What i know about jihad?
Jihad as language mean: Giving all your effort and ability to solve difficult and heavy problem.(see Fathul Bari 6/3 and others).
Jihad fi sabilillah in In islam syar'i not just to fight disbeliever(Kafir) only,even according syar'i including some points:
Jihadun Nafs (Jihad to fight your bad passion(to improve yourself))
Jihadusy Syaithan (Jihad againts satan)
Jihadul Kuffar (Jihad againt koum kuffar)
Jihadul Munafiqin (Jihad againts koum munafiq)
every points have each degree. Our prophet Rasullullah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam was a man in highest degree of jihad fi sabilillah.he done jihad in Allah path with the true jihad and done all form of jihad, give every last of his live for jihad using his heart,his mouth and his hand. that is why he is have the highest degree in Allah side(see Zadul Ma'ad 3/5,9)

In summary jihad means to struggle/strive for good/better. There are 2 types the lesser and greater. The greater jihad is within, this means the struggle to stop sinning and to overcome our base desires and to do what is right and good. The lesser jihad is physical fighting in order to protect our families, homes, nation(s) against foriegn invaders.
