Asslamo Allaikum,
This just happened (26MAY2007 @ 14:00 (GMT) & I feel really good about it!
Researching Sister Umm Hussain's thread about 2nd wife for a few days...
I was reading a book written about 100 years ago about having a 2nd wife and the reply was given in Arabic/Persian/Urdu and I couldn’t understand some Persian bits so I called the Imam and had an appointment after Dhohar Salah.
During my appointment this brother shows up and said that he wants to get married to a local refugee Sister (daughter of a scholar) so can he get married now or get an appointment?
I usually translate for the Imam & stuff so the Imam said that it is Masjid policy to bring some people who can vouch for you and testify on your behalf (i.e. you are Muslim, sister to be unmarried etc.) before you can get married; so we can give you an appointment for 11th of June to sort everything out.
They spoke little English or Arabic and we couldn’t speak their language.
I spoke to him afterwards and found out that the Sister has just got into the country a week ago & she doesn’t know anyone and he actually lives in Europe and she has nowhere to go so she wants to go & live with him in Europe but her father doesn’t want them to be in private without Nikah!
She offered me to talk to her father to ascertain that she is genuine; so I persuaded the Imam to let go of policy and perform the Nikah.
I took them to the Mosque office to do the paper-work while the Imam went to prepare a Khutbah and get another witness as I offered to be one. While I was registered them and I asked for Mah’r (dowry) and she said, “In my country women get a cow when they get married”. I said, “Well this is England & you can’t walk around with a cow, can you?”
So they ask me, “How much should it be?” I said, “that’s her right & you to agree”. They went outside and came back with a figure. I registered and printed the paper-work.
Then he said, “She is very beautiful and I love her and money is not enough, I want to give her more gifts
”. So the Mah’r (dowry) was quadrupled (multiplied by four). I had to rip the paper-work and print again but it was pretty nice and cordial, actually.
They both got married and then he put a ring on her and forced the Imam to stand next to them while I took pictures.
I have also performed Nikahs in the past and call me a softy but I like this sort of stuff!
I have performed Nikahs’ when both of them didn’t have any money so I had to fork out money from my own pocket to send them on a mini-honeymoon, but it’s always nice!
Its kinda nice to have these situations in today’s materialistic world, don’t you all think?
Jazakullah Khairun
P.S: Sunnah is soooo simple, yet so beautiful!
