Jihad - Relevant for Today ... ???

I know that jihad has different meanings -- effort, exerting the best efforts, which involves some kind of struggle, or resistance, in order to achieve one's goal.

Some people are saying that jihad is only relevant for the wars that happened a very long time ago, like during the days of the prophet Muhammad.

What is your understanding regarding the revelance of jihad for the present time?

The reason that I asked the question, is that some people have told me that jihad, in relation to fighting and killing the infidels, jihad is only valid for the days of the prophet Muhammad. They say that you cannot apply jihad to support fighting and killing the infidels in our present days.

Firstly, jihaad with weapons, waging war, wasn't only for the time of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam). It never ceases. Meaning, when there is the possibility to do jihaad against the disbelievers, it is done. When the conditions of jihaad are present, it is done. It doesn't mean that there must be armed jihaad 24/7 each day of the year, but it doesn't stop meaning when the muslims are able to do it, they do it. For example when an enemy attacks, they must defend themselves etc.

Secondly, jihaad has many conditions, pillars, because it is an act of worship. It is a big and important act of worship, so not everyone has the right to talk about it, to discuss it, to give his opinion about it.

Hard Rock Moslem

Firstly welcome to the forum.

The word "Jihaad" today was misunderstood by both Muslim and Non-Muslim, it is certainly has nothing to do with "holy war" which is not found anywhere in our Qur'an. In fact, if you look at below verse from the Qur'an,

And if anyone of the Mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) seeks your protection then grant him protection, so that he may hear the Word of Allah (the Quran), and then escort him to where he can be secure, that is because they are men who know not. (Holy Qur'an, Chapter 9 Verse no. 6)

Qur'an says if Non-Believers ask for protection, not only we have to provide them the protection but also take them to a place where they will have security.

To your question, is jihaad relevant? Yes it is relevant, not jihad the "holy war" which is non-existent in Islam but actual jihaad in it's broad context e.g. jihaad against al-nafs, jihaad against corrupt practices, jihaad against immorality etc.
