LONDON -- Israel's Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor canceled a visit to the UK due to concerns he would be arrested for war crimes, a British-Israeli group said.

The chief executive of Britain and Israel Communications and Research Center, Lorna Fitzsimons said "Israeli law officers did not think they should take the risk of allowing him to come," The Associated Press said.

Meridor had been scheduled to speak at the center Monday.

The Israeli daily Haaretz said Israel's foreign and justice ministries warned the minister that he could face charges related to Israel's raid on a Turkish ship
delivering aid to Gaza on 31 May.
Israeli forces killed nine passengers during the raid,
which is under investigation by the UN.

The initial findings of the UN committee alleged
"a series of violations of international law,
including international humanitarian and human rights law,
were committed by the Israeli forces
during the interception of the flotilla
and during the detention of passengers in Israel prior to deportation."

In December, Israel's former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni canceled a visit to the UK after a British court issued a warrant for her arrest for her role in Israel’s winter war on Gaza. Livni served as foreign minister during the three-week attack which left more than 1,400 Palestinians dead.

Salaam,

Whereas this is a good publicity stunt..I find it to be hypocritical. The UK was so complicit in arranging the groundwork for Israel.
The UK will never arrest an Israeli.

There is a saying in the US regarding the KKK...it is better for the KKK to come out in the sheets than it is to invite me to dinner where the sheet is used as a tablecloth.

The UK is using the sheet as a tablecloth. They still are in bed with the Israeli's. The Middle East is flooded with troops.

Assalam alaikum.

Could you please specify the dates of these articles? Some of them seem like old news from over a year ago. This sub-forum is known as Current Events. I'm not even sure if the UK still has this policy or view against Israel anymore.

So what is the date of this news article? I was looking for something a bit more specific than "latest news".

I remember reading about such a thing just after the Israeli attack on Gaza in January 2009. But it is November 2010 now, and the situation might have changed again. The British government has generally had very positive relationships with Israel.

Assalam alaikum.

Shaykh Google says it was Published Tuesday 02/11/2010 and (updated) 04/11/2010 11:21

All other news carriers with the same story are also similar timings from Nov 1-4th of this year. But yes you might have heard similar last year as well as the Article from The Associated Press says:

Several Israeli officials have been threatened with legal action in Britain under the contested legal principle of "universal jurisdiction," which says that some crimes are so serious they can be prosecuted locally, even if they are alleged to have been committed elsewhere.

Pro-Palestinian organizations have used the principle to pursue Israeli officers who have taken part in operations against Palestinian militants in which civilians have been killed.

The campaign has resulted in no arrests but has caused tension between Britain and Israel.

Last year, Palestinian activists tried unsuccessfully to have Defence Minister Ehud Barak arrested during a visit to Britain. Former foreign minister Tzipi Livni later cancelled a visit to London after being warned she might be met with an arrest warrant.

When Britain's new Conservative-led government took office in May, Foreign Secretary William Hague promised to "act speedily" to clarify the law.

"We cannot have a position where Israeli politicians feel they cannot visit this country," he said then.

In a statement Tuesday, the Foreign Office said the government was "committed to correct an anomaly that allows people to be detained even where there is no realistic chance of prosecution and ensure that the U.K.'s systems cannot be misused or lead to unintended but serious consequences for international relations."

Outside of that, I really have no comment.
