:salam2:

often we say that we should ask forgiveness for our past sins and try to live according to quran and sunna

this question is not about converts, but about people who have been neglecting religion at a point of their life, and want to clean themselves and start a new life almost like a baby

because sometimes there are many things we forget, like one has debts and he she doesn't know and he still is collecting bad deeds, the counter for bad deeds never stopped
or someone who forgot to catch up prayers or to ask forgiveness to a person he she might have hurt etc...

so which are the points i have to check and mark as ok to be sure that tomorrow morning i can "start" a new day with bad and good deeds but beeing clean of the past

it is a very important question for me
can you imagine, you try to live your live the best and you didn't even know that these things of the past recquire a specific action and that your counter of bad deeds have been increasing and increasing without you knowing it

Assalaamu alaikum warahmatullaah,

I think there's no formula or whatever in starting a new Muslim life. You just really have to move on and do your best in refraining from the mistakes you've done in the past and ask Allaah subhanahu wa ta'ala for His forgiveness.

The article below might be of help to you too Inshaa'Allaah!

How to serve Islam
From www.islam-qa.com

Question:
I want to serve my religion, what should I do?

Answer:
Praise be to Allaah.

1 – You can serve Islam by having a correct resolve and sincere intention, for Allaah blesses an action that is done sincerely for His sake alone, even if it is little. Sincere devotion, if it becomes a constant feature of acts of worship and obedience, even if they are small or simple in the sight of the one who does them, makes them great in the sight of Allaah, so Allaah will forgive him for major sins because of that, as it says in the hadeeth about the piece of paper on which is written La ilaaha ill-Allaah.

2 – You can serve Islam by knowing the right way and following it. The Straight Path means following the way of our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with regard to the principles, ways and means of da’wah and being patient in adhering to that, whilst treating people with kindness and compassion, because they are suffering from the disease of sin.

3 – You can serve Islam by making the most of all available means and circumstances. This is a great blessing, for all means are permissible except those which have been forbidden by Allaah. So we call people to Allaah by all means prescribed in sharee’ah, whilst paying attention to the evidence of sharee’ah and correct etiquette.

4 – You can serve Islam by giving precedence to that which is in the interests of Islam over your own whims and desires. Serving this religion means giving what is most precious of your money, effort, time, thought, etc. Have you not seen those who love sport (football or soccer) for example, how they devote their efforts, time and money to their beloved sport? But more is expected of you than that.

5 – You can serve Islam by following in the footsteps of the scholars, daa’iyahs and reformers, having patience as your companion and putting up with tiredness and exhaustion. For you are doing a great act of worship which is the mission of the Prophets and Messengers and those who follow in their footsteps.

6 – You can serve Islam by shunning laziness, weakness and apathy, for this religion is the religion of resolve, ambition and courage, and its call is only harmed by laziness or reckless ignorance.

7 – You can serve Islam by connecting your heart to Allaah and reciting a lot of du’aa’ and prayers for forgiveness, and persisting in reading Qur’aan. There is nothing that is more effective in cleansing the heart and refreshing the soul, and making it active and energetic so that it will not get tired or bored, than remembering Allaah much and drawing nearer to Him by means of obeying Him and doing naafil (supererogatory) acts of worship.

8 – You can serve Islam by forming bonds with scholars who practise what they preach, those who are known to be sincere and who are well established in jihad and supporting this religion. Marching under their banner and following their lead is very good and beneficial.

9 – You can serve Islam by organizing your time on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. There are actions which should be done every day, others which should be done every week, and others which should be done every month or every year.

For example, you should make da’wah to those whom you see every day and to those whom you see once a week. You may have a family gathering once a month, and there may be annual conferences, or journeys for Hajj or ‘Umrah once a year, and so on.

10 – You can serve Islam by paying it some attention and giving it some of your time, thoughts and money, and making it your main concern. So when you stand up, it is for Islam; when you walk, it is for Islam; when you think, it is for Islam; when you give, it is for Islam; when you sit, it is for Islam.

11 – you can serve Islam by hastening to contribute every time you find an opportunity to do good. Do not hesitate or delay or put it off.

As salamu alikum wa rahmatullahi wabrakatuhu sister

Everybody commits mistakes, sins in their lives. That is why we are believers, because we repent. Its not easy to reach the level of Ehsan so easy. The path is hard.

May Allaah help you, relieve your distress, guide your footsteps and forgive your sin. Your soul is still in your body, your heart is still beating and your mind is still thinking.

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah accepts the repentance of His slaves so long as the death rattle has not reached his throat.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3537); classed as hasan by al-Albaani.

You are not too weak and you are not a pile of dust like those who are in the graves, rather you still have the strength to start again, and Insha Allah you are stronger than you think. The strong person is not the one who never falls, rather the strong person is the one who can get up again if he falls.

There is a difference between the one who falls into a ditch and gives in to the fall, and laments his luck, blames fate and thinks badly of his Lord, and one who falls and knows that he deserved it because of his sin and bad deeds, and because he chose that for himself. “And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves” [al-Anfaal 8:51].

So he gets up after stumbling, and seeks the help of his Lord in ridding himself of sin first of all, then relieving his distress, as he learns to say every day: “You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything)” [al-Faatihah 1:5]. Such is the strong believer whom Allah loves. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say ‘If only I had done (such and such), the such and such would have happened,’ rather say: ‘Allah has decreed and what He wills He does,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of the shaytaan.”

Narrated by Muslim (2664).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Man is not commanded to refer to the concept of the divine decree with regard to the deeds that are enjoined upon him, rather he should refer to the concept of the divine decree with regard to calamities that he has no means to ward off. Whatever befalls you as the result of other people’s actions or otherwise, bear it with patience, accept it and submit. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“No calamity befalls, but by the Leave [i.e. Decision and Qadar (Divine Preordainments)] of Allaah, and whosoever believes in Allaah, He guides his heart [to the true Faith with certainty, i.e. what has befallen him was already written for him by Allaah from the Qadar (Divine Preordainments)]”

[al-Taghaabun 64:11]

Tests and trials are an inevitable part of man’s existence in this life.

“Verily, We have created man from Nutfah (drops) of mixed semen (sexual discharge of man and woman), in order to try him, so We made him hearer and seer”

[al-Insaan 76:2]

People are like metals. Some are pure gold, some are a mixture, and some are less than that. The test is like a fire which will show whether the gold is truly gold or not.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Alif‑Laam‑Meem.

[These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur’aan, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings.]

2. Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: ‘We believe’ and will not be tested.

3. And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allah will certainly make (it) known (the truth of) those who are true, and will certainly make (it) known (the falsehood of) those who are liars, (although Allaah knows all that before putting them to test)”

[al-‘Ankaboot 29:1-3]

The solution is to turn back to Him, and He will love you when you turn back to Him:

“Allaah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves”

[al-Baqarah 2:222]

He will grant you relief when you come back to Him, no matter how far astray you have gone.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, says: ‘I am as My slave thinks I am, and I am with him when he remembers Me. If he remembers me to himself, I remember him to Myself; if he remembers Me in a gathering, I remember him in a gathering better than it; if he draws near to Me a handspan, I draw near to him an arm’s length; if he draws near to me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length; if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.” Narrated by Muslim (2675).

It was narrated from Abu Taweel Shatab al-Mamdood that he came to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and said: “What do you think if a man has committed all kinds of sins, and has not left out any of them, and he did not omit any minor or major sin but he did it, can he repent?”

He said: “Have you become Muslim?”

He said: “As for me, I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah alone, with no partner or associate, and that you are the Messenger of Allaah.”

He said: “Do good deeds and abstain from bad deeds, and Allaah will make them all good deeds for you.”

He said: “Even my betrayals and immoral deeds?”

He said: “Yes.”

He said: “Allaah is most great,” and he kept saying takbeer until he left.

Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer (7/314); classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb.

Allah says:

“Say: O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” [Sûrah al-Zumar: 53]

This verse speaks about those who repent. It tells us that any sin, no matter how major, is expiated by sincere and proper repentance.

There are conditions for repentance to be sincere and proper. The first of these is that the penitent person desists from the sinful act. The second is that he feels deep and genuine regret for having committed the sin. The third is that he resolves in his heart never to return to the sin again. Finally, if the sin caused a transgression against the rights of another person, he needs to do his best to make amends.

When Allah sees this sincere repentance from one of His servants – a servant who truly turns to his Lord in fear and hope – He not only forgives the sin, but replaces those sins for good deeds to the servant’s credit. This is from Allah’s infinite grace and munificence.

Allah says:

“Unless he repents, believes, and works righteous deeds, for Allah will change the evil of such persons into good, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful,” [Sûrah al-Furqân: 70]

Allah says this right after mentioning the sins of polytheism, murder, and adultery. However, this blessing is only for one who have faith, whose repentance is sincere, and who strives to work righteous deeds.

Allah’s generosity is so far-reaching, that we are not only forgiven through our specific repentance for each sin that we commit, but we can attain forgiveness simply through our constant appeals Allah to forgive us.

Another way that we attain Allah’s forgiveness is through the performance of good deeds. Allah says:

“Establish worship at the two ends of the day and in some watches of the night. Lo! Good deeds annul evil deeds. This is reminder for the mindful.” [Sûrah Hûd: 114]

Some scholars are of the view that his verse is only speaking about the forgiveness of minor sins, and that major sins need specific repentance. They cite the following verse in support of this interpretation:

Allah says

“If you shun the most heinous sins which you are forbidden, We will do away with your small sins and admit you to a gate of great honor.” [Sûrah al-Nisâ’: 31]

They also cite a number of hadîth, including the hadîth related by `Uthman that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Any Muslim who offers the prescribed prayer, doing justice to its motions and to the humility that it requires, it will expiate for the sins that preceded it, as long as the person did not commit a major sin.” [Sahîh Muslim]

However, Ibn Taymiyah and a number of other scholars consider the verse “Good deeds annul evil deeds” to be general in meaning. It applies to all sins, major and minor. Even if a person’s good deeds do not expiate for the sin directly, there can be no doubt that those good deeds weigh in the balance of deeds on the Day of Judgment in a person’s favor. Whoever has his good days outweigh his evil deeds on that Day will attain salvation.

Allah says:

“The balance that day will be true: those whose scale (of good) will be heavy will prosper, and as for those whose measure (of good deeds) is light, their souls will be in perdition, for that they wrongfully treated Our signs.” [Sûrah al-A`râf: 8-9]

Ibn Mas`ûd said: “People will be take into account on the Day of Judgment. Whoever has a single sin to his account more than his good deeds will enter the Fire. Whoever has a single good deed to his account greater than his sinful deeds will enter Paradise.”

Then Ibn Mas`ûd recited Allah’s words: “…those whose scale (of good) will be heavy, will prosper”.

Then he said: “Indeed, the balance will weigh an atom’s weight one way or another.”

Allah also forgives us our sins through the difficulties that we face in life. When we are stricken with illness or suffer from circumstances, we will earn forgiveness if we bear them patiently seeking Allah’s reward.

Allah forgives our sins on account of the supplications that others make to Allah asking for our forgiveness, including our funeral prayers. We earn forgiveness through the charity we gave in our lives that continue to provide benefit to others after our deaths. We earn forgiveness if we have pious children who beseech Allah on our behalf.

A Muslim’s sins are likewise forgiven through the punishment he may receive in the grave. Those sins are also forgiven by the intercession that the Prophet (peace be upon him) will make on that day, and then by the intercession those who are granted intercession. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“My intercession is for those who committed major sins from among my followers.”

Above and beyond all of this is the mercy of the Most-Merciful Lord who pardons on that Day all sins as He pleases, as long as the person meets Him worshipping Him alone without ascribing to Him any partner.

Mirajmom
Salaam,

Brother you asked a profound question and my brothers have given you solid answers.
I can only humbly reply that one of the attributes of Allah subhana talla is that He is the Forgiver. Once we ask for His Forgiveness we must bear in mind that we need not ask again. We need to hold on to this very firmly. This is an important aspect of faith. We must believe that He has forgive us. Thus we start each moment anew. Each prayer enables us to strenghten our relationship with Allah subhana talla. So bathe in the river of forgiveness: prayer and move on.

I am glad you posted this Mirajmom - I was actually thinking about this question myself - how many times (or how long) must we ask for forgiveness for the sins we committ (both known and unknown)? Usually, I add to my dua'as every day to ask Allah to forgive my sins and figure that covers me, but I always wondered.

My theory was to sincerely ask for forgiveness once (per prayer) and move on, because I figured, If I wronged another person, the most I can do is sincerely apologize and ask for forgiveness once (either they forgive me or they don't, but I can't keep asking over and over). Surely, Allah, the oft forgiving, only needs to be sincerely asked one time to forgive (notice, I have been saying SINCERELY ask for forgiveness, of course).

Thanks for your advance clearing-up of a question I didn't think to post.

AWW. mashallah a beautiful question. it seems that you really do want to com close to Allah. um, with regards to startin a new life. my first advice and the best of advice is firstly make dua. make dua to Allah that he makes followin Islam easy for you.

secondly, it comes in the hadith that Allah becomes happy when someone asks for forgiveness. it dont matter what you have done, if you sincerely make tawbah to Allah and promise not to sin again Allah will forgive every single one of your sins. Allah is waitin and waitin for when his servants will turn to him. when someone does, Allah becomes happy and says to the angels 'let him come, let him come'. and he will be like this until you breathe your last. but this, me and u dnt know. so we should start now!!

after this try your best to stay away from sin. if for any reason you are overpowered, seek forgiveness immediately and promise Allah that you wont ever do the sin again. keep on doin this process even if you fall again in the sin. inshallah one day allah will giv you the ability to leave the sin.

frequent the masjid and seek the company of the pious, especially the scholars, from them you will benefit immensely.

try your best to do some good deeds. whatever it is, maybe a few mins of the quran, thankin Allah for a bit, givin a few pennys in sadqah etc. something less is at least something. theres a saying' dnt belittle small things, cus verily huge mountains are made of small pebbles'.

and finally, dnt burn yourself out. i said previously in another thread, if you was to try and jump on the fifth step on the staircase, you wont get anywhere but rather you will end up hurting yourself. so take it step by step. if you do this, you will reach the top of the staircase. in our situation, we will reach the pleasure of Allah. may allah make it all easy for us. ameen.

jazakallah

I am glad you posted this Mirajmom - I was actually thinking about this question myself - how many times (or how long) must we ask for forgiveness for the sins we committ (both known and unknown)?

From ‘Ikrimah that Abu Hurayrah said: “Verily, I turn to Allah asking forgiveness and repenting to Him 12,000 times every day.”

sahaba(rd) of prophet mohammad(pbuh) did a lot istighfar, so how many times we should do because of our sins!
