JERUSALEM, Israel

Perhaps the most alarming exodus is occurring in the Holy Land -- the birthplace of Christianity

Force to leave:
Jerusalem is a land of conflict and strife, security fences and checkpoints, a land where three faiths -- Christianity, Islam, and Judaism .

"From this country our faith began and in this country our whole essence of Christianity was started in this area of the world," explained Steven Khory of Calvary Jerusalem Baptist Church.

Yet it's a place where the Christian minority is disappearing.

"You feel like choking and there is no way out,"
Palestinian Christian Rani Espionoli said.

Tens of thousands of Christian pilgrims come to Via Dolorosa each year to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and visit other Christian holy sites.

Yet, many Christians who actually live in the Holy Land are leaving and because of fear where believers routinely visit, but never stay.

It's an alarming About 45,000 Christians lived in Jerusalem in 1940. Now, there are less than 10,000.

From Jerusalem to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ, Christians are leaving by the thousands. Those now living in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank total only about 150,000 -- less than 2 percent of the population.

"If Christians exodus continues, who's left in the houses of worship here?" Brian Bush, president of the Christian Foundation for the Holy Land, questioned. "There's no voice to praise God. It's just empty stones and monuments and museums and that would be a tragedy."

Christians get harsh treatment from Jews

Espionoli says many believers are leaving because of harsh treatment. He works in Nazareth and says some of his Christian friends have been assaulted and had their cars and homes vandalized.

"Some people, they get persecuted physically, verbally," he said. "This is something (that is) getting tougher... not only in the West Bank and Gaza, but it is moving also to the Christians up in the north and in Israel... Jerusalem, and in the Galilee area."

Less than a year later, Israeli Messianic teen Ami Ortiz miraculously survived a mail bomb attack by a Jewish extremist.And Last year old historical church was burned down by the Jews.

There have been less deadly, but also troubling, attacks against Jerusalem's Calvary Baptist Church. The church has been vandalized repeatedly.

Pastor Khory said church signs have been torn down and Christians harassed. Despite ongoing pressure, he's determined to persevere.

Khory said. "We must stay and we must take a stand as more and more Christians are leaving the country.

"We must stay behind," he continued. "Somebody has to."


News spoke with Bishop Twal, the leader of one Catholic church in Jerusalem, about Christians leaving Jerusalem. He said he believes the exodus is due to increased violence and conflict

Bishop Twal said he believes Palestinian Christians will return to the Holy Land once there is peace. In the meantime, groups like the Christian Foundation for the Holy Land are working to keep Christians in the country.

Since War on Gaza broke where Jews killed Christians and Muslims Palestinian.

Some have left because scared of their safety and they lack jobs.

One Christian worker to News he plans to stay in the Holy Land.

"I see Christians from all over the world coming here, but I was born here and I have decided to remain here and teach my children about it and what it means for us as Christians," he said.

Sister Trudy Navuurs is with the Ecce Homo Convent.

"Once they have work, it is an incentive to stay because as you know they are very family oriented people. And so, they really don't want to leave," she explained.

Bishop Twal wants Christians worldwide to encourage Palestinian Christians to remain.

"They can find work and so on in Central America and elsewhere," he said. "[But] they will never find another Holy Land. They will never find their religious roots... only here we have our roots."

Poor Palestine Christians
their plead only get attention by the Young American Activists with gold heart
but the Young Americans meet fatal and paying with their life instead.

I really admired the
muslims Palestinian bravery

As the Jews mostly occupied and fully control
over the country
getting jobs
and proper education is very difficult there,
and fearing of losing their life if they push further.

The Christians and Catholic Churches are historic
and leaving is not a perfect answer as in no time
The Jews will burn and demolishing their old churches
just like they did to our muslim's mosques.
Israel does not make any difference between Muslims or Christians or whatever,
IF you are not a Jew (Yahudi)
you will suffer the discrimination !!!

- Extremist Jews settlers who burned the Mosque of the Prophets in the village of Beit Fajar, west of Bethlehem, were met with wide popular and official condemnation. The occupation authorities imposed an Israeli blockade on the town of Beit Fajar, The Israeli soldiers put up checkpoints at the entrance of the town and tried to prevent Palestinian officials and journalists from entering the village. According to Palestinian security officials, representatives of the civil administration and liaison officers of the Palestinian military made an agreement with the Israeli forces to open the site in order to investigate the incident.

There was a gathering of hundreds of angry citizens in front of the mosque, chanting slogans against the heinous crime that targeted the mosque. They were stressing that the crimes would increase against their holy places.

Mr Mahmoud Taqataqa, a witness, said that he awoke in the early morning, approximately 2:45 am, when he heard the settlers taking off the door of the mosque. He approached them asking the settlers to leave the area, but they forced him away at gunpoint at which time he went to other houses to awaken the other citizens of Beit Fajar.

Mr Mahmoud, also said that the settlers had the protection of the Israeli occupation forces. They did not intervene nor did they try to stop the settlers form doing this heinous crime. He indicated that the Israeli occupation forces only stepped in when the citizens of the village approached the masque and started clashing with the settlers who had collected copies of the Quran and started to burn them in the center of the mosque.

For his part, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein, said that “there is nobody on the face of the universe who can justify this cowardly act, stressing to describe this heinous crime on this house of God, stressing that is comes as part of the fierce attacks on the Palestinian territories.”


Mr Hussein stressed that the focus of the attacks on religious monuments is contrary to religious laws and international norms, which prohibits attacks on holy sites and symbols of religion. He goes on to explain that this act shows the reality of this right wing israeli extremist government. The government cooperated with the setters goals and projects, they came to the site under the protection of the Israeli occupation.

The Sheikh Mohammed Hussein sent a letter to Arab leaders, in particularly to the Arab Monitoring Committee asking to take a strong position in support of the Palestinian people and their national authority and leadership, represented by the PLO. Calling on them not to leave the Palestinians alone in front of the arrogance of the occupation. Stressing that Palestinian land is sacred land and is therefore is entrusted to the care of Arabs and Muslims wherever they are found.

NABLUS,
Jewish settlers and Israel soldiers set fire to the main mosque in Luban Al-Sharqiya village, south of Nablus, at dawn Tuesday burning it completely.

Head of the Luban council Mr Jamal Daraghmeh said in a press statement that around 3 am residents heard vehicles driving around the area of the mosque.

"But at 3:45, when the mosque's imam arrived at the site to prepare for the morning prayers, he saw the mosque on fire. The fire consumed 80%, maybe 90% of the mosque."

The Jews have earlier burnt the Yasuf and Hawara mosques also in Nablus district

Palestinian sources said that a number of Israeli settlers, and described , burning a mosque in a village in the city of Nablus on Friday, while referring to clashes between Palestinians and the Israeli army .

The Palestinian news agency that the official settlers "burned early Friday, a mosque in the village of Yasouf south of Nablus, and inflicted considerable damage."
The agency quoted one official Ghassan Douglas settlement in the northern West Bank as saying that "dozens of Jews settlers from neighboring Tabuah stormed the village in the early morning, and raided a mosque after the main gate and smashed poured incendiary substances and flammable inside and set it on fire, which destroyed large parts of the its contents. "

The agency said that "this attack comes after a series of attacks by Jews settlers in several villages in Nablus against the backdrop of the opinions of the rabbis called on Jews to kill Arabs and burning crops and destroying property."

As quoted from what the eyewitnesses as saying that "heavy clashes between citizens and Israeli soldiers and Jews settlers who camped on the outskirts of the village, where the Israel soldiers fired live ammunition, rubber bullets and bombs, tear the cave."

A spokesman for the Israeli police of the incident, Israel Radio quoted the report, said that the Grand Mosque in the town of Yasouf to the east of Salfit had been set on fire which led to the burning of the mosque, a library which contained many of the Holy Koran.
