Question about praying

Today was my 1st day at Tajweed class/Masjid! :D Lol, I really liked it, and anyway, about the question:

So, when it was time to pray Maghrib, we prayed and all that and as soon as I was done they told me to pray 2 more sunnah rakahs, but they told me to move from the place where I orignally prayed Maghrib and pray the sunnah rakahs somewhere else. Like, to switch places and pray...
Umm...Why? I seriously don't know and it was actually like my first time praying sunnah rakahs as well [I've only been praying for like 2 months, and I'm sorta new to it. :S]. So yeah, why do you have to move when you're praying the next bit? And do you HAVE to do it?

If anyone would take the time to answer my dumb question, I'd really appreciate it! :D
Thanks!:hijabi:

Question: Has any proof been reported for changing one's place in order to perform the Sunnah following the obligatory prayer?

Response: Yes, it has been reported in the hadeeth of Mu'aawiyah that he said:

"The Prophet :saw2: ordered us not to join one prayer with another prayer without leaving or speaking (in between), [Transmitted by Muslim and Aboo Daawood]

So the scholars have understood from this that a gap must be made between the obligatory and the Sunnah - either by speaking or by changing one's place.
