Hi, my name is Brian. I am a college student in the US. I was raised catholic but as of right now I really do not subscribe to any belief. I find find all religions to be fasinating and I have done my best to learn about all of them. I am taking a class on islamic scripture this semester as well as a history course on the middle east. I would describe myself to being a very well informed person but with all of the misconceptions of arab, semetic and persian people as of late, and especially because I am american, it is extemely important to learn all that I can. I have been reading the Koran(Qur'an? I don't know how to properly address it) for the last 4 years and it is a wonderful piece of literature. When I was in high school I worked in a pharmacy that had a muslim pharmacist, Mahmoud was his name, and he explained so much and answered all of my questions. I am also thinking about taking some side classes in arabic as I would love to be able to communicate with people that speak it. Buttt after that long intro I really only had one question....is the phrase "As-Sal?mu `Alaykum" the proper way to greet a person who speaks arabic? Mahmoud taught me this phrase, and many of the people in my class use it. I was just wondering if it is the right thing to do. Thanks!!!!

First thing first, a warm welcome to TTI!

As for the greeting, 'As salamualikum', every Muslim greet each other with that not just arab speaking.
Assalamualaikum= Peace be upon you. The writing in arabic is this way, ':salam2:'.

So, whenever someone greet us with that, we return the greeting with, 'Wa' alaikumsalam'. Which means 'And peace be upon you'. The arabic writing is .

Glad to know you. welcome to the site .I am a muslim . I believe : in the holy books of prophets mosus and Jesus are some evidences that show those prophets order their followers to become muslim ! especialy from current bible I can prove to you.If you are sure that the way that God wants us to worship him is among three main religions (Christianity,Jewdism,Islam) so congratulations it is only one small step to embrace the truth. I assure you if you focus on this area you will com to the conclusion very soon.
By the way, I have been to middle east esp Iran and I can give you much clear information about them , than you can get from the media !

It's better to write "Qur'an" as opposed to "Koran". It's much closer to the Arabic pronunciation of the word.


Assalamu Alaikum means "peace be unto you". It's the greeting we Muslims use to greet each other. There's a more fuller version which is Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh [meaning "Peace be unto you and the mercy of God and His blessings"].
