Ibn Qayyim wrote "some of the Salaf (predecessors) said, "Sins lead to Kufr (disbelief) just as kissing leads to sexual intercourse, singing (music) leads to Zina (illegal sexual intercourse), an unlawful look leads to Ishq (infatuating love) and illness leads to death." Ibn al-Qayyim related from al-Jariri:

“I was told of a man from the Children of Israel who had a need that he wanted fulfilled by Allah. So, he engaged in constant worship and then asked Allah for his need. When he did not see that his need was fulfilled, he spent the night blaming himself, saying: “O self! What is wrong with you that is preventing your need from being fulfilled?”

And he spent the night sad and holding himself to account, saying: “By Allah, the problem is not with my Lord. Rather, the problem is with myself,” and he remained in such a state of holding himself responsible until his need was finally taken care of.”

Ibn al-Qayyim writes:

"Of the most unbelievable realities is that you know Allah, yet still do not truly love Him; and that you hear His caller (i.e., the Prophet salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam), but still do not respond to him; and that you are aware of how profitable it is to deal with Him, yet you choose to deal with other than Him; and that you are cognizant of the power of His anger, yet are still blind to it; and that you taste the pain of being cut off from him as you sin but still do not find comfort in worshipping Him...
But even more unbelievable than all of that is that you know you need Him and cannot do without His help, yet still you turn away, and busy yourself in that which distances you from Him."

Ibn Al Qayyim said:

“For the people of sins there are three great rivers with which they purify themselves in this world and if these do not suffice in purifying them, then they are purified in the river of Hellfire on the Day of Judgment:

1. A river of sincere repentance.

2. A river of good deeds that drowns the sins that surround it.

3. and a river of great calamities (that befall the sinner) that expiate (his sins).

Therefore, when Allah intends good for His slave, He enters him into one of these 3 rivers, so he comes purified and cleansed on the Day of Judgement, not requiring the fourth purification.

And the fourth purification:

The river of Hellfire on Yaum Al-Qiyamah. So swim in the river of repentance and doing good deeds and have patience in the river of calamities. And do not neglect these before a day comes when you will be drowned in the river of Hell-fire whose fuel is men and stones”

Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said:

"The destruction of the heart occurs by security [in this Dunya] and negligence; its fortification occurs by fear and remembrance. If the heart renounces the pleasures of the Dunya, it settles upon the [pursuance of] pleasures of the Hereafter, and amongst those who call towards it. Should the heart become content with the pleasures of the Dunya, those pleasures [of the hereafter] cease [to continue].

Yearning for Allah and his meeting is like the... gentle breeze blowing upon the heart, extinguishing the blaze of the Dunya. Whosoever caused his heart to settle with his Lord shall be in a state, calm and tranquil, and whosoever sent it amongst the people shall be disturbed and excessively perturbed. For the love of Allah shall not enter a heart, which contains the love of this world, except as a camel, which passes through the eye of a needle.

Hence, the most beloved servant before Allah is the one whom He places in His servitude, whom He selects for
His love, whom He causes to purify his worship for Him, dedicates his objectives for Him, his tongue for His remembrance, and his limbs for His service.

The heart becomes sick, as the body becomes sick, and its remedy is al-Tawbah and protection [from transgression]. It becomes rusty as a mirror becomes rusty, and its clarity is obtained by remembrance. It becomes naked as the body becomes naked, and its beautification is at-Taqwa. It becomes hungry and thirsty as the body becomes hungry and thirst, and its food and drink are knowledge, love, dependence, repentance and servitude." From: Al-Fawaa’id [pg. 111-112]
