Hello everyone,

I just finished the Koran as it was my goal to do by then end of Ramadan although I started back in mid July. I've realized that this is a book I don't think I could read a million times and ever fully come to understand... but I know that is expected. There were certain things not mentioned in the Koran that for some reason I thought would be... or maybe I missed it or forgot because I read it over such a long period of time? For example, I thought the signs of the last days would be in the Koran? If they aren't in the Koran what text is it in?

thanks!!!

Hello Sister. Firstly I would like to congratulate u on the completion of reciting (khatam) the Qur'an. Alhamdulillah. Not many in this world are not able to do so. So Alhamdulillah.

IN Islam, we must adhere to the teachings of both the Qur'an and the Sunnah, the Ahadith. So certain things which are not mentioned in the Qur'an is mentioned by the Prophet in the Ahadith.

Anybody, correct me if i am wrong, but in the Qur'an, Allah (SWT) gave us a picture of what is it like when the time comes such as in Surah Al-Waqiah,

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

When the Event inevitable cometh to pass.
Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming. (Many) will it bring low, (many) will it exalt; When the earth shall be shaken to its depths, And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms, Becoming dust scattered abroad,
(56:1-5).

And following that, Allah(SWT) mentioned what will happen on the Day of Judgement and also what the dwellers of paradise and hell will meet in their dwelling.

As for the signs of the Last Hour, the events proceeding to the Last Hour itself, is mostly narrated in the Ahadith such as the appearance of the Mahdi and the Al-Maseh Ad-Dajjal and what are they going to do when they appear.

An example of a hadith relating to the Dajjal is,

Ibn 'Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) also reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) described the Dajjaal as living among people, and said: "Allaah, may He be exalted, is not one-eyed, but al-Maseeh al-Dajjaal is one-eyed, and his right eye looks like a floating grape." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 13/90, and Muslim, 18/59)

So that is why, the Qur'an and the Hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) must go hand in hand.

I hope I managed to clarify your doubts.
Continue to strive for ilm ya.

Dear Ashima,

Perhaps it would help you to read books about the Qur'aan to gain a better understanding on why you didn't find those things you expected to in the Qur'aan. An excellent book on the subject matter, on the sciences of the Qur'aan is Usool at-Tafseer by Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips. Unlike the Bible and other scriptures, subject matters aren't specific to chapters in the Qur'aan. So you won't really find a specific chapter for example, on just the signs of the Day of Judgment, and another on laws governing marriage and dicorce etc. To take this example further, one of the signs of the Day of judgement namely the emergence of the tribes of Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj (Gog and Magog), their story is mentioned towards the end of the 18th Chapter, Al-Kahf (The Cave). However, Al-Kahf begins with a mention of Allaah's oneness (tawheed), the story of the People of the Cave, the account of when Moosaa (Moses) met with Khidr and as I stated, the story of Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj.

If you are specifically looking for information on the signs of the hour, then you may wish to consult a classical work on the subject, called An-Nihaayah, translated under the title "The Book of the End" by the great scholar and historian of Islaam, Abul-Fidaa' Isma`eel Ibn Katheer. I hope this information is useful,

THE HOUR

The Quran only gives the outline for many issues including the 'last hour'.

For greater detail, you have to refer to the Hadith.

Here are some hadith about the last hour...

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
until the son of Mary (i.e. Jesus) descends amongst you
as a just ruler, he will break the cross, kill the pigs, and
abolish the Jizya tax. Money will be in abundance so
that nobody will accept it (as charitable gifts).

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
until you fight with the Jews, and the stone behind
which a Jew will be hiding will say. "O Muslim! There is a
Jew hiding behind me, so kill him."

Narrated Amr bin Taghlib

The Prophet said, "One of the portents of the Hour is
that you will fight with people wearing shoes made of
hair; and one of the portents of the Hour is that you
will fight with broad-faced people whose faces will look
like shields coated with leather."

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
until you fight with the Turks; people with small eyes,
red faces, and flat noses. Their faces will look like
shields coated with leather. The Hour will not be
established till you fight with people whose shoes are
made of hair."

Narrated Auf bin Mali

I went to the Prophet during the Ghazwa of Tabuk while
he was sitting in a leather tent. He said, "Count six
signs that indicate the approach of the Hour: my
death, the conquest of Jerusalem, a plague that will
afflict you (and kill you in great numbers) as the plague
that afflicts sheep, the increase of wealth to such an
extent that even if one is given one hundred Dinars, he
will not be satisfied; then an affliction which no Arab
house will escape, and then a truce between you and
Bani Al-Asfar (i.e. the Byzantines) who will betray you
and attack you under eighty flags. Under each flag will
be twelve thousand soldiers.

Narrated Anas

When 'Abdullah bin Salam heard the arrival of the
Prophet at Medina, he came to him and said, "I am
going to ask you about three things which nobody
knows except a prophet: What is the first portent of the
Hour? What will be the first meal taken by the people
of Paradise? Why does a child resemble its father, and
why does it resemble its maternal uncle" Allah's Apostle
said, "Gabriel has just now told me of their answers."
'Abdullah said, "He (i.e. Gabriel), from amongst all the
angels, is the enemy of the Jews." Allah's Apostle said,
"The first portent of the Hour will be a fire that will
bring together the people from the east to the west;
the first meal of the people of Paradise will be
Extra-lobe (caudate lobe) of fish-liver. As for the
resemblance of the child to its parents: If a man has
sexual intercourse with his wife and gets discharge first,
the child will resemble the father, and if the woman gets
discharge first, the child will resemble her." On that
'Abdullah bin Salam said, "I testify that you are the
Apostle of Allah." 'Abdullah bin Salam further said, "O
Allah's Apostle! The Jews are liars, and if they should
come to know about my conversion to Islam before you
ask them (about me), they would tell a lie about me."
The Jews came to Allah's Apostle and 'Abdullah went
inside the house. Allah's Apostle asked (the Jews),
"What kind of man is 'Abdullah bin Salam amongst you?"
They replied, "He is the most learned person amongst
us, and the best amongst us, and the son of the best
amongst us." Allah's Apostle said, "What do you think if
he embraces Islam (will you do as he does)?" The Jews
said, "May Allah save him from it." Then 'Abdullah bin
Salam came out in front of them saying, "I testify that
none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that
Muhammad is the Apostle of Allah." Thereupon they
said, "He is the evilest among us, and the son of the
evilest amongst us," and continued talking badly of him.

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till
you fight a nation wearing hairy shoes, and till you fight
the Turks, who will have small eyes, red faces and flat
noses; and their faces will be like flat shields. And you
will find that the best people are those who hate
responsibility of ruling most of all till they are chosen to
be the rulers. And the people are of different natures:
The best in the pre-Islamic period are the best in Islam.
A time will come when any of you will love to see me
rather than to have his family and property doubled."

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till
there is a war between two groups among whom there
will be a great number of casualties, though the claims
(or religion) of both of them will be one and the same.
And the Hour will not be established till there appear
about thirty liars, all of whom will be claiming to be the
messengers of Allah. "

Narrated Anas

A man asked the Prophet about the Hour (i.e. Day of
Judgment) saying, "When will the Hour be?" The
Prophet said, "What have you prepared for it?" The man
said, "Nothing, except that I love Allah and His Apostle."
The Prophet said, "You will be with those whom you
love." We had never been so glad as we were on
hearing that saying of the Prophet (i.e., "You will be
with those whom you love.") Therefore, I love the
Prophet, Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and I hope that I will be
with them beCause of my love for them though my
deeds are not similar to theirs.

Narrated Abdullah

Allah's Apostle said, "The keys of the Unseen are five:
Verily with Allah (Alone) is the knowledge of the Hour,
He sends down the rain and knows what is in the
wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and
no soul knows in what land it will die. Verily, Allah is
All-Knower, All-Aware." (31.34)

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
until the sun rises from the West: and when the people
see it, then whoever will be living on the surface of the
earth will have faith, and that is (the time) when no
good will it do to a soul to believe then, if it believed not
before." (6.158)

Narrated Sahl bin Sad

I saw Allah's Apostle pointing with his index and middle
fingers, saying, "The time of my Advent and the Hour
are like these two fingers." The Great Catastrophe will
overwhelm everything.

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
till the sun rises from the west, and when it rises (from
the west) and the people see it, then all of them will
believe (in Allah). But that will be the time when 'No
good it will do to a soul to believe then. If it believed
not before...' (6.158)

The Hour will be established (so suddenly) that two
persons spreading a garment between them will not be
able to finish their bargain, nor will they be able to fold
it up. The Hour will be established while a man is
carrying the milk of his she-camel, but cannot drink it;
and the Hour will be established when someone is not
able to prepare the tank to water his livestock from it;
and the Hour will be established when some of you
has raised his food to his mouth but cannot eat it."

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till
a man passes by a grave of somebody and says, 'Would
that I were in his place.' "

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
till the buttocks of the women of the tribe of Daus move
while going round Dhi-al-Khalasa." Dhi-al-Khalasa was
the idol of the Daus tribe which they used to worship in
the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance.

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
till a man from Qahtan appears, driving the people with
his stick."

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
till a fire will come out of the land of Hijaz, and it will
throw light on the necks of the camels at Busra."

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
(1) till two big groups fight each other whereupon there
will be a great number of casualties on both sides and
they will be following one and the same religious
doctrine, (2) till about thirty Dajjals (liars) appear, and
each one of them will claim that he is Allah's Apostle, (3)
till the religious knowledge is taken away (by the death
of religious scholars) (4) earthquakes will increase in
number (5) time will pass quickly, (6) afflictions will
appear, (7) Al-Harj, (i.e., killing) will increase, (8) till
wealth will be in abundance--so abundant that a
wealthy person will worry lest nobody should accept his
Zakat, and whenever he will present it to someone,
that person (to whom it will be offered) will say, 'I am
not in need of it,' (9) till the people compete with one
another in constructing high buildings, (10) till a man
when passing by a grave of someone will say, 'Would
that I were in his place,' (11) and till the sun rises from
the West. So when the sun will rise and the people will
see it (rising from the West) they will all believe
(embrace Islam) but that will be the time when: (As
Allah said,) 'No good will it do to a soul to believe then,
if it believed not before, nor earned good (by deeds of
righteousness) through its Faith.' (6.158) And the Hour
will be established while two men spreading a garment
in front of them but they will not be able to sell it, nor
fold it up; and the Hour will be established when a
man has milked his she-camel and has taken away the
milk but he will not be able to drink it; and the Hour
will be established before a man repairing a tank (for
his livestock) is able to water (his animals) in it; and the
Hour will be established when a person has raised a
morsel (of food) to his mouth but will not be able to eat
it."

Narrated Al Mughira bin Shuba

The Prophet said, "A group of my followers will remain
predominant (victorious) till Allah's Order (the Hour)
comes upon them while they are still predominant
(victorious)."

Narrated Abu Huraira

The Prophet said, "The Hour will not be established till
my followers copy the deeds of the previous nations
and follow them very closely, span by span, and cubit by
cubit (i.e., inch by inch)." It was said, "O Allah's Apostle!
Do you mean by those (nations) the Persians and the
Byzantines?" The Prophet said, "Who can it be other
than they?"

Narrated Muawiya

I heard the Prophet saying, "A group of my followers will
keep on following Allah's Laws strictly and they will not
be harmed by those who will disbelieve them or stand
against them till Allah's Order (The Hour) will come
while they will be in that state."

Narrated Abu Huraira

Allah's Apostle said, "The Hour will not be established
till two (huge) groups fight against each other, their
claim being one and the same."

Narrated Hudhayfah ibn Usayd Ghifari

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) came to us all of a
sudden as we were (busy in a discussion) He said:
What do you discuss about? (the Companions) said: We
are discussing about the Last Hour. Thereupon he
said: It will not come until you see ten signs before and
(in this connection) he made a mention of the smoke,
Dajjal, the beast, the rising of the sun from the west,
the descent of Jesus son of Mary (Allah be pleased with
him), The Gog and Magog, and landslides in three
places, one in the east, one in the west and one in
Arabia at the end of which fire would burn forth from the
Yemen, and would drive people to the place of their
assembly.

Narrated AbuHurayrah

Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him) said: You have
heard of the city, one side of which is inclined and the
other is on the coast (Constantinople). They said: Yes,
Allah's Apostle (peace be upon him). Thereupon he said:
The Last Hour will not come until seventy thousand
people from Banu Isra'il attack it. When they land there,
they will neither fight with weapons nor shower arrows
but will only say: "There is no god but Allah and Allah is
the Greatest," and one side of it will fall. Thawr (one of
the narrators) said: I think that he said: The area on
the coast. Then they will say for the second time:
"There is no god but Allah and Allah is the Greatest,"
and the other side will also fall. They will say: "There is
no god but Allah is the Greatest," and the gates will be
opened for them and they will enter. They will be
collecting spoils of war and distributing them among
themselves when a noise will be heard and it will be
said: Verily, the Dajjal has come. Thus they will leave
everything there and turn to (confront) him.

Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir

It has been narrated on the authority of AbdurRahman
ibn Shamasah al-Mahri who said: I was in the company
of Maslamah ibn Mukhallad, and Abdullah ibn Amr ibn 'As
was with him. Abdullah said: The Hour shall come only
when the worst type of people are left on the earth.
They will be worse than the people of pre-Islamic days.
They will receive whatever they ask of Allah. While we
were still sitting, Uqbah ibn Amr came and Maslamah
said to him: Uqbah, listen to what Abdullah says. Uqbah
said: He knows better so far as I am concerned. I heard
the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: A
group of people from my Ummah will continue to fight in
obedience to the Command of Allah, remaining
dominant over their enemies. Those who oppose them
shall not do them any harm. They will remain in this
condition until the Hour overtakes them. (At this)
Abdullah said: Yes. Then Allah will raise a wind which
will be fragrant like musk and whose touch will be like
the touch of silk; (but) it will cause the death of all
(faithful) persons, not leaving behind a single person
with an iota of faith in his heart. Then only the worst of
men will remain to be overwhelmed by the Hour.

Dear Ashima,

Perhaps it would help you to read books about the Qur'aan to gain a better understanding on why you didn't find those things you expected to in the Qur'aan.

I am currently reading The Vision of Islam by Sachiko Murata and William C. Chittick. I really really like it. Will probably take me atleast another month as it's one that I can only handle a few pages at a time, but I will continue to chip away. Has anyone read/heard of this book?
And thank you for all of the congrats from everyone. It means a lot. This was a goal of mine and I really feel that taking part in fasting during Ramadan really kept me on track with educating myself. I'm honestly kind of sad not to fast anymore because I fear getting off track with studying.
