Which is Quran's best English translation/

i know of marmaduke pickthalls,yusuf ali,hilali,etc

what are the merits /demerits of various translations.it is an agreed fact that Quran cannot be literally translated ,but which translation comes nearest in meaning and spirit.

as pickthall himself admits
"... The Qur'an cannot be translated. ...The book is here rendered almost literally and every effort has been made to choose befitting language. But the result is not the Glorious Qur'an, that inimitable symphony, the very sounds of which move men to tears and ecstasy. It is only an attempt to present the meaning of the Qur'an-and peradventure something of the charm in English. It can never take the place of the Qur'an in Arabic, nor is it meant to do so..." so true brother. Quran is best at its own language. subhan Allah.
if you want a weighted translation go for Yusuf Ali
if you want an easy translation go for Muhsin khan
Pickthall is also one the best translation.

This link doesn't lead to verses of the quran. Perhaps you can look into it.

Also, I like the word by word translation on Allah's quran. Helps a non-arabic speaker like me to build my vocabulary as well.

I have heaRD THAT YUSUF ALI TRANSLATION HAS PROBLEMS.
INTERESTINGLY I CAME TO KNOW THAT HE WAS BORN IN SURAT INDIA IN A DAWOODI BOHRA FAMILY.
not implying anything but we should know.
pickthall translations merits are that it does capture some of th poetic eloquence of the quran primarily because englishwas the translators mother tongue.
