KISMAYO, Somalia Dec 9 (Garowe Online) - The Islamist Al Shabaab faction that controls different regions of southern and central Somalia has destroyed many graves after accusing relatives of "worshiping dead people."

Sheikh Hassan Yakub, the Al Shabaab spokesman in Kismayo, told reporters Tuesday that the group decided to destroy the graves because the practice of praying at graves is ' un-Islamic.'


"We destroyed graves where people used to worship dead people," Sheikh Yakub said, adding: "This practice was especially normal during Eid times."

Eid-ul-Adha, the Muslim festival of sacrifice, was celebrated across the Islamic world on Monday.

Local elders told Somali news agency Garowe Online that Al Shabaab destroyed the graves of well-known religious personalities honored by the Sufi sect.

Relatives and supporters regularly prayed at these grave sites, following centuries of mystical tradition prohibited under Islamic law.

On Tuesday, Al Shabaab fighters briefly controlled the border town of Beled Hawo, in Gedo region along the Somali-Kenya border.

Ahmed Mohamed Bargus, the Beled Hawo mayor, confirmed to reporters that Al Shabaab fighters entered the town and briefly controlled the police station after disarming a number of officers there.

Al Shabaab commander Hassan Jibril Jama told Beled Hawo residents during a public speech that they came to town "in pursuit of enemies."

The Islamist fighters withdrew from Beled Hawo later Tuesday, but residents did not know where they went. Al Shabaab fighters currently control several districts in Gedo, including the provincial capital Garbaharey.

Al Shabaab's presence in Beled Hawo was preceded by a two-day visit to the town by clan warlord-turned-Somali lawmaker, Col. Barre Hirale.

Hirale's clan militia was violently expelled out of the southern port of Kismayo in August, after ruling the port town for nearly a decade.

Separately, Ethiopian troops traveling inside Lower Shabelle region were ambushed in Wanla Weyn district by Al Shabaab fighters in a brief gunbattle.

Local reports said no civilians were killed during the firefight, which comes a time of increased Ethiopian military activity along the road linking Mogadishu to Baidoa.

In Jan 2008, Singapore, there is a report of graves being vandalize. This time is the cemetery for the Ahmadiyya.
There are only about 220 people of Ahmadi in Singapore & they are pretty invisible.

We Muslim have co-exist with them peacefully & even their place of worship is a few block away from one of our Masjid.
Not sure who is the culprit.

it was sufi graves they were destroying and it is shirk to pray to graves. that's why they destroyed it. and shirk is the biggest sin in islam. insh'Allah victory to the mujahideen

brother Akhi what brother heegaan meant is Muslims who worship graves of dead pepole, and this is big Shirk !! "i believe those Muslims need to be educated and to know well that what they are doing are Shirk and it is a big sin!!"

it is diffrent from your story,you are talking about Ahmadis who are not recognized as Muslims (they believe that Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who founded their movement in Qadian in the Punjab in 1889, was the messiah.) and it not clear if Muslims did that to their graves and i hope they did not,still destroying their graves are not right and i am against it totally.

it is only cause more hatred and troubles between them and other Muslims living with them.

the same happened on 6 December when Israeli settlers desecrated a cemetary for Palestinians. all these actions wether destroying, or insulting are not right and we Muslim do not accept such activities

i hope those fighters come to pakistan and do the same thing here .........praying to dead people is so stupid but i dont get whats with people in pakistan who think its some form of short cut to get what u want from Allah (swt).....TOTALLY DUMB!

In the decades they've had power, they haven't once done such a thing on a mass scale (with respect to graves, not other forms of idols) to my knowledge, in fact the opposite is more the case in some areas. So what makes you think that all of a sudden they will level the graves? The two groups are different (even in `aqaa'id); their main similarity being that they are both fighting wars!?

If someone has power/authority/control over a given country, which Al-Shabaab seem to have, then it's not a case where they "shouldn't have done so", rather it would seem obligatory upon them! Of course, every situation is different from another, and I don't see how destroying Ahmedi graves would've caused any benefit at all!?

The people need to be educated in tawheed more than anything to be quite honest, then inshaAllaah, the previous graveworhsippers would smash the site of worship themselves. What a site it would be

Fantastic! I agree with all of you about worshiping the dead is shirik. However history have shown that many important figure in Islam who's grave have being destroy to shop graves worshiping e.g the Shias, Sufis. Still, they rebuild those graves & continued to rebuild until present day today.

However, to make my point clear that we the Sunni have view grave worshiping shirik according to Quran. Let them Sufi & Shia go & do their business. They will be judge by Allah on the day of Judgment.

We have to coexist with them & practice tolerance. They are only a minority & they do not reflect the true teaching of Islam. Instead of fighting them, we should show the world that true Islam is the Sunna Islam. They are many video about sunna Islam on the internet. Many converts to true teaching of Islam compare to other.eg.Shia,Sufis,etc..

In a test, most will pass, some will fail. Those who study correctly & Intelligently will surely pass. Those who are ignorant & lazy will fail. Make sense to you?
