The virtue of fasting six days of Shawwaal

Fasting six days of Shawwaal after the obligatory fast of Ramadaan is Sunnah Mustahabbah, not waajib. It is recommended for the Muslim to fast six days of Shawwaal, and in this there is great virtue and an immense reward. Whoever fasts these six days will have recorded for him a reward as if he had fasted a whole year, as was reported in a saheeh hadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Abu Ayyoob (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadaan and follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” (Narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawood, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah).

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) explained this when he said:

“Whoever fasts for six days after (Eid) al-Fitr has completed the year: (whoever does a good deed (hasanah) will have ten hasanah like it).” According to another report: “Allaah has made for each hasanah ten like it, so a month is like fasting ten months, and fasting six days completes the year.” (al-Nisaa’i and Ibn Maajah. See also Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1/421).

It was also narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah with the wording: “Fasting for the month of Ramadaan brings the reward of ten like it, and fasting for six days brings the reward of two months, and that is the fasting of the whole year.”

The Hanbali and Shaafa’i fuqaha’ explained that fasting six days of Shawwaal after fasting Ramadaan makes it as if one has fasted for an entire year of obligatory fasts, because the multiplication of the reward applies even to naafil fasts, because each hasanah brings the reward of ten like it.

I feel like doing 3+ months of Nafl Ruzas. I like Ruza. It purifies your heart and soul and makes my Eman Feel Stronger. Actually that's what happens during Ruza, and that's why I love Ruza. I was upset that it was over and when it was Eid, it felt wired eating food during the day.

I'm fasting today and my intention was to fast one of the six days for the month of Shawwal. However, I have not made up for the days I was not able to fast on the month of Ramadhaan yet. Is this valid? I hope someone can help me find a fatwa for this. Jazakallaahu Khayr. Sis aisha1114, may Allaah swt reward you for sharing AMEEN.

I was searching for an answer too but couldnt find it....

If someone missed six days of the ramadan and then fast the six days of shawaal....Does it count as the six days of shawaal and also a make up of the days the person has missed during ramadan?

Or does the person has to fast 6 more other days in order to make up for the days they have missed?

I was taught that if you fast the six days of shawaal it will be a sunnah for you and also a make up for the days you have missed...

Till a sister recently told me i was wrong...?

Anyone has an answer for us...?

Jazaakumullahu kheiran in advance.:)

btw sis aisha jazaakillahu kheiran for the post very beneficial indeed

Jazakallaahu Khayr for your response sis. I'm definitely planning on to making up on my missed Ramadhaan fasts. However, lastnight mom and I decided to intend to fast today for the 6 days of Shawwal. So I dunno if it's ok to intend to fast this first or should I make up the missed fast first before anything else? :( Or is it ok the other way around?

Question:
If a person fasts six days of Shawwaal after Ramadaan when he has not yet completed the Ramadaan fast because he did not fast ten days of Ramadaan for a legitimate reason will he have the same reward as a person who fasted all of Ramadaan and followed it with six days of Shawwaal, i.e. will he be like a person who fasted for a lifetime? Please explain to us, may Allaah reward you with good.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

The precise rewards for the deeds which people do for the sake of Allaah is something which is known only to Allaah. If a person seeks the reward from Allaah and strives to obey Him, his reward will not be lost, as Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“We shall not make the reward of anyone who does his (righteous) deeds in the most perfect manner to be lost.” [al-Kahf 18:30]. If someone has missed some of the days of Ramadaan, he should fast them first, then fast six days of Shawwaal, because he cannot follow the fast of Ramadaan with six days of Shawwaal unless he has completed his Ramadaan fast.

And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions, and grant them peace.

Jazakallaahu Khayr! It's so funny because when I arrived home from work, Khutba already started and as I was brushing my teeth, this was the topic Mashaa'Allaah :D So now since this is clear, this can't be counted as one of the 6..the question now is should I complete my fast today or breakt it as I have found out before iftaar? :(

Jazakillahu kheiran sis Nazihah :) :ma:

It def answered my question:D:D

With regard to fasting the six days of Shawwaal, these are connected to Ramadaan and can only be done after making up missed Ramadaan fasts. If a person fasts these days before making up his missed Ramadaan fasts, he will not get the reward for them, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadaan then follows it with six days of Shawwaal, it will be as if he fasted for a lifetime.” It is known that the one who still has some days to make up is not regarded as having fasted Ramadaan until he makes up those days. Some people think that if they fear Shawwaal is going to end soon and they fast the six days even though they still owe some days from Ramadaan, that this is acceptable. This is a mistake, because these six days cannot be fasted until a person has made up the days that he owes from Ramadaan.

Fasting after Ramadan

Asalaamoalaikum,

Please can someone help as I'm starting to get worried now after reading the above - I did not know that you had to keep the ones you missed during Ramadan first and then the one's in Shawwal. Alhamdulillah I've fasted 6 days after Eid believing that I am keeping the 6 in Shawwal, and planned to keep the 6 that i've missed from tomorrow onwards.

Please can someone clarify whether these six that I have fasted are still valid (even though my niyat was the for the 6 in Shawwal, could they be used as the one's that I missed in Ramadan - I think maybe not) or would I need to keep the ones missed first and then the ones for Shawwal again?

Jazzak Allah Khair for your help.

Asalaamoalaikum.
