Assalamu Allaykum,

I'm taking a speech class this semester..and the speech we currently have to do is Informative Speech. The importance of the speech is to inform the class on an unknown subject, concept, etc. I'm the only Muslim in my class PERIOD not to mention hijabi as well. I think it would be a good idea to do something on Islam or Muslims in general. I'm just worried that the class would be uninterested because I always hold the view that most non-Muslims are opposed or disinterested by Islam and Muslims. But being a Muslim is something I know very well and Islam was something I was born into obviously. So I know this topic well and it would have lots of benefit since it could be a great form of dawah. My question is if I do choose to base my speech on Islam or Muslims...what would be a great aspect to base my entire speech on? Women in Islam...or something more basic...i dont know...

Can you please all share your thoughts? I could really use all the help I need...IA...please help me out :D My speech is on Tuesday!

Islam is a way of life
Dont be worried about it not being interesting. How else do you think Islam is the largest growing religion? YES - Some of them will not care. But what if your words touch 1 person? How amazing, masha allah.

HRRMM...lets see...Good Topics...Let me think...

1) Prophet Muhammad (sallalahu alayhi wa selaam)?
2) The 5 pillars?
3) Explaining our Ramadan and Eids?
4) Talking about Muslim spain and why its now a Cathloic country?

Just some ideas. I'm sure whatever you choose it will be GREAT! :)
If you type it, can you show me a copy? I'd love to read it too!

"Similarities between Islam n Christianity"
..... most of the christian's don't know that the thing they hate about Islam is also mentioned in Bible, insha'allah will act as an eye opener for many. In this u can also cover that hijaab is even mentioned in bible, Prophet :saw: foretold in bible etc. You can listen to Zakir Naik's lecture over the topic.

Since it is a "Speech" class, what about the importance of Tawjeed? While there are many interpretations of the meaning of the Qur'an, some better than others, the importance of proper pronunciation of the actual words can convey more than simple english. As a non-muslim, *I* can tell you that for the most part, the sterotype that most American's hear in regards to the language of the Qur'an is the Adhan...and let me tell you, since I live in a family who have several members who have served in the military in the Gulf, what I hear sometimes is my family making fun of the <as they see it> constant call to prayer. I'm sure you've heard similar things. While to most people, it doesn't sound like language, just glutteral sounds, it takes time for the ear to become attuned to distinguishing the differences. It doesn't take too long though. I started learning by listening to children's Nasheeds and alphabet songs.

So start there or even the Adhan itself. What it means and its history.

Well, it's a speech class, so we must remember the key things your speech will be graded on:

- Choosing a topic, and making sure the topic is not too narrow, and not too broad
- Supporting it with evidence, facts, anecdotes,
- You will need a catchy introduction, a main body with at least 4 sections or subsections, and then a conclusion which ties back to the introduction.

(And of course, you want this to be as a dawah opportunity too) :)

I think why you wear a hijab, would be an interesting topic - (if you're comfortable discussing this with guys present), because this is what all your classmates see all the time - and they are curious, they're just being polite by not asking, or they might all have their preconceived notions about this topic.

Or, better yet: Inform them about a daily routine of a muslim, and tell them how Islam governs everything - how we eat, sleep, pray, study, work, EVERYTHING! How we deal with social situations (hijab would be included in here too), praying 5 times a day.. you get the idea. This would be interesting.

If the speech is in between 5-10 minutes. Then my suggestion would be pick a specific topic rather than general.

Some suggestions: All the suggestion that I had in my mind are pointed out by others except this one,

1) Peace

Inshallah will think more about it..

:salam2: dear sister,

take your chance to call to Tawheed insha'Allah. Speak about it and explain it insha'Allah. The Prophet sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam stayed in Mekka 13 yrs calling to Tawheed and he (sallAllahu 'alayhi wa sallam) also sent Mu’adh to Yemen and told him: "…Let the first thing you call them to be that they perform the Tawheed of Allah, the Exalted (yuwahhidulLaaha Ta’aalaa).

Explain to them the heart of our religion mashaAllah!

Dear sister, Thank Allah SWT that he has given you the chance to speak about our Deen Islam.

exactly! You should talk about the concept of God in islam, specifically
Tawheed, the 99 known attributes and 1 to 1 relationship between Allah and a Muslim. You can find many many verses about Tawhid in the Quraan.

As said above similarities between Islam and Christianity sounds good. Thats if majority are Christian of course.

I would also say doing a speech on women and hijab sounds good, non-muslims always wonder why us women cover our head but some are afraid to ask anything about it. Good luck!

Thank you all for the amazing answers. I put all the ideas into consideration and have decided on.....What is Hijab. One sister pointed out that this is what people see me wear and they probably wonder why I do. I thought it would be a great speech topic. I was originally a bit iffy because I'm not the best at dawah and I was worried if the class would even care...BUT hearing a class mates comment on Muslim atttire and how it brought terrorism in mind AND HOW he thought it was a wrong thinking...but it was a stereotype from Hollywood... made me think! I need to take this opportunity.I need to get this message through and deliver an awesome speech on Hijab. MAKE DUAA!!! PLEASE :D

:salam2: Dear Sister,

What a wonderful choice and your reasons for choosing that topic!! Please allow me to share with you MY experience's with my local Hijabi's.

Locally, we have two Masjids in the area, one that is about 20 miles away and one that is here in town. Recently, at our largest park, I saw 3 hijabi's. One was wearing an Abaya as well. She was with her husband and son along with an infant child in a carrier. The other two were sitting with what I presume to be THEIR infant sons off at a picknick table speaking with two men. I greeted the woman properly but, no matter my desire to do so, I felt intimidated to just walk up to her and start talking to her. Why? I know Islam and have several friends from her whom I speak with and I'm not frightened to speak to them..So why was I so scared to approach her?

I didn't know how I'd be received. It's frightning to just walk up to someone in the first place but to walk up to a person who, in the eyes of an American, is so vastly different from yourself simply to say, "HEY! I'm a friend and I support you even though I'm not a Muslim.". How would the conversation go? Would I be bothering her? Would I make a mistake an insult her unintentionally?

While Islam is a gentle religion, the *strength* of the Muslimah who wears Hijab is frightning. You could say that we just don't know where to step...

May Allah give you courage to speak clearly. May Allah grant you gentleness to reach into the hearts of your classmates and open them up. May Allah Allah bless you in this life and the Hereafter for following your own heart..Ameen.

Would I be wrong to wish you "good luck"? I hope you understand my intentions. Let us know how it goes. I'll be looking forward to reading it!

Thank you! :D I did my speech today (first-one)...I did pretty good BUT I was a little shaky and nervous at first and the words didn't flow as well..BUT overall I enjoyed it. It was nice talking about something you wear everyday and something you know.

Here's my outline if anyone cares to read-

Introduction- See this scarf wrapped around my head? No it’s not a rag, towel, or a mop. It’s hijab. Hijab is the Islamic veil Muslim women all around the world adorn themselves with. You might wonder what it means and why I’m wearing it. Today I will be informing you about my hijab. Everything from why it’s worn, the significance, and the many misconceptions linked to Muslim women wearing hijab. With that all said let me begin.

Main Point 1- In Islam Muslim women are required from Allah (God) to observe hijab. This could be proven in these three verses from the Holy Quran-

1. “O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”

2. “O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the signs of Allah that they may remember.”

3. “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments”

So as you can see from those three verses Muslim women primarily wear hijab out of obedience to Allah (God). Yet there are other reasons such as out of respect and modesty.

Main Point 2- Muslim women wear hijab to protect their modesty and be respected. We wish to be seen for our minds and intellect and not how our body is shaped.

This story relates to this matter. It was narrated by one of Muhammad Ali’s daughters. This incident took place when his daughters came over to his suite for a visit-whilst one of his daughters just so happened to be wearing immodest clothing. It goes like this-

When we finally arrived, the chauffeur escorted my youngest sister, Leila, and me to my father’s suite. As usual, he was hiding behind the door waiting to scare us. We exchanged hugs and kisses as we could possibly give in one day.

My father took a good look at us. Then he sent me down in his lap and said something I will never forget. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Hana, everything that God made valuable in the world is covered and hard to get to. Where do you find diamonds? Deep down in the ground, covered and protected. Where do you find pearls? Deep down at the bottom of the ocean, covered up and protected in a beautiful shell. Where do you find gold? Way down and in the mine, covered over with layers and layers of rock. You’ve got to work hard to get them.”

He looked at me with serious eyes. “Your body is sacred. You’re far more precious than diamonds and pearls, and you should be covered too.”

Main Point 3- With those intentions in mind many still have their misconceptions about Muslim women in hijab. I’d like to shed some light on the misconceptions…

Muslim women are not forced to wear hijab.

We wear hijab outdoors not indoors around family.

Lastly we are not oppressed but liberated.

To conclude, I would like to re-state that hijab is a commandment from Allah (God) to Muslim women. Hijab is something worn out of modesty and self-respect. Lastly, all the misconceptions on hijab are very far from reality.

Thank you for listening.

I wish I said it perfectly, but I think it went well. Most people looked interested except for one old guy in the front with a whole bunch of tatoos and another guy in the center. (they both were glaring at their desks...lol..)

BUT other than that Alhamdulilah! :D

:salam2: Dear Sister!

YOU DID WONDERFULLY!!! I'm so proud! It was wonderful that you were able to use a reference that your American fellow students would identify with, Mohammad Ali and his daughter. EXCELLENT choice!!

Jazakallah khair for sharing it with us and may Allah reward you with ease of studies and a better working relationship with your classmates. Ameen. Inshallah, now, you will feel better support for your choice to follow Allah's commands and inshallah, hearts will be softened towards Muslims in general by your wonderful example.

....and may Allah grant you a wonderful grade for the assignment! :)

Alhamdulillah, I'm so happy your speech went well, sis! I'm especially glad that you worked in Mohammad Ali's quote about how precious things are covered. InshaAllah, maybe you sowed the seed of interest in Islam in some of your classmates.

I hope you get a good grade, and the teacher isn't biased or anything....
