, the middle part of the night, or the latter part of the night, but after the obligatory `Isha’ Prayer (night Prayer).

While describing the Prophet’s way of performing Prayer, Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“If we wanted to see him praying during the night, we could see him praying. If we wanted to see him sleeping during the night, we could see him sleeping. And sometimes he would fast for so many days that we thought he would not leave fasting throughout that month. And sometimes he would not fast (for so many days) that we thought he would not fast during that month.” (Al-Bukhari, Ahmad and An-Nasa’i.)

Commenting on this subject, Ibn Hajar says:

“There was no specific time in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform his late night Prayer; but he used to do whatever was easiest for him.”

Best Time for Tahajjud

It is best to delay this Prayer to the last third portion of the night. Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) quoted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying:

“Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring: ‘Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?’” (Al-Bukhari)

`Amr ibn `Absah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:

“The closest that a slave comes to his Lord is during the middle of the latter portion of the night. If you can be among those who remember Allah the Exalted One at that time, then do so.” (At-Tirmidhi)

The Number of Rak`ahs in Tahajjud

Tahajjud Prayer does not entail a specific number of rak`ahs that must be performed, nor is there any maximum limit that may be performed. It would be fulfilled even if one prayed just one rak`ah of Witr after `Isha’.

Samurah ibn Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allah ordered us to pray during the night, a little or a lot, and to make the last of the Prayer the Witr Prayer.” (At-Tabarani and Al-Bazzar)

I hope this answer is satisfactory. Thank you again for your question and please keep in touch.

But when is the last third of the night? 3 am , 4 am

pls respond thx

:salam2:

many say it starts at 2 am and lasts all the way to the athan of fajr prayer...

normally it is two regular ruka'ahs...and then one ruka'ah on its own...The Prophet (pbuh) has recommended 11 total...two by two by two by two by two and then one...

but by all means...if you are ill..cannot wake up that early for a good reason...or you overslept...you can just do one ruka'ah...

it is recommended by many scholars that you do wake up at about 2:00 or 2:30 am and pray the number of ruka'as you wish to pray...

and after you are done with your prayers...you divide your time so you can read Qura'an for a little bit...say your morning rememberance...and make istighfar (say astaghfiruallah or astaghfiruallah al a'atheem or astaghfiruallah wa atubu ilayh) on your hands or your prayer beads (making istighfar on your hand or specifically your fingers was recommended by the Prophet (pbuh) because on judgment day your limbs will be witnesses for you or against you when Allah (swt) judges you)...

now the reason why these things (i.e. read qura'an..make istighfar..etc.) are recommended is because:

1. Reading Qura'an at that time will first of all keep you *awake and aware* until it is time for fajr prayer..and if you're busy during the day due to school or work...this will make up for your missing a reading session of the Qura'an...because abandoning the Qura'an (not reading it regularly) is a grave matter as you might already know...so you'll have that taken care of.

2. Morning Rememberance is a number of prayers or dua'as from the Sunnah and Surahs from the Qura'an which you recite to protect yourself (with Allah's will and might) from the evils which may come your way..and you're supposed to say them before fajr prayer (and for the evening ones...you say them before maghrib prayer).

3. Making istighfar in general is something very highly encouraged due to the mighty benefits and blessings which it brings for the Muslim from Allah (swt)...and the indications from the Sunnah and the Qura'an are numerous...

The Prophet (pbuh) has said in a hadith *Tuba for the ones who in their records much istighfar is found*...and Tuba is supposed to be a Jannah especially for those who made istighfar often in the dunya...

and he (pbuh) has also said *Those who hang onto istighfar (make it often), Allah allows them an outlet of every distress, a relief of every affliction, and provides them abundant sustenance (gives them much *rizq*)*...

The Prophet (pbuh) has also said *By Allah..I make istighfar and repentance to Him (Allah) more than 70 times a day*...

and in the Qura'an it says:

"nor will Allah distress/afflict them whilst they ask for forgiveness". [8:33]

"Ask forgiveness from your Lord; for He is Oft-Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance; Give you increase in wealth and sons; and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers (of flowing water)". [71:10-12]

"Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance; that He may grant you enjoyment, good (and true)". [11:3]

but making istighfar (and dua'a as well) at this time (from 2:00 am until the athan of fajr) is especially good due to many indications especially from the Qura'an...

"Those who show patience, Firmness and self-control; who are true (in word and deed); who worship devoutly; who spend (in the way of Allah); and who pray for forgiveness in the early hours of the morning". [3:17]

"As to the Righteous, they will be in the midst of Gardens and Springsز Taking joy in the things which their Lord gives them, because, before then, they lived a good life. They were in the habit of sleeping but little by night, and in the hour of early dawn, they (were found) praying for Forgiveness". [51:15-18]

and there is a hadith which says *it was asked, 'oh Apostle of Allah, which dua'a is heard (by Allah most)?, he (pbuh) said '(the dua'a) in the deepest (part) of the night'*.

of course there is no minimum/maximum deal with this...some people make istighfar as little as 100 times a day...and some do it as much as 3000 times a day...and some make it constantly (in their hearts or very silently) because they enjoy it so much...I heard of a lady who makes istighfar so much that at one time she wanted to call her son over and instead of yelling his name..she yelled *astaghfiruallah* :SMILY149:...

and if you want to pick up on the habit...then again...doing it at that time earns you its special ajer and takes care of it for the rest of the day if you are busy...

I hope I did not bother you with all the information :shymuslima1:..but I wanted to share as much of the information I know as I possibly could...

and if you need anything else...I will be glad to help...

Take Care

Sunnah (Prophet's Example) in Performing Night Prayer
If a Muslim performs taraaweeh in a mosque, is it allowed for him to perform the night prayer at home?

What is the Prophet's (peace be upon him) manner in performing night prayer?

Praise be to Allaah.

If a Muslim performs Taraaweeh in congregation in the mosque, and wants to offer more prayers at home, he should pray a series of two-rak'ah prayers and should not repeat witr, because the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) said:
"There cannot be two witr prayers in one night." (Reported by Imaam Ahmad and others, and deemed saheeh in Saheeh al-Jaami', 7565).

Umm Salamah reported that the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) used to pray two rak'ahs after witr. (Reported by al-Tirmidhi and others, al-Sunan 433).

Al-Nawawi said: "The correct opinion is that he performed the two rak'ahs after witr sitting down, to demonstrate that this is permissible, and he did not do this all the time." (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi Sharh Jaami' al-Tirmidhi).

The sunnah is to make the last of one's night prayers an odd number of rak'ahs, as is reported (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, no. 943). But if he has already prayed with the imaam, and wants to perform more prayers on his own and has time to do so - especially in the winter - he should do as is outlined above.

As regards the number of rak'ahs to be performed in the night prayers, the Sunnah is to perform no more than eleven rak'ahs, because of the hadeeth narrated by 'Aa'ishah may Allaah be pleased with her, who said:
". . . He never used to pray more than eleven rak'ahs, in Ramadan or at any other time . . ." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, no. 1874).

The best way to perform the night prayer is to pray two by two (rak'ahs), and to separate the two even rak'ahs of witr from the one rak'ah (i.e., not to join the three rak'ahs of witr). The evidence for this is the hadeeth of Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both), who said: "The Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) used to perform the night prayers two by two (rak'ahs), then he would end with a single rak'ah." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, al-Fath, no. 940).

This is the best-known way of performing the night prayers according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him); other ways are also known.
