US change over Hamas irks Israel
Israel expresses deep concern over a US decision to allow aid to a Palestinian unity government including Hamas which strongly refuses to recognize Israel.
Citing senior Israeli officials, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday Tel Aviv was concerned that the US is thinking over funding a new unity government providing Hamas joins the coalition even without recognizing Israel.
"Israel would be very concerned about any international funding that reaches Hamas," an unnamed official was quoted by the Post as saying.
According to a report published by the L.A Times on Monday, the Obama administration has asked the congress to allow aid to the Palestinian territories in the event Hamas becomes part of a unity government.
"Every step that strengthens Hamas only distances peace. In the event that the report is true, it is painful and worrying," Haaretz quoted another political source as saying.
The controversial report came as the Palestinian factions are holding talks to discuss the formation of a national unity government in the Palestinian territories.
Based on the Israeli media, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planning to raise the matter with President Barack Obama, senior officials in his administration and members of Congress during an upcoming visit to the US.
The US had previously vowed not to deal with or fund any Palestinian government that included Hamas resistance movement.
"We will not deal with or in any way fund a Palestinian government that includes Hamas unless and until Hamas has renounced violence, recognized Israel" said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton last week.
US officials however claimed that based on the new proposal, even if Hamas doesn't meet those criteria, the Obama administration wants to be able to provide aid to a Palestinian unity government--if one is established-even if the government includes Hamas.
The decision is in contrast to initial messages sent to Tel Aviv from Washington notifying that there would be no change in the US policy in the territory, but a change in the language.
