Can you be more specific? you are referring to whom as "unbelievers" ?
Ofcourse if you refer to anybody who is not a muslim, then its all the way to Hell, astagfirullahi aliyul azeem, May Allah save us from its torment. Islam is the base of MONOTHEISM. Its fundamentals are based on TAWHEED. It does not matter whether you want to accept it or not, whether you like it or not but thats the truth.
ALL MUSLIMS ARE MONOTHEISTS or FOLLOWERS OF TAWHEED and ALL MONOTHEISTS ARE MUSLIMS. If you call christians, jews or people of any other religion as monotheists then you are wrong because they are not.

The Muslim belief concerning the destiny of non-Muslim monotheists in the Hereafter

Your interest in studying Islam is something great, which we appreciate. Everyone should seek the truth wherever it may be, and follow it even if it differs from the way of their forefathers or the religion of the country or society in which they live, because salvation from the Fire of Hell on the Day of Judgement is more important than anything else.

One of the most important things that the would-be student of Islam should do is to consult authentic Islamic references, in order to understand the reality of this religion. For example, one should consult translations of the meanings of the Qur’an and the ahaadeeth (sayings) of the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad (peace be upon him), ensuring that the translations are sound. But reading books written by non-Muslims, or by Muslims who do not really understand or practice their religion, is not a scholarly approach or a sound method of finding out the truth.

Returning to your question, what do Muslims believe will happen to atheists? Or for that matter, what about monotheists who are not Muslim? Will their fate be Hell in the Hereafter? The answer is that Allaah has clearly created everything, sent His blessings on His creation, and sent Messengers and Revealed Books to tell them that whoever believes in and worships Him alone, not associating any partner with Him, will enter Paradise, and whoever denies Him, or worships something else besides Him, or takes other gods instead of Him, or says that He has a wife or son, or that the angels are His daughters, or follows a law other than that which He revealed to judge between people in truth, or turns away from His religion, will be doomed in the Hereafter to the eternal punishment of Hell. This is exact justice, and this will be the fate deserved by the one who did not give his Creator His due.

Worshipping Allaah, obeying His commands and adhering to His prohibitions are basic matters, but they form the essence of the relationship between the Creator and His creation. Allah says:
"And I (Allaah) created not the jinns and men except they should worship Me (alone)." [al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]

Messengers were sent with one message: to tell their people "Worship Allaah, for you have no god besides Him."

Hence we may understand just how far short the person falls who believes that Allaah is one and does not associate anything with Him, but does not worship or obey Him, but rebels against Him and fails to follow His religion or Law, or the Revelation and Messengers which He sent for him and people like him. Does such a person deserve to enter Paradise or Hell?

This is the person who says: "I believe that there is One God Who created the universe, but I am going to stop there; I will not pray to Him or fast or perform Hajj or pay zakaat as He commanded. I am not going to carry out any duties towards Him; I will follow my own desires and do whatever I want, whether He permitted it or forbade it." Can such a person attain salvation on the Day of Judgement?

Allaah sent Messengers to every nation, that they might worship Him and shun false deities. The last nation is this ummah, and the last Messenger is Muhammad (peace be upon him). Allaah sent him for the whole of mankind, the entire world, and thus abrogated the previous laws and made this religion the best and most perfect and complete. Hence it is obligatory for everyone to enter this religion, for Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
"And whoever seeks a religion other than Islaam, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers." [Aal ‘Imraan 3:85]

On this basis, the fate of one who says "I believe in the idea of One God, but I do not want to be a Muslim, or I do not want to follow the last Revelation or the last Prophet," is clear.

Furthermore, the fate of an atheist, who rejects even the belief in God, is even clearer and more evident.

Finally, I hope that the matter is now clearer to you. I ask Allaah to guide us all to the truth and help us to follow it, for He is the best Supporter and Helper.

Well, I abhor it.

As Far AS I Know The Cristians Who Lived Before Romans Took Over The Catholic Church. they Followed One God and No Trinity was there will be the one to go to Heaven . but after that they had Trinity Added into it then so the one who Associate Partners will be gone to Hell.

Even the Jews. one of the Groups of the Early Jews will go to Heaven . and the Rest will go to Hell. Beacuse the Rest Curropted the Religion.

the Same For Muslims , the One Who Associate Partners to Him or will follow thier Lust and Ignore Islam. will be send to hell. Unlike Cristianity In Islam The First People Will be the Immams and Religious Leaders Who were Hypocrate and Sinfull ,

Where as In Cristianity says that all will go to Heaven and who is not Criastians will be for Hell. and the Priest will be higher than all.

Well, I abhor it.

Do you abhor the truth? Why is it when people hear something that they do not like they try to put other people down. Have you heard the saying the truth will set you free?

Ok Muslims believe non-muslims are destined for hell, should we change our belief because people will abhor it?

Show me one Christian who believes a Muslim will go to Paradise when they die. Why does it become a problem when Muslims express their beliefs. My own mother believes I am destined for hell because i chose Islam.

That is our belief take it or leave it. I am not asking you to like it or even agree with it but that is just what we believe.

You claim you are on this site to learn but it seems like you are here to defend your beliefs and Allah knows best your intentions, if a person is learning i do not see how you can then argue with your 'teacher' yet you do not know anything about that particular subject.

We are not here to make you feel good in your disbelief but to convey the true meaning of Islam inshallah.

Actually you'd be hard-pressed to find a modern day open Christian(the people worthy of the name) that seriously believes that believing Muslims will go to hell.

If such is the case than it would seem that Judaism is the only religion that believe that you don't have to follow itself to be seen as fit in God's eyes, but that following the Noahide laws(no idols, no murder, no theft, no promiscuity, no blasphemy, no cruelty to animals, and to have just laws) is what counts.

Fine I got my answer. Thank you to everyone that went to the trouble to answer it.

P.S: 'I abhor it' I'm not going to explain, but I didn't necessarily mean Islam.

Dear fabs assalmaulaikum (may there be peace on you). First of all allow me to thank you for asking about Islam. Regarding the fate of non believers in the hereafter; the islamic faith is quite clear. If the message of Islam reached them or was accessible then there is no excuse on their part for not accepting the truth. However some would argue about those people who had no access to islam at all. For instance the red indians before the advent of the so called civilization to the american continent. For such people the criteria is much easier. All they have to do is renounce all other Gods but the One and Only God. Such was the example of for instance a person called Zaid who died before the Prophet SAW had recieved the message. However Zaid, during his life time would renounce all Gods and all Idols, worshiping only the All Mighty. He did not know the best way of worshiping Allah, but he tried. The Prophet SAW after recieving the message of prophethood was asked about Zaid's fate and others like him who had believed only in Allah. Through divine guidance the Prophet SAW, subsequently replied that Zaid would be raised on the Day of Judgement as a nation in himself, not being part of a any messenger's nation, but still righteous.

It would probably be relevant at this stage to give reference of a hadith (the Prophet's SAW sayings) in which he said that my religion is for everyone in all places; those who are black, white, wheatish or red. The red indians had not been discovered by the rest of the world in those times. Thank you once again for asking about my religion. I do hope I have answered your querry.

AssalaamuAlaikum,
Brother,

I must suggest you to keep your temper down and remain calm. You must remember the history of Khalid bin Waleed and Umer Farooq (Rizwaanullahi Alaihim Ajmaeen). There were many people who were ignorant and violent against Islam, until they came to understand Islam and were blessed by Allah.

Keep in mind, if Allah SWT would decide about you to remain stupid, ignorant and Islam-hating creature then you would have no way to come to know the truth and would not be saved from hell.
So if we are blessed Alhamdulillah, then it is our duty to wisely invite the people towards the right path which Allah SWT has shown us.

God spoke to mankind in the Torah, the Nevi'im and the Ketuvim. I don't recognize him here.

Muslims believe nonbelievers will go to hell, it abhors you, right. In fact Muslims do NOT believe that all Muslims will go to paradise while nonbelievers to hell. We Muslims fear Allah that we are destined to the hell if our deeds are not good. Even a muslim can also go to hell. And this is a very big difference with Christianity and Judaism where they claim that all christians will go to paradise.

A Christian goes to the priest in church, confesses and priest forgives him on the behalf of the God the Almighty? Who the hell is that priest to forgive the people if God himself did not decide about the person? Being a Muslim I can belive if I ask for fogiveness and true repentance from sins I will be forgiven, but who knows that Allah has forgiven me yet or still wants me to do more or cry for forgiveness or pay some penalty ? I will only come to know about my destiny at Judgement day.

Its the relation of fear of going to hell but at the same time the feeling of hope that our Lord Almighty is merciful. Yet I dont know my destiny and cant claim that I will go to paradise. There might be some of my good deed that my Lord will like and will wipe out my all sins or there might be some sin which I did not even realize to be sin but I commited and I am destined to hell. Who knows? After all I am human and my God knows better than me and he is better judge. I give an example. What if you threw a skin of banana on the road and went away. Someone came, slipped on the banana and got killed of head injury. Your only fault was that you threw some trash at road? yet who is responsible for the murder? So I cant guarantee that I just did those sins what I know. There are many sins which I dont even know but I commited.

Now about your strange abhor feelings for nonbelivers going to hell:

You love your mother and father, right? what if I say somebody other than your father, slept with your mother? Will you feel it outrageous abuse?
In this sense, I am associating a man as your mother's partner, and its an abuse.
Then how about that tiny negligible creature who is associating the things to LORD that He has begotten someone? Associating this thing to the LORD OF UNIVERSE, The Creator, The KING OF KINGS, The ONE GOD ?????
It is much bigger abuse than the abuse someone would commit about your mother.

Who the hell is negligible sperm-made creation to abuse the KING of the kings?

And one more perspective which you might have not given a thought about:

If you create some working Robot, but then you break it or melt it. The robot was yours, But can anybody object or blame you why did you break 'your' robot? You will simply be angry and feel offended and will ask the objecting person why is he interfering and objecting on your own property.

If God is the giver of life, the giver of breathing, body, pain, leisure. If he is the owner of creation, then how is it illogical and unjust to put the creation to the hell without any reason??? Can anybody object? Can anybody do any harm to the Creator for doing this?

Yet our God does not put anyone to the hell without any reason even he can rightly do that so.

We are in no means deserving the paradise but by the Generosity and Blessings of Allah SWT. Praise and Glory be to Him.

Thanks once again for your time and your patience.
Bye.

You will see [by reading the posts found in the above links] on what basis we Muslims believe that people who die as non Muslims -who received the message of Islam in a clear and undistorted way- will enter Hell to abide therein forever.

Abdur-Raheem Green tried to explain it to non Muslims in the following post on his blog:

As salam alaykum!

Hi Brother Green!

I've got a question from a non-muslim who is interested in Islam. Can you please answer his question. If you could please spare a few minutes, jazakallah khair.

His mail to me as follows:

Regarding Islam and the day of judgement and the afterlife, I read with interest in the "Brief Illustrated Guide to Understanding Islam" pages 50 & 51 that in short, anyone not a Muslim or not believing that there is no true God but God, will lose Paradise forever and will be sent to Hellfire.

This I find somewhat radical when we consider people of other faiths have devoted their lives to the study, worship and practice of their respective religions. They have lived their lives by similar principles to Islam of good over evil and the ultimate respect for life and the wonders of this earth e.g. Mother Teresa of Calcutta who spent her life devoted to working and assisting the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. She was not a Muslim but a Christian. She lived her life by the grace of others, in poverty as a missionary devoted to helping others. By my literal reading from the extract quoted in the Qur'an 3.85 (And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted from him and he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter.), we can therefore conclude that Mother Teresa seems to have been doomed to hellfire for not being a Muslim, irrespective of all the good she has done while on this earth and the sacrifice and pain she endured. This I find harsh and hard to believe.

Furthermore, if we take say the population of China being around 1.3Billion, and the respective religions found therein (Confucianism, Buddhism, Taoism), am I to believe that they are all doomed to hell. If so, why did God not send another prophet to China, Japan etc to relay the word of God with their own respective "copy" of the holy book?

Apologies if the above comes across somewhat intense. In my little understanding of Islam, I just seem to find it somewhat inflexible to other faiths. God, as we read in the various scriptures and holy books available, is all wise, all caring, all compassionate..... I therefore feel that compassion should extend outwith the realm of Islam irrespective of one's own faith, colour or believes, as long as we live honourably respecting each other, God and life itself.

I would be very interested to hear your views to this regard.

Many thanks and best wishes
Geoff

Dear Geoff,
Thank you asking these questions and raising these issues. I’m happy to able to try and clarify these matters for you. As a Muslim, or someone who has surrendered his will to the will of God, we can only answer truthfully and explain to you what God has taught us. He knows himself the best. He decides what do with His creatures, whom to punish and whom to forgive and reward. This is of course what the religion of Islam is based upon. God is all Knowing and Most Wise and He has revealed from His perfect knowledge guidance for us.

I think that the purpose of the booklet, although far from comprehensive, is to illuminate some reasons why Muslims are convinced, and also to indicate to others how they can be convinced that Islam and the Quran is from God. Once one is convinced of that, then one needs to understand that what is contained in the Quran is guidance from the Creator about how we should live our lives, and what are the benefits that we get from doing that and what are the consequences for those who fail to do that. Once one has realised this fact, then there is nothing left for an intelligent person except to follow Gods’ guidance and wisdom.
I think your first question can be answered very easily. In fact I’m sure you could answer it yourself!
Similar does not mean the same. In fact one simple, yet fundamental matter, can make a huge difference. You might take the example of two soldiers. Both carry guns, both shoot people, both wear uniforms, both march and call the commander of their unit sergeant., but one belongs to an army that is invading, with the intent to conquer and plunder and in the process massacres civilians, the other is defending his land and fights only those that fight him. Surely that simple difference is in fact fundamental, and makes the two soldiers quite unlike each other!

At the deepest level, the very basis of everything that one does are one’s beliefs. It is what we believe that fundamentally dictates what we do and how we behave and in fact how we judge others and ultimately how we are judged by God. In Islam it is what we believe rather than what we do that is at the heart of everything. If our beliefs are wrong and corrupt, they make everything wrong and corrupt. If the intentions that drive the person are evil and the cause is evil then the “good” we do can even reach the stage of “working to promote evil”.

Let us take your example. It may seem that Mother Teresa of Calcutta, or many other Christians, Jews, Sikhs and Hindus share common values and practices and attitudes to Muslims, and of course they do. In the case of Mother Teresa we should have no doubt that her life was spent propagating, calling to, and trying to convert people to the Catholic faith. This was the basis of her work, not the grace of others as you have claimed. She took people who were dying on the street with the express purpose and intent of “saving their souls” and bringing them to Christianity before they died. You may wonder what is wrong with that. What is wrong is the basis.

The Quran makes it clear that what God wants from us is that we recognise Him and obey His commands. A person who knowingly turns away from this rejects God and has no right to claim His Mercy and Reward. A person who chooses to insult and disobey God can, and should, expect nothing except His punishment.

Let us give some simple analogies.

You have a business and employ a person paying them a good salary to do a simple job. Then you discover this person is in fact taking your money and all the while was working for someone else during the hours they should have been working for you. There is no doubt that this is a great type of wrong from that employed person, who deserves nothing except disgrace. This is the example of those who worship others along with God, although they should worship Him alone, and He alone is worthy of it. This includes, for example, worshipping Jesus. Islam teaches, and we believe all the Prophets, including Jesus himself taught that we should worship only God. To worship something along with God is in fact the greatest sin a person can commit as far a God is concerned. To claim that some human, that breaths God’s air and eats His food and who is just a small creature, on a tiny planet in a universe that is in fact itself no more than a spec compared to God’s Throne is in fact the same as and equal to God, is not only an absurdity but in fact it the gravest of insults and the greatest of injustices!

Or take another example. You employ a person to do some specific work, say to paint your house white, and they paint it red. When you ask “Why did you do that?, the person replies that they thought it was better. Does this person deserve reward or punishment? This is the example of a person who worships only God, but thinks they can do it in anyway they please, and imagines they don’t have to follow Gods commands.

Take another example. You as the boss and manager of growing company decide that the firm is need of new directives for its continued smooth running. So you send out new directives essential for the smooth future running of the company, but half the employees purposefully and continually ignore these directives and continue along the old pattern. Are such employees of any use to you? This is example of those who reject Prophet Mohammed and the guidance given to him by God, claiming they are following the previous message.

Let is take one final example.

You have in your business a voluntary pension scheme. So your employees can invest a small sum throughout their working life and reap huge returns when they retire, or they can keep the money, but have then they can have no claim to the pension.

This is the example who good deeds purely for Allah’s pleasure, seeking reward in the afterlife. They sacrifice a little in this life and reap the rewards in the next. As for those who refused the scheme are like those who worshipped Allah alone in the right way, but looked only for worldly benefit. So that is all they got. What right do they have to claim or expect more?

Is any of this really radical or harsh?

It is incidental as to how charming and polite and friendly and helpful such individuals were to those around them. In fact in many ways if they are like that it makes their crime even more appalling. In fact this very mannerism may encourage others to follow their example in disregarding the manager’s directives, doing the wrong work and not investing in the pension scheme. This is what I mean that their “goodness” can in fact become a call to evil.

Recently my parents agreed to let a friend of theirs do some building work for them. They even paid him above the going rate. He had many of the characteristics I just mentioned. He then swindled my parents, did a shoddy job, used rotten wood, and much of the work in fact had to be redone by someone else. Would it be “radical” or harsh to take this man to court, for him to be fined or put in jail?

I think, therefore, that there is nothing “radical” or harsh about what the Quran teaches at all. In fact it makes perfect sense. What is radical is thinking that a person can do what they like, insult and reject God and His guidance and oppose His Messengers and none of that matters just as long as they are “nice” to others? To treat such people in the same way as those who have truly obeyed God, accepted His Messenger and tried to follow His commands, now that would be unfair and unjust.

This brings us onto the matter of God’s justice. They maybe many people in the world to whom God’s message has not yet reached, and Allah does not punish a people until He has sent them a Messenger. No one goes to Hell by mistake. People go there because they chose to take that path, and rejected the path to Paradise. This is what is meant by:

“…whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will not be accepted from him and he will be one of the losers in the Hereafter

Allah’s Message comes to people when and where He wills, according to His knowledge and wisdom. For those who have not received it then Allah will judge them justly.

At the end of the day we cannot make any judgements upon individuals. God alone knows the inner condition of the hearts. We can only go on what is apparent to us. Islam means willing submission to God and that is the way of living that Allah has revealed from His wisdom and Knowledge. How could any right minded person seek to live according to anything else?

Yours truly,
Abdurraheem Green
