Sister, I don't THINK that there's anything to prevent you from doing so (although you should double-check, I'm no expert), provided that you are appropriately covered!
If you want to do it, then go for it, there is no need to listen to anybody who tells you various reasons not to, unless their reasons are based in ISLAM.
You're right about getting fit - as the marathon takes a lot of training! If you can fit it in without sacrificing the needs of your deen and your family, then what's stopping you? And what a good opportunity to raise money for charity!
As for people saying that you can't do the marathon in full Islamic attire, I beg to differ...for the following reasons:
1) In Arab (and other Muslim) nations, the sight of a woman running/jogging/power-walking for the sake of her own fitness in full abayya and niqab is
not uncommon. I have seen many, many women do this, with complete ease. Insha'allah wear something in a light (but opaque) material, and you should have no problem!
2) As for men 'seeing you run'...where's the harm? Could somebody post some
evidence from the Qur'an/Sunnah as to why this should be avoided?
3) Unless you become super-fit (insha'allah!!), actually
running the marathon will be a very difficult task indeed! Most 'fun runners' alternate between jogging, walking, and the occasional sprint. This is a 26-mile race, after all!
I'm glad you raised this issue sister, since I'm going to be doing something similar soon (a 10k walk/run), to raise money for breast cancer.
I hope you make the right decision. And if you decide not to, then it should be for
true Islamic reasons
