Islam takes root in land of bikinis and Carnival

RIO DE JANEIRO: “As-salam aleikum!” Omar greeted worshippers as he entered Mesquita da Luz, Rio’s first mosque where he had just broken his Ramazan fast at dusk.

Those are some of the only words Omar knows in Arabic, and he quickly continued his conversation in Portuguese with fellow Muslims who mostly, like him, converted recently to Islam in the world’s biggest Catholic country.

In a land known more for its bikinis and extravagant Carnival featuring scantily clad women, a small but growing number of Brazilians of various backgrounds call themselves Muslim.

For decades, it was primarily families of Libyan, Palestinian and Syrian descent who practiced Islam in Brazil.

Omar, who until just four years ago officiated as Catholic priest at a local church, explained why he embraced Islam.

“I found in Islam everything I had always looked for.

“At the seminary, you learn that Islam is one of the monotheistic religions. There is no prejudice against this religion,”
said Omar as he stood by his wife Alessandra Faria, who goes by the name “Fatima” after converting and deciding to wear the veil.

“In the beginning, my mother was mortified at the thought of going outside with me. I wear the veil to show I am Muslim and aware that I am part of a minority,” she said.

Fatima’s hijab may raise eyebrows in Rio, where it is more common to see women walking the streets in bikinis in seaside neighborhoods, but she says her beliefs can find a place here.

In Rio, there are about 500 Muslim families, 85 per cent of them Brazilian converts who have no Arab links,” Isbelle said.

Assalaam walaikum,

Islam is not new to Brazil. Lets do a read history. There are indications that Muslims had contact with the land known as Brazil in the 12th century.

20% of slaves were Muslims. They could not practice the faith openly as slaves..but they were there.

During Prophets time, Caliphs time itself, Sahabah's, Saints had spread to different parts of world to spread Deen. I strongly believe, from the kind of reliable stories we here about saints, Sahabah's, Moomins did spread wide over earth, and there were muslim communities all over world, though in small numbers!!

Now there is documented proof of
- Indian king accepting Islam seeing Miracle of moon split (There could be more cultures, who witnessed this, all over world.]
- very old Islamic graves kabars dating to 800-1000 AD in south africa
-- China, Tang period (618-906) in the seventh, eighth and ninth centuries
-- I remember reading about chinese muslims expedition to Americas + Christian missionaries documents of Islamic settlement in Americas

[Are there some readings on it , please share]

jazakAllahukhairan for your comment brother.

I need to address something in your post that I find is a problem. The word saint should not be referred to any muslims, it is a Christian concept. From the sahaba, raa, we only know of 10 that are promissed paradise: Abu Bakr, Umar, Othman, Ali, Az-zayd bin awaam, thalha, Abur-Rahman bin awf, Saad bin abi waqaas, abu ubayd bin jarage, and said bin zaid. RA

Some soofie traditions tend to use this terminology to their revered sheiks. However these are not from the Quran and Sunnah.

Yes there are many great people through out history who contributed and were outstanding Muslims, but we don't know if they will or will not go to heaven.

During the time of the prophet, PBUH, a few sahaba, ra, who would comment that this person or that person will enter hell, and Allah sent some harsh words regarding this matter. This is an area we leave up to Allah swt, he is the Judge.

Now for history that will amaze you about muslims, this is discussed in a series called "Untold Stories of World History" by Abdullah Hakim Quick. The series is on Youtube and it has many episodes.

Here is the playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL645781FD3128C75C

In the series he discusses Brazil but I don't remember which one.

baraka Allah feekum.
