Israeli official cancels trip to UK for fear of being arrested for war crimes

Avi Dichter, the Israeli Public Security Minister, has cancelled a trip to Great Britain after the Israeli Foreign Ministry recommended that he do so. Dichter was head of the Shin Bet, the Israeli secret service, during some of the bloodiest years of the intifada, leading to the potential that he would be arrested for war crimes.


Israeli authorities have not found any evidence of war crimes by Dichter, but most murders of Palestinian civilians by Israeli forces are not investigated by the Israeli authorities. Some of the crimes attributed to Dichter include involvement in the Jenin massacre of 2002, in which over 300 Palestinians were killed, many of them buried alive; and a missile strike on a crowded apartment building in Gaza, also in 2002, in which fifteen civilians, mainly women and children, were torn to shreds.


According to British law, any British citizen may file a charge against a foreign official suspected of war crimes, and the police may investigate and possibly issue a warrant if there is evidence to support the charge.


Other Israeli officials who served as military leaders during the second intifada have faced such charges in England. One, former Southern Command chief Doron Almog, found a British police officer waiting for him with an arrest warrant at the London airport, when he arrived there for a visit in 2005. He re-boarded the plane back to Israel to avoid being arrested.


Since that time, the Israeli government has kept a top British law firm on retainer just in case any Israeli official is arrested in Britain. Avi Dichter and others have been cautioned against traveling to the U.K. by the Israeli government due to that country's propensity to prosecute war criminals.

Israeli minister skips UK trip

Avi Dichter, the Israeli internal security minister, has cancelled a trip to Britain over fears that he could be arrested for war crimes at the behest of pro-Palestinian groups.

Dichter, a former director of the Shin Bet domestic spy service, was to have taken part in a London conference on Middle East .

"The minister was told that there was a good chance he could be at risk of arrest," Mati Gill, Dichter's chief of staff, said on Thursday.

The minister called off his visit on the advice of Israel's foreign and justice ministries.

"This incident has not marred our bilateral ties, but it is a shame that an opportunity for Dichter to share from his experience has gone to waste," Gill said.

Assassination planner

Dichter was one of the planners of the assassination of Saleh Shehada, a Hamas commander, in 2002.

Shehada, and 14 Palestianian civilians, were killed by an Israeli air strike.

Doron Almog, an Israeli ex-general involved in the Shehada assassination, narrowly avoided arrested when in London in 2005.

He avoided arrest by returning to Israel after being warned that a British magistrate had ordered his detention.

A federal judge in the US threw out private war crimes proceedings against Dichter in 2005.

Israel has come under international censure for its handling of a Palestinian revolt that erupted in 2000. Israel says its methods are an appropriate response to armed fighters who operate in crowded Palestinian areas and use tactics like suicide bombings.

After Almog's near-arrest, Tzipi Livni, the Israeli foreign minister, asked British judicial authorities to review laws allowing magistrates to issue such arrest warrants.

Livni repeated the request during a visit by David Miliband, the British foreign secretary, last month, Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported.

As for Britain, it does not care about War Crimes or War Criminals. it is all a front. The UK itself commits War Crimes as we speak. The biggest criminals of all are here making "peace".

I dont even like to call it Israel. It has nothing to do with Judaism. It has nothing to do with our Prophets, David, Soloman, Moses, Abraham, Ismael, Isaac, Jacob.. all our Prophets. All worshipped Allah alone and the true followers of these Prophets followed them properly.

Today, what you have in 'Israel' are racist arrogant people, many of whom are atheist and are Jewish by "identity", their Rabbis say they welcome in Israel because just being Jewish means they go to heaven, whether they do haram or not. - Israel is the World's leading place for human sex trafficking. Many girls are taken from Russia and forced into prostitution there. Israel constantly abuses human rights of the Palestinians from shooting kids through to bulldozing houses. They blame the Palestinians for terrorism, in reality they are the real terrorists.

They claim to be followers of the blessed Prophet's David and Soloman. They want to "rebuild the temple". I say their claims are invalid.

Their is no need to rebuild the temple of Soloman. Soloman was a Muslim, someone devoted to the worship of Allah alone. - Today, the Jews are devoted not to Allah, not to the Torah but to their Rabbis who have for centuries changed the Laws of the Torah to suit their needs and desires.

To such an extent today they break many of the Sabbath rules that they had and they abuse the rights of innocent people. They are a people full of hatred and without conscience.

It is like something you can not even imagine, not even from TV or by reading articles. When you are there, the first feeling you get, you are not so Scared... you are just stunned. You can not believe that these people in Green uniforms (the Jewish soldiers) can do what they do. How?? They have absolutely no heart.

They walk around like Kings, pointing guns at everyone who is not Jewish or who disagrees with them. They keep pushing and pushing people so that they "break" and give them an excuse to shoot. For example, imagine you have to take your elderly grandmother to a hospital, you have to go through checkpoints and they might even scream and shout at you and your grandmother as if you are some criminal.

We are in the midst of a revival and I believe the youth are keeping Islam alive. I thank you for this site. It educates Muslims from many perspectives. I thank Sister Harb for her relentless work in keeping us aware. Now it is time for us to change and act as Muslims. Yes, I agree we need to become knowledgeable about the Sunnath and the Glorious Quran. Once we have knowledge we can move forward for the sake of Islam and become once again the grateful slaves of Allah subhana talla.
