Law of smoking in islam
I. Said to be haram
they said that smoking cigaretes is haram,according to
Syaikhul islam Ahmad As Sanhuri Al Bahuti Al Hanbali Al Mashri, Syaikhul Al Malikiyah Ibrahim Allagani, Abul Ghaits Al Qasyasy Al Malikiy, Najmuddin bin Badruddin bin Mufassir Al quran Assyafi’i, Ibrahim bin Jam’an dan muridnya Abu Bakr bin Ahdal Al Yamani, Abdul Malik Al ‘Ishami, Muhammad bin Alamah, Assayyid Umar Al Bashri, Muhammad Al Khawaja dan Assayyid Sa’ad Al Balkhi Al Madani.
their reason back to the 3 main problem
1. it make you drunk
it mean cigaretes can covered your mind and make you lost your mind Although there is no desire to have fun with it,in other word it can drunk smoker and narrow your mind and breath,so they say it haram and they said a smoker cannot be an imam
2. make you weak and Narcolepsy
even though cigaretes didn't make you drunk, but it make the smoker weak and lazzy to work, also Narcolepsy is a desease which mark by heavy sleepy feel,kind similar with taking medicine. As hadis Ahmad and Abu Daud from Ummu Salmah that Rasulullah SAW forbid all things which is make drunk weak.
3. Dangerous and negatif effect
there is two kind :
a. Effeect to yous body
b. effect to your money Allah SWT said, ” Wala tubazzir tabzira, innal mubazzirina kaanu ikhwana Sayathin wakana syaithanu lirabbihu kafura” (Al Isra : 27),
II. Who say it makroh
this opimion said that cigaretes according syar'i is makroh,and this opinion said by Syaikh Abu Sahal Muhammad bin Al Wa’idz Al hanafi and the follower.
their reason :
1. the smoker cannot escape from the danger of cigaretes,little is dangerous what if many.
2. lack of money,it mean although the smoker did not spent their money a lot,but his money has decrease for something not to useful. it is better if the money is spent for something useful.
3. The bad smell can bother somebody next to, and law for eating or smoking it is makruh, similar with red or with onion.
4. Cigaretes will make buzzy and not aware to do good deed or decrease the perfectness of it.
5. Cigaretes will make the smokers weak when they cannot smoke it and their mind will affected.
Asyeikh Abu Sahal Muhammad bin Al Wa’idz Al hanafi then said : the source about cigaretes are makroh was (source)dalil Qath’i and dalil that said cigaretes haram was still Dzanni, All things which smell not good is makruh similar with onion and cigaretes is one of them, then he forbid who smoke to pray for jamaah in mosque.
III.Opinion who Allowed
this opinion said that cigaretes according syar'i is mubah(Allowed), this opinion from Al ‘Alamah Asyeikh Abdul Ghani Annablisi and Syeikh Mustafa Assuyuti Arrahbani.their Dalil (source)and reason about this is Al Ashlu Minal Asyai Al Mubah, core of everything is Mubah(Allowed) before there is shahih syar'i dalil(source) which turn it to haram.
the opinion who said that cigaretes make drunk and weak was not true,because drunk is mind lost with body move and narcolepsy is lost mind
unconscious, and both were not happen to the smoker,so it was not true to meke it haram. And about wasting money problem,it is not only about cigaretes and many other things much bigger where money we waste.
Then Syeikh Mustafa Assuyuti Arrahbani in Syarah “Ghayatul Muntaha” in fiqh Hanbali : everyone who analyze this issue had to had source from Ushuluddin and its branch,not just following your passion.
IV.Opinion who wasn't declare the law but explained it in detail
they said originally tobacco is clean herb and not make drunk and give side effect,originally law is mubah and that law can temporary change in syar'i according circumtances andcondition. if a some one smoke and have no side effect to his own mind and body then the law is Mubah (Allowed).and the opposite is Haram, if cigaretes is useful, use as medicine, then the law is fardhu(Must) .
V.Modern Oelama opinion
1. Syeikh Hasanain Makhluf (Ex Egypt Mufti), said originally law is mubah and can become haram and makruh,according to the side effect to the smoker.
2. Al Alamah Asyeikh Muhammad bin Mani’, Qatar ulama and most Najd ulama say it haram. As written in risalah Najd ulama and Syarah Ghayatul Muntaha page 332 by Syekh Muhammad bin Mani’.
3. Assyeikh Mahmud Syaltut (Syaikhul Azhar) in his fatawa said it haram
and he said,in islam law of haram and makruh doesn't have according to Nash and certain dalil(source) but enough with knowing the caouse and effect.

I do not like smoking but I never look at what Islam says about smoking. I have seen sisters smoking and I was in shock. I may not know what the Quran say about things such as smoking or drink but I was raise with good habits. Now, that I am learning about the Quran and it is meaning, I am grateful for my good habits. what is funny is why people still smke after it has been prove to cause lung cancer.
