PARENTS have been warned of baby sling risks after the death of a two-day-old infant in South Australia.

The Adelaide baby was found to be cold and had stopped breathing after it was placed in a sling worn underneath his mother’s shirt and jumper.

In a letter to the Medical Journal of Australia, two pathology experts say as tests found no other explanation for the Adelaide baby's death the cause was recorded as undetermined, but the sling was "considered a risk factor".

Authors Roger Byard, professor of pathology at the University of Adelaide, and senior specialist forensic pathologist John Gilbert said it was "important that parents and carers are made aware of potential safety issues with the use of these devices, particularly in very young infants".

Sixteen deaths attributed to the use of slings have occurred in the United States and Canada, resulting in calls for mandatory standards by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.

In 2010, more than 1 million baby slings made by Infantino were recalled in the US after claims linking them to three infant deaths. The Consumer Product Safety Commission urged parents to immediately stop using the slings for babies under 4 months due to concerns babies could suffocate in the soft fabric slings.

"It is well recognised that infants placed in certain positions, such as in car safety seats, may be at risk of significant oxygen desaturation, and even death, due to upper airway compromise," Dr Byard and Dr Gilbert wrote.

"It appears that a similar situation occurs with certain slings, albeit rarely, as the soft and rounded sleeping surfaces may promote a potentially dangerous sleeping posture that impedes normal respiration.

"Constant monitoring of infants in slings is advised to ensure that the infant's head is facing outwards, with no covering of the face."

Helen Noblet, the chief executive officer of Kidsafe SA - the South Australian arm of the Child Accident Prevention Foundation of Australia told The Australian there was "a potential for slings to be dangerous if they are misused".

"It's quite a cottage industry in some cases - people make them at home and sell them at markets," Ms Noblet said.

"Our message is, if they are used incorrectly they could be a hazard."

Infant deaths associated with baby slings.

:salam2:
greeting!

Infant deaths associated with baby slings
Roger W Byard and John D Gilbert

Recently, there has been an increase in the popularity and use of baby slings to transport infants. A sling is a soft fabric carrier, worn around a parent or caregiver’s neck, in which the infant is suspended. Slings are often promoted as a secure and easy way to carry an infant, that maintains close contact with the child.

An issue has arisen concerning the safety of such devices, in that infants may be placed in a position where there is excessive flexion of the neck (chin-to-chest positioning) or obstruction of the mouth and nose that may cause suffocation.

Warnings have recently been issued by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. Sixteen deaths attributed to the use of slings have occurred in the United States and Canada, resulting in calls for mandatory standards by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
We report a South Australian case of a 2-day-old boy, who was placed into a cloth sling worn under his mother’s shirt and jumper and was subsequently noted by his mother to be cold and not breathing. At autopsy, there were no significant abnormalities identified, with no injuries visible on x-ray or physical examination. Results of toxicological, metabolic, virological and bacteriological studies were normal. In the absence of definitive pathological findings, the cause of death was undetermined, although the baby sling was considered a risk factor.

It is well recognised that infants placed in certain positions, such as in car safety seats, may be at risk of significant oxygen desaturation, and even death, due to upper airway compromise. This applies particularly to preterm and low-birthweight infants. It appears that a similar situation occurs with certain slings, albeit rarely, as the soft and rounded sleeping surfaces may promote a potentially dangerous posture that impedes normal respiration. Certain infants may also be quite vulnerable to airway occlusion, with deaths being reported while breastfeeding, for example.

Given the cases of infant death associated with baby slings in North America, and this Australian case, it is important that parents and carers are made aware of potential safety issues with the use of these devices, particularly in very young infants. Constant monitoring of infants in slings is advised, to ensure that the infant’s head is facing outwards, with no covering of the face.

Islam is a way of life
I see people using those everyday. And im like....that does NOT look safe at all. :/
Some women are too busy chatting on the phone and shopping for clothes they dont feel like HOLDING their baby secure in their arms, so they use this thing.

Very upsetting, this death was preventable!

I personally don't think that its the sling in and of itself that is the problem. I used a sling (not this one) with my son Connor and the directions EXPLICITLY state NOT to put clothes OVER the sling and to always have one arm on the child at all times to prevent falls and to stabilize the sling.

Slings have been used for eons in the east and in Africa and I found it so peaceful to have my child so close to me that our hearts could be felt. He always loved it as well since he could be near mommy yet look around. He could hear my voice through his skin and close enough to see my lips moving.

We loved it!

Waalaykum assalaam wa rahmatullah,

JazakAllahu khayr. Some people avoid it and instead prefer a baby tram which is much safer and convinient option. I personally feel trams are better as when infants require more rest and sleep. But alas sometimes I do see kids in uncomfortable situation when their parent are driving or shopping with slings, and continuosly manouvering the baby, and bearing inconviniencies.

A baby is like to handle a fragile object
and more precious than anything that is around.
so be well aware and be extra cautious!

Thank you for passing by,

I'm not what you believe
:salam2:
the infant can die in every moment and it's needed to be always attentive, but about the sling, well I used it with all my 4 children and it never happened.children can also die while sleeping in their beds, but nobody maybe knows that the child has a survivance-instinct and it's natural for him to breath and when he "forgets"to do it many times he makes a movement with the head and he breaths normally.and if a child dies because of the milk which comes up to the throat,it's due to the fact that the mother didn't hit his son on his back to make the air coming out the mouth.I say this by personal experience,I'm so attentive with my children that nothing can happen, except if Allah doesn't want it.

I used a mobywrap and then eventually an Ergo. The unsafe part of this is the mother used it absolutely incorrectly. To say slings are dangerous because of this story is like saying strollers are unsafe because some mother placed a blanket over her child's face while in a stroller. It's not the wrap that is unsafe but the incorrect usage of it. Slings have been used much longer than prams and are actually better for a baby.

Babies often have apnea spells in infancy (times of arrested breathing) and the mother acts as a pace maker. Research has shown that babies who are "worn" in a sling or wrap have more regular breathing patterns and less apnea episodes. Arms are great to carry babies but if I didn't use my wrap I would have never been able to function inside the house for the first few months, I have no one to help me and my DH works long hours and sometimes overnight.

Please educate yourselves on baby slings, wraps and carriers before assuming that they are unsafe. They are not, rather they are better for the baby than strollers, prams or keeping babies in car seats in the home.
