I got a place for my postgrad education in UCL, London. I need some advice as to looking for an accomodation for my wife, my one year old daughter and myself in London.

Can anyone give some general advice on this. Say if I were to rent in Nansen Village and travel daily to UCL, how much will I be able to save compared to renting a similar flat in zone 1 or zone 2.

Is the cost of food, laundry, etc similar between zone 1 and zone 2-6 ?

Nansen Village (Woodsie Park, N12) is quite some distance from UCL (about 8 miles). Compare it with Mile End or Whitechapel area (E1), about 4 miles from your Uni. Woodside park is in zone 4 whereas Mile End/Whitechapel is zone 2, you can save traveling cost as well.

East London Mosque is about 2-3 min walk from Whitechapel underground, takes 20 mins by tube to UCL.

Simply put, most Zone 1 and 2 areas cost a lot more than the outer zones.

To be honest, I personally think you're better off renting in a zone 3 constituency that has a tube station which stops near the university. Nearby stations include Euston Square, Warren Street and Euston, the latter two being on the Victoria line. Maybe you could look for accommodation in Tottenham. It'll be a bit further out, will take around 15 minutes to get to Uni, but is a lot cheaper than anywhere near UCL.

Nansen Village, I'm not sure if it's actually cheaper? It's probably cheaper than renting in Central London, but it takes around 1 hour to get from there to UCL. Hope it helps.

1. It costs a lot more in zone 1,2 but when taking transport cost into consideration how much will one be able to save by staying farther away from central London ? Is the difference significant ?

2. I will probably need two rooms with a bathroom/toilet and a kitchen. Being Muslims it is easier if we don't have to share the toilet and kitchen with other couples. How do I look for such a house/flat. In those advertisements I have some difficulties differentiating those which require you to share with other people from those which doesn't require sharing. I have very little idea as to how will the houses in London look like from inside.

3. What are the pros and cons of staying in student houses, intercollegiate halls etc rather than staying in private flats/houses. Are student houses cheaper ?

I wouldn't call anyone in London an `Aalim. There are students of knowledge here, but `Ullemaa' are nil. The students of knowledge are scattered around London, there's a young Somali brother somewhere in West London I believe who has memorised Al-Qur'aan and As-Saheehayn (maa shaa' Allaah). The most densely Muslim populated areas of London are typically those in East. More specifically: Walthamstow, Leyton, Leytonstone, anywhere in London Borough of Newham and anywhere in London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Where there are more Muslims, you find more tullaab ul-`ilm... Allaah knows best.

Akhi, Mile End/Whitechapel is very near central, but have you seen flat prices. There are some good flats going, but overall it costs more than any other part of East London. The best thing about Mile End/Whitechapel is the strong presence of Muslims...

For renting, look at some large estate agents based in London such as yourmove, rightmove etc.

1. Statistically the crime rates in E1 is quite high. Should I be worried ? Is it that bad ? If I am staying alone I am really not concerned but as I will be leaving my wife and daughter most of the time in the house I do need some peace of mind.

2. Are there students of knowledge who accept students ? I plan to read some Mutoon with them if possible.

If your planning to study in UCL then i guess some where like Camden, Islington (Holloway/ Archway) would be your best bet for living.

Also there is a new Mosque in the area (near camden) with excellent brothers running the mosque and there are plenty of people you who can study with in the mosque who have Ijazaaz's, if i am not mistaken one even has a PHD from Madina University. I disagree with bro Kashmir because many of the 'Alims are not well known via youtube or facebook but there are plenty of 'Alims these days but they rearley have the time to spend teaching individuals.
