Asalaamu'alaykum.
Fajr prayer is very important as we all know, but how many of us offer this salaah? I came across some useful info on the net, so I thought I'd share. I hope it is of benefit. May Allaah enable us to put the following into practice and may we take heed from this. Ameen.
The fact is that as a Muslim you must wake up for fajr prayer!
The above statement is just a simple fact. There are valid reasons for missing fajr prayer if one were to make up the prayer later, but this piece is for those who allow themselves to sleep through the required time to pray fajr.
As many things in Islam go, to wake up for Fajr salat you will have to struggle. Have faith that if you accidently miss prayer you may make it up as soon as possible. But if you keep missing fajr prayer due to carelessness and constant negligence then you are jeopardizing your faith. Even more dangerous is when you become complacent with not waking up and satisfied with just making fajr prayer whenever you happen to wake up.
To train yourself to wake up on time practice these tips (even if you've tried them before and they have not worked. As stated before, it is a struggle and not one that can be abandoned)
1. Alarm Clock!!!
(Set 2 or 3 and don't put the alarm clock by your bed. Try to put it across the room so you will have to get out of bed to turn it off and once out of bed don't go back to bed!!!!)
2. Go to bed early
This will take a few days to adjust your sleep schedule but work it in such a way that you can wake up for fajr and go back to bed and not ruin the amount of sleep you need. To avoid staying up late cramming for an exam/quiz make sure you study earlier!
3. Get someone to wake you up
If you live with other Muslims or at home with a Muslim family ask your brothers/sisters/parents to wake you up. (That is good because if they're Muslim they have to pray too!) Have them dump some water on your face to help you wake up.
4. Du'aa before going to sleep.
Waking up is also a mental thing. On the weekend imagine how you linger in bed, but on a weekday because of school how you get yourself up to get to class on time (i hope!). The point is to make du'aa before you sleep to ask Allah (swa) to help you wake up, it also serves as a mental reminder that when your alarm rings you have to get up and you have to pray!
5. Drink an insane amount of water before going to bed.
Not so much so that your belly is a temporary aquarium. I mean 2-3 glasses full of water. Not only is it extremely healthy to drink lots of water, but come morning hours you'll need to get up for more then just fajr ;-). Insha'allah this won't be the only reason you get up, but as long as it gets you out of bed.
6. Get your adrenaline up.
When your alarm goes off roll out of bed and do some push ups or get up and do some jumping jacks. Once you get some adrenaline in your blood stream, not only will you be able to make fajr salat, but you might stay up and do some homework! (probably not but at least you'll make salat).
