When the vending machine chucks out 2 packets of sweets instead of one, what do you do? You only put the money in for one, but due to faults in the mechanism of the machine, 2 fall out?

What do you do ...

1) Leave it there?
2) Leave the amount of money the sweets are in the machine? (edit: I meant take them at the same time but just leave the money in there)
3) Say Alhamdulillaah and take it  ? (i.e. not bothered by it ..take it, leave nothing)

Number 1 is what I usually do in such case scenarios, (at the end of the day you havent paid for the sweets, theyre not yours) Ive never done number 2 but someone once suggested that? I wouldn't be comfortable with option 3 up there either ..but again, I know people who have certainly gone with that one.

What about yourselves, Im curious..

What a perplexing question out of such a small issue. The only thing that's ever happened to me and a vending machine is that it stole "stole" my money. I was told to fill in a form and send it off, but I figured a stamp would cost a third of what i paid (32p?), the complaint call probably costed half of that so I left it.

You know, given you receive more than what you paid, if you were to call to inform the company who "owns" the goods, they'll tell you to eat it... Best thing for me would be to leave it (unless the call is cheaper than the goods)! Who knows, you think it's "free" but taking it without permission will cost you in another way.

Well to be honest never have thinking about it, neither I do something like using machine for getting sweets and all. But anyway at first I thought what should I do with

1) at the beginning thought why should I leave it, but than I think that I would think- maybe the person who forgot it (I would think it even the machine gave it by a mistake) will come back and take it. Also remember many times in the shop- while I was putting products inside my basket (after paying) there was something 'which not belong to me' so I always left it. I think that would be the same with this kind of machine.

2) I do not understand it properly.

3) Might be I would say Alhamdulillah, but even than I wouldn't take it. if ALLAH would wish us to have it anyway, he would give it in some other way. As for things we think its best for us, it is not and the ones we think are the worst for us are not. In this case I would think like that. I mean- maybe for me to not take the sweets would be nothing, but the person who has bought it before me- left his/her last pocket money. :hearts:

Actually so simple question, but made me think a lot. I really now feel how my mind has been changed after entering Islam. :SMILY259:

Thank you for sharing this tread.

I have a tendency to do that..

On the other hand, anytime the vending machine has ''stolen'' my money I never thought to pursue it at all.

Alhamdulillaah lol.

I had something even more strange once a long time ago. I was walking passed a vending machine as a little boy and pressed the diet coke button. I kept walking until I heard the machine making noises. I went back to check it and I see a diet coke had popped out.

I took it. What was I supposed to do?

Honestly, if it is a small amount (less than $5) I wouldn't really care. If you report it, people will laugh at you. If you leave it, someone else will take it.

It would be a different scenario if for example you ordered a $2000 laptop and you accidently recieved two laptops in the mail. Not a small amount of money.

I once recieved a package by mistake, total value was about $60. I called the company and they asked me to ship it back to them so I did.

The other day I put in £1 to get a 45p chocolate and was expecting 55p change. Instead I got £2 change in 50ps and realised the remainder is due to a previous person leaving their change behind so i put the remainder back. I feel extremely uncomfortable taking money that's not mine HOWEVER in your case, that actually happened to me ages ago and I took the second chocolate that fell out without even considering if it is haraam or not but now thinking about it, I guess it is haraam as I didnt pay for it! I don't think many people understand why you've posted that as it seems like a small issue but I totally get it and I'll find out the answer insha'allah and let you know!

Praise be to Allah!
Salaamu 'alaykkum. This happened once when I was in the study area in my university. I got 2 chocolates, and there was one like hanging on its place. My friend came and kicked it for jokes and the 3rd chocolate fell. He actually said alhamdulillaah and was going to take it lol. I said, I don't know if it is halaal. So we went to the reception and told the guy there, and he said u can take it if u want. We refused, so the man at the reception put a small label saying "free chocolate" and we left the chocolate there.

But personally, I would try and find some staff working there and tell them, if not I will just leave it there. Best to always avoid doubts.

Well, I dont leave money there because someone will definatley pick it up.

I take both - eat one - and give the other one away.."paying it forward" I suppose.
I just find someone and say "I got this from the vending machine, but dont want it. It hasnt been opened, do you want it?" Of course they will take it, haha.

A while back in my old school, we had vending machines N then all of a sudden, one day when I went to school I saw that the front mirror part was broken from the sides, which means anyone can easily reach in and grab whatever they wanted without payin' for it. So, that whole day, the students were sneaking around, tryin' not to get caught by the teachers and doing exactly
that,(Including me.lol)....But I payed a sadaqah afterwards, so I hope Allah forgives me for it!:)

Anyways, back to the thread--I voted for choice '1', I believe that would be wiser n the best choice- but I guess the old me would've chosen '3'

Nice thread btw:biggrin:

Im sure this has happened to many many people, so I was curious as to how it was dealt with, I don't mean to give an issue undue importance and Ill try to explain what my train of thought was behind posting the thread inshaAllaah.

Agreed, fear of ridicule from other people, least of all the non-muslims should never have an influence on any of our actions.

But personally, I would try and find some staff working there and tell them, if not I will just leave it there. Best to always avoid doubts.
Sure, in my case I did just that and it wasn't a problem. (Just for the ref, no one in the office laughed at me alhamdulillaah)

Lol exactly, perhaps because its the fact that it is not being bought from a human being, but a machine? The reality of the action doesn't appear to come to light.

I remember I saw a muslim walk past a vending machine and there were sweets just hanging outside the threshold ..that person kicked the machine the sweets fell out, and off they went with them! Why steal for a packet of Polo mints?

If someone does not take something from a mere machine, then where is the likllihood of them cheating a human being, i.e. in the way of not paying thier zakah, consuming the wealth of orphans and other sinful acts derived from human greed? If we train from the small things inshaAllaah, things on a larger scale will eventually become unthinkable for us.

Thats just my 2 cents =)

Nice to read your replies, barakAllaahu feekum.

Walykom Assalaam,

Point taken. I haven't reached the level of the prophets, and I highly doubt I would ever get anywhere near them. But I pray to Allaah that I do, and we all do InshaAllaah.

This seems relevant to the discussion. Compare our behaviour to this!

One Apple Leads To His Marriage. A Beautiful Story!

SubhanAllaah, I hadn't thought of this story as the thread developed, but how relevant it seems now..

May Allaah allow us to awaken to the realisation that every incident in our lives should be a manifestation of taqwa, may we live each moment with the intention to attain His pleasure and forgiveness, may Allaah forgive our shortcomings, Ameen!

I hate vending machines- but I agree with this sister- take what you paid for, and give the other back to the store it's in- or give it to someone else. :SMILY259:
