To expose someone's shortcoming, act or word which he wants to conceal is slander or telling tales and is a major sin. If the matter thus exposed is true, the sin would lie in telling tales and exposing it, but if the exposed affair has no basis in fact and if something has been added to or subtracted from it or if it has been conveyed to others in a vile manner, then the sin of slander is added to that of telling tales.

which is a major sin, If it is a shortcoming is exposed, a third sin of hostility is also added to it.

Thus slandering and telling tales involves three major sins Caliph Umar ibn Abd-al-Aziz was once told something about someone, He said "Look, If we investigate what you have said and find that you have been wrong, you shall be what the verse indicates

.( if on evil-liver brings you Tidings) And if you are proved proved correct you shall be as described by i.e "slanderer and teller of tales." Or we can forgive you and forget what you have said." The man sought forgiveness and promised never to tell tales again.

Slander and telling of tales has been prohibited in many places in the Quran.

Hadith tells us that our Blessed Prophet said "let me tell you who are the worst among you. Those that go hitter and thither slandering and telling tales, those that cause friends to quarrel and part and those who seek out shortcomings of innocent people.

Another Hadith tells us that the teller of tales shall not go to Paradise .

Still another Hadith says that falsehood blackens the face (i.e. is a cause of shame) and slander and tale-telling is [cause of| torment in grave.

In Ihya ul 'ulum it is said that "When someone brings to you a talc, you should observe the following six points:

First do not confirm what he says, since he is a slanderer and his evidence is inadmissible:

Second, stop him from doing it and give him advice:

Third, regard this act of his as evil and worthy of punishment;

Fourth, because of this [slander], do not think ill of your absent brother [i.e. the one slandered);

Fifth, do not be curious and do not investigate the matter as this is a sin; and

Sixth, do not quote the slanderer, as thus you yourself shall become a slanderer.

Note: These days all of us are unknowingly and unwillingly committing this sin. Slandering, telling of tales, libeling have become common features of our social gatherings. This is a grave sin and has no earthly advantage: it does not fulfill any of our needs. Let us save ourselves from following this path of the Devil.

AsslaamuAlaikum,

JazakAllah sister.

In fact, this slanderin is at peaks in the women of Indian subcontinent. I hope you understand what do I mean.

It is a joke to say that there were two women sitting under a tree and they were quite. :D.

And same applies to the men also. May Allah save us all from this small looking but Horrible sin.

Jazakallhu-khairan sister, it was really a good reminder. And seems here are some ppl who read the chapter and do not take it seriously and generalise our poor indian girls. ( dont be angry bro BAS THODI TAANG KHEECH RAHA HOON) :D What you mentioned sister was absolutely correct. I think i can add some more to it. Allah SWT says in the Quran,
O you who believe! If a Fasiq (liar — evil person) comes to you with any news, verify it, lest you should harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful for what you have done. (6)

O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; Nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, Nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one's brother after having Faith [i.e. to call your Muslim brother (a faithful believer) as: "O sinner", or "O wicked"]. And whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zâlimûn (wrong-doers). (11) O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting)[] . And fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (12)
Al-Hujurat

And the two RUKUS (i.e. 2nd and 3rd) of Surah Noor are totally about salandering and its evil effects and how much Allah SWT dislikes it. May AllahSWT saves us all from this grievous sin.

I am incharge of many people where I work. From time to time I have to inform my manager how they are doing. I worry if this comes in catagory of slandering or backbiting.
May Allah help me.
