The upcoming Holiday

Asalaam Aleykum!

Hi ALL!!!! I have been away from tti for a few days, getting the family ready for their departure. Finally I am surrounded in peace for a while. The reason for my post is to see what should be done for the holiday and when it is exactly. I know they usually go and kill the lamb (which I can't bare!) and then cook and eat together. I don't really wish to go and eat with his male friends and their wives, which I wasn't invited anyway that I know of.......would it be acceptable for me to cook like a roast or something and prepare a meal for the honor of that day? And what should be done on that day? Since it is close to the traditional christmas season, would it be okay for me to adorn my front yard with sparkly lights? My first holiday as a Muslim and I have no one here to spend it with or make me feel the season. Also, I visited the Mosque in Falls Church yesterday and picked up the local Muslim paper......do muslims really feel as persecuted as that paper made it sound......I felt is very derogative towards America.....I was somewhat insulted but again, I don't know what persecution you may feel. I only know my husband has never felt racism or religious persecution and he has worked with some REAL REDNECKS down here. I am just wondering if the stories are not exaggerated. Thanks everyone in advance for some info.

Uh I dont know if you know or not but as far as I've been told, the upcoming Eid is actually more about giving meat to charity and the rest of the family members then like actually throwing dinner parties. My family usually ordered like diffrent animals like cows and lambs and distributed the meat to charity and diffrent family members. We still had dinners but it wasn't really the big focus.

So the point is, you don't have to stress out about it because as far as I know, its not a day of like getting everyone together to eat, its about like giving back to the poor and stuff.

Well I knew that you are supposed to feed lots of people.....BUT with my husband it has always been them going as a group and slaughtering and cooking and then they all ear and deliver remainder to the mosque........

Cool. The we did was we just distributed the meat proportionally to everyone. We would also set aside a portion for our family to eat it.

I know it is sunnah (tradition of the prophet pbuh) to show joy & happiness and be in a festive mood on the day of Eid. In muslim countries, people usually have new cloth, prepare special food and go visit family members & friends in addition to attending the mosque on the morning of the first Eid day.

I'm not sure about the lights in front of the house ... would it not make it look like you are celebrating Christmas giving the timing of Eid this year ? It maybe disallowed on these grounds.

I'd suggest you try to widen your friends circle so you have people to spend time with. Go to the Mosque and try to meet others. I wonder if any of the sisters on this site would invite you over Eid time to spend some time together. You cant celebrate alone.

any way ... enjoy your break.

Salaam DianeK,

Please read the post on charity and it will give you information on how to send money for the poor for scarifical purposes.
The masjid in Falls Church is wondeful and multicultural. My husband and I used to attend it.
The other question is really a great topic and I think you will receive serious responses if you post it.
Why not get gaudy with the lights. It is our festival and the Prophet loved to smile.
