Salam my brother's and sister's
In my school book "world history and geography", were on the chapter about islam. I read in another place about the word "Jihad" and it said it meant the inner struggle to do what is not wrong(i think it said that) and alot of people mis-interpret that. My text book said this about it though.
" For the sake of Islam, Abu-Bakr invoked jihad. The word Jihad means "striving" and can refer to the inner struggle against evil. However, the word is also used in the Qur'an to mean an armed struggle against unbelievers. For the next 2 years, Abu-Bakr applied this meaning of jihad to encourage and justify the expansion of islam. Under Umar the muslim countries conquered Syria and lower egypt that were part of the byzantine empire."
Now im really confused on the meaning of Jihad since it has 2 meanings. It said Abu-Bakr used the meaning to expand islam so muslim armies took over other countries. My question is that if Jihad has 2 meanings like it said (inner struggle against evil, Struggle again unbelievers) , when is it ok to use the struggle against unbelievers when like when the muslim conquests took countries under Umar.
Thanks for your responses
