Were the Parents of our Rasool SAW believers?

Someone told me recently that the parents of Our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam were disbelievers and briefly mentioned a hadith where Muhammad (SAW) is asked by one of his companions, is my father in heaven? where our Rasool SAW replies No, your father and mine are both in the hellfire. I asked and he said maybe he received word about Ibrahim AlayhisSalaam and he refused? does anyone know?? thank you

From what I have read when I was investigating Islam it said that Prophet's (SAW) father died before he was even born and his mother died when he (SAW) was a very young age. Since the Quresh were non believers until Prophet Muhammed (SAW) I would assume that his parents were non believers but that is my own assumption and I have no proof so may Allah forgive me if I am speaking out of turn. Inshallah someone else might have proof.

I don't understand why anyone would waste time indulging in knowledge that doesn't benefit their Aakhirah in any way, I consider this thread topic to be of that category.

Anas bin Malik and Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Messenger of Allaah would say:

اللهم إني أعوذ بك من علم لا ينفع ومن قلب لا يخشع ومن دعاء لا يسمع ومن نفس لا تشبع

ِAllaahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'ilmin la yanfa' wa min qalbin ya yakhsha' wa min du'a'in la yusma' wa min nafsin la tashba'​

"O Allaah! I seek refuge with You from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart that is not subdued and humble, and from a supplication that is not heard, and from a self that is not satisfied."

And he would then say: "O Allaah! I seek refuge with You from these four things."

[Reported by an-Nasa'i (5470, 5536 & 5537) and Abu Dawud (1548), and it is saheeh]

Please dont be sorry for asking questions brother. Ever since I began investigating Islam more than 3 years ago I have been told that "no question is too silly to ask" and "asking questions is how we learn". It is encouraged in Islam to seek knowledge and even if someone else might think your questions are silly or random you just keep asking them because thats how we learn about Islam! May Allah keep us all on the straight path and guide us all toward patience! Ameen :tti_sister:

It was narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that his parents are in Hell. Muslim (203) narrated that a man said: “O Messenger of Allaah, where is my father?’ He said: “In Hell.” When the man turned away, he called him back and said: “My father and your father are in Hell.”

With regard to his mother he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I asked my Lord for permission to pray for forgiveness for my mother, and He did not give me permission. I asked him for permission to visit her grave, and He gave me permission.” Narrated by Muslim, 976.

Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, commenting on the first hadeeth:

This indicates that whoever died during the fatrah (interval between two Prophets) following the way of the Arabs at that time, namely idol-worship, is among the people of Hell. We cannot say that the message did not reach these people, because the message of Ibraaheem and other Prophets had reached these people.

However some scholars have tried to defend the parents of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and say that they will be saved from Hell, and that Allaah brought them back to life after they had died, and they became Muslim and believed in the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), then they died like that (as Muslims). They quoted as evidence for this mawdoo’ (fabricated) and da’eef jiddan (very weak) ahaadeeth which cannot be regarded as evidence.

The scholars refuted this idea.

Al-‘Azeemabaadi said:

Everything that has been narrated concerning the parents of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) being brought back to life and believing and being saved is mostly fabrications and lies, and some of it is da’eef jiddan (very weak) and is not saheeh at all, according to the consensus of the leading hadeeth scholars who judged it to be mawdoo’ (fabricated) and da’eef (weak), such as al-Daaraqutni, al-Jawzaqaani, Ibn Shaheen, al-Khateeb, Ibn ‘Asaakir, Ibn Naasir, Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Suhayli, al-Qurtubi and others. ‘Awn al-Ma’bood, 12/494. See also Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 4/324
