If you hear that someone is speaking ill of you, instead of trying to defend yourself you should say:

"He obviously does not know me very well, since there are so many other faults he could have mentioned."

Salam - it is a good reminder for us all. Also, try to be compassionate - many times, insults are a result of frustration due to other things, and you just happen to be the thing/person right there when they cannot take anymore stress and "blow".

"If defamation comes to you from a faulty man, then know that you are a faultless one".

If anyone picks it (and the one you wrote) up and engrave it into the folds of their mind..it will surely make them grin when they see it being committed by others towards them..it will *then* make A LOT of sense :)
