Pearls of Wisdom

1. Renunciation of the world is reduction of hope for worldly gain -- it is not eating coarse foods or wearing a rough cloak.

2. Flesh eaters are those who backbite -- they eat human flesh.

3. Certainty is that every affliction be considered sent by Allah.

4. Be warned of being envious of the higher rank of any Muslim -- for it is a sign of ingratitude to Allah.

5. Be warned of ignoring warnings of God Most High and express dejection of His promises -- for it causes infidelity.

6. Sell not the friendship of the Lord for the friendship of the world and its possessions.

7. Worse than sin against God is sin against man.

8. For the people of the world sleep is more profitable than keeping awake -- for then they keep off worldly discourses during sleep. [Above quotes by Sufyan al Thawri radi Allah anhu]

^^Jazaaki Allaahu khaayr for sharing those quotes.

As I've gathered through the quotes, seems like it has a word representing it, such as:

1. Renunciation of the world is reduction of hope for worldly gain -- it is not eating coarse foods or wearing a rough cloak.

. .is called as being "zuhood". A man who takes of the world only that of his needs/neccesity. It does not mean he is renuncing the world completely and only focusing on Aakhirah, but taking only a little of the world.

4. Be warned of being envious of the higher rank of any Muslim -- for it is a sign of ingratitude to Allah.

Higher rank which means positions or status, right? Because in a hadeeth ( I heard in a kulliyah recently) that two things we are allowed to be envy of are: A wealthy man who spends his money for goodness and charity and a knowledgeable man who is given wisdom and ilm' and teaching it to others. So, only in these two cases, we are allowed to envy (in a good way, of course. Not in a way that can cause "diseases" of the heart).

As for this quotes, I have some hard time trying to understand and pondering over its literary meanings:

7. Worse than sin against God is sin against man.

Mind to share your thoughts or point of view, inshaAllaah? :)

sister Aisya al-Humaira: regarding the quote # 7....i think its meant that Allah can forgive any sin done against Him like not praying or fasting if He wishes...but He will not forgive like murder and abuse until that person forgives.
