:salam2:
i wanted to know if someone actually has to go to a formal university such as Al-Azhar or the University of Madinah to be considered a " scholar " of islam. the reason why i ask this, is that i know that in order for someone to get into these schools they have to meet a certain age requirement etc. is there something in the university that can't be learned outside of it? i understand that anyone can have the knowledge of a doctor but the difference lies in them actually practicing medicine. but a muslim not considered a scholar is striving for all of the same things as a scholar viz. jannah. i would like to have the knowledge of a scholar someday, inshAllah, but i don't have the means and physical capability, and age requirments to go to such schools. could such people ever be considered legitimate? i have no problem asking a scholar about something that i do not know, but at times we are aske certain things by non muslims and we can't readily give them the answer. i could always refer a scholar, but who's guaranteed that we will make it on the way to the scholar. the length of our lives isn't promised. but what if a non formally educated muslim has the answer to that question?
