Two members of a 'happy slapping' gang killed a Muslim pensioner outside a mosque for fun.

The schoolboys attacked Ekram Haque, 67, in front of his three year-old granddaughter, Marian.

Mr Haque, a retired care worker, collapsed after being hit twice over the head as he walked home in Church Lane, Tooting, South London.

He suffered severe brain injury when his head hit the pavement and died a week later in hospital.

Attack: Mr Haque passed away at St George's Hospital, Tooting, where he had been on a life-support machine for a week after the attack

The two killers, then aged 14 and 15, had attacked two other men only 20 seconds earlier in the same road.

They had also taken part in a happy-slapping attack on a married elderly couple five days previously, kicking and stamping on them in their own home.

Prosecutor Brian Altman QC told the Old Bailey: 'The prosecution says this was a wanton and cowardly attack which was quite deliberately targeted on middle-aged and elderly men for fun and for the defendants' own pleasure.

'They were planned and involved a shared intention to do their targeted victims physical harm, which indeed happened.'

The two killers regularly took part in a happy-slapping sprees, filming their violence on strangers under the name 'Lane Gang Productions'.

Mr Altman added:'Video clips recorded these two defendants in a so-called happy slapping spree called Lane Gang Productions, Lane referring to Church Lane.

'One of them strikes or slaps an unsuspecting person and the other records it on a mobile phone or camera.

'The youths then run off jeering and laughing at these escapades.'

Three teenagers were originally charged with the murder of Ekram Haque, 67,and were due to stand trial this week.

But the prosecution accepted pleas to lesser offences after consulting with the victim's family.

Two of the youths, now aged 15 and 16, pleaded guilty to manslaughter of Mr Haque.

The charge against the third, who was 14 at the time but is now 15, will lie on the file.

Mr Altman said: 'It is a case of two youths creeping up on a defenceless elderly and vulnerable man minding his own business and deliberately attacking him with the obvious intention to do him some harm.

'The two blows did not themselves inflict serious injury. It was the unhappy and all too familiar tale of a blow stunning or rendering Mr Haque unconscious by which he fell backwards, hitting the back of his head, suffering a complex fracture leading to secondary brain injury of which he died a week later.'

Mr Altman said the youngest boy 'stood by' and did not hit Mr Haque but ran off with the other two after the attack.

He told the court that the prosecution had consulted with the son of Mr Haque before accepting the pleas.

'One understands the sentiments and emotions but Mr Haque was very understanding about the position in this case,' Mr Altman added.

'Manslaughter was always a realistic alternative given the nature of this attack and the way in which death resulted in this case.'

He said there was no evidence that any of the boys were armed with a weapon.

The oldest boy and the youngest boy also admitted two charges of actual bodily harm against Jushbhai and Jasumati Patel on August 26, 2009.

The pair had been part of a gang sitting on a wall outside the couple's house on Church Lane.

When Mrs Patel, 72, tried to move the youths on, two forced their way into the house and began attacking them.

Mr Altman added: 'Adding to the frightening ordeal that this must have been, one of the youths kicked her in the stomach, forcing her to the hallway floor.

'Her husband, who had followed his wife into the hallway was himself kicked to the floor by one of the two youths.

'Both youths then kicked and stamped on the couple while they were on the floor.'

Mr Patel, 78, then called the police.

All three defendants also pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm of Ataa-ul Hasan Mir and Imdad Bukari on August 31, 2009, on the same day as the attack on Mr Haque.

Mr Altman described them as 'simultaneous attacks on Mr Mir and Mr Bukari 20 seconds earlier on the same street.'

The friends had been attacked outside a mosque during Ramadan after leaving a prayer service.

The gang had approached the pair and given a 'signal' asking what the time was.

They were then both punched to the head.

Just yards down the road and seconds later, Mr Haque was attacked.

Ekram Haque was born in Calcutta and moved to Belfast in search of work in 1972.

He met his wife there and they moved to London in the early 1980s.

Mr Haque originally worked in textiles but later became a warden in a home for the disabled. He retired last year.

The case continues

That is just horrifying. I have my opinion on what they should do to those kids, but I'll keep it to myself. Just horrible that people (especially kids!) would do something like that for fun...

I wonder how these kids would feel if they should watch how they own grandparents will kick in front of they eyes. Maybe they would clap they hands then too?

:( I feel sick after reading this post but don´t think they were attacked in cause of religion. Victims might be anyone.

As-salamu 'Aleykum!

Aye, This is crazy Subhanallah! I personally know some teens who've formed a "gang" and asaulted innocent strangers on the streets for fun here, na'udhu billah. Nowadays, most crimes seem to be done by "teens", it's actually like a game to them:(
May Allah guide this generation of ummah wallahi, things just get worse everytime.

Unfortunately to those teens it comes too late when they realise "game is over" and they have to spend half or even whole they life in prison.

Many western societies are "sick". Kids are thinking hitting and kicking others is cool and just fun like movies and video games.

Wa'alaykum asalaam.

The young gang members of London have a reputation for this, they make videos of it on their mobiles, which spread. The think it's funny and cool, I've never heard of someone being killed as a consequence. I remember seeing a video where people on the street or buses were being 'happy slapped'. That's why the police started to clamp down on such videos, by prosecuting the culptrits.
