Our Tongue
Slip of the tongue, or a little twist
So easy it seems, but at what risk?
What all we do, with this little piece of flesh
From morning to night, we don’t give it any rest
As soon as we are up, something we have to say
We don’t know why, but that has become our way
Why can’t we control it, why do words keep rolling away
We don’t stop to think, it will be to our dismay
If we consider talking a lot to be cool
We are so naïve, and making ourselves a fool
We have to compete, and even better be
When it comes to talking, that is all we see
We forget the hurt and scars, this tongue can bring
It can be more severe, than an insect’s sting
Why don’t we speak good, or just stay quiet
For babbling constantly, may cause a riot
Shouldn’t we remember, what we have been told
To guard our tongues, our words control
Glad tidings of Jannah, did Our Prophet convey
To the ones who safeguard their tongues, in every way
Slander and Gheeba, sarcasm, insult and degrade
Our tongue has to suffer a continuous parade
The angels write each and every word, we forget
It’s too late, when afterwards we regret
If we sincerely want to change ourselves
The first step we should take, is talk a little less
Guarding our tongues is not so difficult if we try
Remember the consequences, in this dunya and when we die
All our good deeds, if we don’t want to waste
Then, charge of our tongue we have to take
Zikr, Quraan and lots of duas, are more befitting
Some standing and lying as well as while sitting
Kind words, advice and teaching, just to name a few
Are among the good things that our tongue can do
Slip of the tongue, or a little twist
