Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet said “If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 4, Book 54, Number 537)

The new buzz on antibiotics

Tuesday, 1 October 2002

The surface of flies is the last place you would expect to find antibiotics, yet that is exactly where a team of Australian researchers is concentrating their efforts.

Working on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defences to survive rotting dung, meat and fruit, the team at the Department of Biological Sciences, Macquarie University, set out to identify those antibacterial properties manifesting at different stages of a flys development.

“Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before, said Ms Joanne Clarke, who presented the groups findings at the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference in Melbourne this week. The project is part of her PhD thesis.

The scientists tested four different species of fly: a house fly, a sheep blowfly, a vinegar fruit fly and the control, a Queensland fruit fly which lays its eggs in fresh fruit. These larvae do not need as much antibacterial compound because they do not come into contact with as much bacteria.

Flies go through the life stages of larvae and pupae before becoming adults. In the pupae stage, the fly is encased in a protective casing and does not feed. “We predicted they would not produce many antibiotics,” said Ms Clarke.

They did not. However the larvae all showed antibacterial properties (except that of the Queensland fruit fly control).

As did all the adult fly species, including the Queensland fruit fly (which at this point requires antibacterial protection because it has contact with other flies and is mobile).

Such properties were present on the fly surface in all four species, although antibacterial properties occur in the gut as well. “You find activity in both places,” said Ms Clarke.

“The reason we concentrated on the surface is because it is a simpler extraction.

The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract.

When this was placed in a solution with various bacteria including E.coli, Golden Staph, Candida (a yeast) and a common hospital pathogen, antibiotic action was observed every time.

“We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds,” said Ms Clarke. Ultimately these will be chemically synthesised.

Because the compounds are not from bacteria, any genes conferring resistance to them may not be as easily transferred into pathogens. It is hoped this new form of antibiotics will have a longer effective therapeutic life.

They are many people who used to reject this authentic hadeeth because they put their Aql (reasoning) before Naql (revelation).

A lesson to be learnt is that we shouldn't reject authentic hadeeth if we are unable to comprehend its wisdom due to our human limitations.

Wasalaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi

They should just test out each and every hadith and see how it all comes true :) Mashallah, Islam is the most advanced science, but they call it ignorance and backwardness..

you know what just a few days ago, i had come across this hadith page on an atheist website where they had included some hadith to make fun of Islam. I had read the news article before so i emailed them.

My initial email.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi!

You have listed the following hadith on the hadith page on your site
http://www.bowness.demon.co.uk/hdth.htm
Volume 4 Number 537
The Prophet said 'If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.'

Below is an article related to this hadith that people might find intriguing. Kindly link this article to the above hadith on your page specifically the following portion.

"We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds," said Ms Clarke. Ultimately these will be chemically synthesised.

So the research blows apart Muhammad's idea that one wing has a cure for the disease, which is on the other wing.

================================================

that's when i became impatient and somehow managed to keep my head and gave the following response

--------------------------------------------------------------

Hi!

Thank you for a quick response.

The research story mentions the presence of antibiotics on the surface of the fly (all four types that were tested). it doesn't mention any particulars of wings anywhere. i think it's important not to read in our ideas. The study was conducted to find new antibiotics and they found them on flies (and predominantly on the surface or wingspan of the fly) of all things.

In order to ascertain whether one wing has a disease and the other has the cure for it, a new study will have to conducted on samples of wings from various flies. if the results approach a 50/50 break up between antibiotics and disease then the hadith is 100% true.
The hadith has 2 parts

1. command - If a house fly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink)

from the study the easiest method found to extract the antibiotic was
"The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract."

so the command is established to be correct from the given study. No1 is a remarkable statement, because flies generally are associated with disease rather than cure; hence it's inclusion on you hadith page. Now please do not remove it; just add a link to the article (link given below) to the hadith. It would give your readers some extraordinary new knowledge.

2. Reason - one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.

the study presented doesnt say anything about the above. So empirically speaking nothing can be established about part 2. Scientifically speaking the above hypothesis (no2) is untested.

As of now, empirically the hadith is 50% correct. The other 50% is still untested. The muslims have believed both 1 and 2 to be true for 1400 years so any research coming from them may not be acceptable. However, the scientific community is welcome to verify statement 2 so that science may finally catch up with a 1400 year old statement (no 2) like it recently caught up with (no 1).

But until then, it's only fair to link the article below to the hadith on your page.

Im still waiting for a reply from them.

"Our research is a small part of a global effort for new antibiotics, but we believe we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before" said Ms.Joanne Clarke.

How ironical!! I wonder what this lady's reaction will be when she comes to know that someone beat her to the job 1400 years ago. =]

Holy Hadiths Batman!

As a microbiologist, I've had to work with some interesting materials that were used to detect bacteria in various things....Horseshoe Crab blood anyone? Used to detect the presence/absence of Gram Negative Bacteria.
Types of bacteria, generally more resistant to standard anti-biotic treatment. Types include salmonella, enterobacteriaceae, pseudomonas, moraxella, helicobacter, stenotrophomonas, bdellovibrio.

Thank for the very valuable information, and i pray for those people with their expertise, are convinced and submit to Allah (S.W.T) - 'There is no God, but Allah and Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is his messenger'.

Quran has so far, confirmed many advanced discovery of sciences, universe, the earth....etc that was already mentioned in 1400 years ago. May Allah (S.W.T) guides us to the right path and guide
Non believers to the truth, Ameen!

Is there anyone that can deny this??!!?.....subhana'Allah

jazak Allahu khairan,

I thought that the fly when it is faced with death secrets the antibodies to neutralize the poisons/disease so we don't get affected. This is what I heard before. I never knew that they are doing a study of it to benefit and cure for mankind.

I just think of the hadith, and you know how muslims are taught to be clean and never let poop or filth get on clothes, so we can pray. Just imagine how counter intuitive to say at that time 1400 years ago, a filthy fly that hangs around poop, waste, and dead living creatures, would go into your drink and the prophet, PBUH, says dip it in your drink, for one wing is disease and the other is a cure. subhan-Allah!

Allah has blessed us with Islam, subhanna wa ta'ala!
