It is not permissible to read the specious arguments that the Christians propagate on the internet or via other media, or to engage with them in religious disputes and debates, except for those who are qualified to do so, who have proof and evidence and who know how to present arguments. A number of scholars have stated that it is haraam to look at any of the books of the People of the Book, except for those who have deep knowledge, because we are commanded neither to believe nor disbelieve what they tell us about stories that are not present in our religion. There is no guarantee that the ordinary person who has no knowledge will not end up believing in falsehood and rejecting the truth. Moreover, man is weak and specious arguments may take root in the heart and it may be difficult to get rid of them. The following fatwa was issued by the Standing Committee:

“A great deal of distortion, addition and subtraction has befallen the previous divinely-revealed scriptures, as Allaah has stated, so it is not permissible for a Muslim to read them and study them, unless he is one who has deep knowledge and is seeking to explain the distortions and contradictions therein.” (3/311).

So we r not suppose to read other scripture than how can we do dawaa and explain to others that no this is wrong or this is not correct
I had never heard the above statement before please clarify
thank you

Allah subhanah was ta'ala told us in the Holy Quran to tell the people of the book:

"And they say: "None shall enter Paradise unless he be a Jew or a Christian." Those are their (vain) desires. Say: "Produce your proof if ye are truthful."
(Holy Quran 002.111)

"Or have they taken for worship (other) gods besides him? Say, "Bring your convincing proof: this is the Message of those with me and the Message of those before me." But most of them know not the Truth, and so turn away. "
(Holy Quran 21:24)

So as you see, Allah is telling us to ask the people of the book to provide their proof and evidence... and they have surely provided it; it's their bible. How can we examine their evidence without reading it and studying their claims?? If we don't open their book, our request to provide a proof will mean nothing. If we were to go by what Allah has commanded us, we'll find ourselves with no choice but to examine their bible.

Now I do agree that a person should be knowledgeable and trained to do so. That's why I resort to studying Shaikh Ahmad Deedat's literature to point me to the right places in the bible to examine. This is because the bible is full of other ideas that support their claim (people of the book). And a person who wants to engage in debates with them should be aware of how the bible has come to be at its present form. A good book is by Bart Ehrman "Misquoting Jesus." ----> http://www.amazon.com/Misquoting-Jesus-Story-Behind-Changed/dp/0060738170

A person should arm themselves with knowledge before engaging in this venture.. I do agree with this fact.

We are not supposed to read these books or any other religious book of any religion with the intention of gaining knowledge from it. But we are definetly allowed to read it to see what is written in it so that we could counter their claims. Actually if you read a book of any religion so that you could help and guide its followers towards Allah and Islam you will get Ajar from Allah (SWT).

What is not allowed is to open these book with the intention that since this is a religious book and since every religion has some good in it you will gain some good and religious knowledge by reading it.

I hope you see the difference now.

Do try to read any of it. All the answers you would ever need are given by people that know.

There is a hadith of Umar rithiAllahanhu was reading the scriptures and the prophet PBUH said don't. I will get the hadith when I get time.
