question about scholars of islam

i wanted to know if someone actually has to go to a formal university such as Al-Azhar or the University of Madinah to be considered a " scholar " of islam. the reason why i ask this, is that i know that in order for someone to get into these schools they have to meet a certain age requirement etc. is there something in the university that can't be learned outside of it? i understand that anyone can have the knowledge of a doctor but the difference lies in them actually practicing medicine. but a muslim not considered a scholar is striving for all of the same things as a scholar viz. jannah. i would like to have the knowledge of a scholar someday, inshAllah, but i don't have the means and physical capability, and age requirments to go to such schools. could such people ever be considered legitimate? i have no problem asking a scholar about something that i do not know, but at times we are aske certain things by non muslims and we can't readily give them the answer. i could always refer a scholar, but who's guaranteed that we will make it on the way to the scholar. the length of our lives isn't promised. but what if a non formally educated muslim has the answer to that question?

W-Salam,

In order for someone to be Scholar you will need (Ijaza, i.e. permission) from another Scholar which means that you will have to study somewhere....In our times these places are Islamic universities, Madaris etc.

Being a Scholar requires years and years of dedicated study just like trying to be a Doctor, Engineer etc.

Acquiring knowledge is the responsibility of every Muslim & should be done at all times...Reading a Fatwa on TTI is acquiring knowledge.

We all get asked questions that we dn't know the answer to; simply tell the person that you will get back to them...Ask & then get back...

I agree with globalpeace, if you don't know the answer just say so. It's better to wait for the right answer than acting on a half-answer that you are not quite sure about. And if your intention is right, don't worry about life being short and something happening on the way.
