mukhannath..?

Asalaamu alaikum brothers and sisters...

My question is on the word "mukhannath" and what it means; I've seen it used many times and it came to the front of my head while reading another post on this board. I have looked it up on the internet and am a bit confused at what I've read. It seems to me that this is almost a condoned homosexual behavior (and I know of several "gay Muslim" groups that use this as "proof" they should be accepted).

I hope I am not opening a can of worms here and I hope my question is not inappropriate.

Allah knows best.

The word "mukhannath" from a psychological and medical stance means in Arabic:

"A child born with the reproductive parts of a male and a female simultaneously"

[In English it would be: Hermaphrodite]

In other lingual use (non-psychological or medical) the word "mukhannath" would mean:

1. A man who has an appearance of woman in physical features (i.e. no facial hair, soft voice, etc.)

and/or

2. A man who speaks, dresses, and acts flamboyantly to seem like a woman

and/or

3. A man who *believes* that he is a woman mentally but he has a body of male

In local accents the word has *very strong* connotations..and if it is said to or about another man it is taken for a *grave insult* (men have literally *murdered* because they were labeled as such!..ao'otho billah!)..in Arab societies the uttering of this word is like someone calling another person a fa**** (in American slang)

In any aspect however...the word does NOT provide ANY justification for someone to be *gay* (I won't say "Muslim gay"..I don't know how that works..astaghfirullah al-adheem!)...as in the first stance..a *physical condition* has to be *present* which is RARE and hardly ever exists in *every single* homosexual...in another it is about physical features which do not necessarily contribute to someone's homosexuality (i.e. there are men who have this issue but they are heterosexual in every other aspect)..the rest of the meanings infact *condemn* homosexuality due to the fact that they stand for *mental* and/or *emotional* state of *being* which most likely has to do with psychological problems

So these "groups" are using a term with immense ignorance..as within it are definitions which *condemn* them and all that they stand for!

And don't worry akhi..inshallah you're not opening a can of anything..on the contrary..you can very well be clarifying a misunderstanding for others with your question

Inshallah this helped you though

All these answers given by Muslimah86 are true and will immediately come to mind. This term is also rarely used among scholars to refer to some one who has 2 contradictory ideas and yet he believe both ideas are true without realizing that he is wrong. This use has also a derogatory notion although not as bad as the ones mentioned by Muslimah86 .
