Questions & Answers on Innovations

Assalamu Alaikum:

Another danger of bidah is that every innovation that one begins doing, will eventually or perhaps immediately wipe out a true Sunnah. This will end with only bida actions left in the end.....

Besides innovations (Bid'a) among Muslim community Shirk is practiced openly. For an example, I would like to relay a story promoted by Jamaath Aththableeg.

In the name of Ahmed Ibn Hanbal rahimahullaah the story is written and read in their gatherings. It reads as follows:

Once Ahmed Ibn Hanbal rahimahullaah in a dream visited Allaah swt and talked to Him. He (Ahmed Ibn Hanbal) asked Allaah swt that what he should do to reach Him. And Allaah swt answered him to read Qur'an. Then he asked Allaah swt wheter he should read Qur'an knowing the meaning or without. Allaah swt addressed him by his name (Ahmed) and told him to read Qur'an with the meaning or without.

By introducing this story the Author of the book Fadhaail-e-Amal, Zackaria claims, according to the tone of the story, that Ahmed Ibn Hanbal rahimahullaah received WAHY. Naoudu billaah.

While talking the evil of Bid'a, we should not forget to remind the greatest sin that is SHIRK.

May Allaah bless you brother for the nice contribution.

Wassalaam

ASAK Brother,
What you said is true and shocking.
Had you made this statement in a site like sunniforum, this thread would have filled with criticism. Bcoz in india, pak. people of deobandi sect, tablighi people love him so much. they can't listen anything against him.
In it you'll also find stories in fazaile quran. saying "During ramadan imam shafi[ra] completed recitation of quran 60 times and imam abu hanifa 61 times. You also find zakaria sahab mentioning about people who recited quran 6-7 times in 1 day and night. how unrealistic and a proof, that this book contains false and fabricated stories which are braing child of the author himself.

Wassalam.

The meaning of innovation here is in rituals/rites/form of worship, not the conventional meaning of material novelties.

:salam2: akhi didnt your teacher taught you not to speak about things which you are not aware of?

Imam As-Shafi`i. Ibn Rajab and Abu Bakr ibn Abu Taher (may Allah have mercy on them) mentioned that As-Shafi`i would recite the Qur'an (i.e. in Ramadan) 60 times apart from the recitation of Prayers (meaning that he would recite the whole Qur'an one time by day and one time by night).

Imam Abu Hanifah. Ibn Rajab said, "It was reported that Abu Hanifah would do the same (i.e. recite the whole Qur'an 60 times in Ramadan other than recitation in Prayers)."
You also find zakaria sahab mentioning about people who recited quran 6-7 times in 1 day and night.
Its mentioned by imam nawawi(rh) in his al adhkar. ask your scholar who is imam nawawi(rh).
how unrealistic and a proof
Indeed for laymen like you and me, Its unrealistin but not for Friends of Allah.
What you said is true and shocking.
what you said was proven wrong, and we are shocked now.
how unrealistic
let read some more unrealistic act for a laymen which was done by salaf:

1) Uthman Ibn Affan (RA) used to finish the entire Qur’aan in one Raka’aat of Wit’r [Tirmidhi, Qiyamul-Lail, Tabaqaat Ibn Saad, Zailul Jawahir]

2) Tamim Dari (RA) used to finish the whole of Qur’aan in one night [Tahawi, Tahzeeb Wat-Tahzeeb, Zailul Jawahir]

3) Abdullah IbnZubair (RA) used to finish the whole of Qur’aan in one night [Tahawi,Qiyamul-Layl]

4) Saeed Ibn Jubair Tab’ae (RA) used to finish the whole of Qur’aan in one night [Tirmidhi, Tahawi, Zailul Jawahir, Tazkiratul-Huffaz]

5) Imam Shaf’ae (RA) used to finish 60 Qur’aans in Ramadhan [Tazkiratul-Huffaz]

6) Imam Wakee Ibn Jarah (RA) used to finish the whole of Qur’aan in one night [Tareekh-Baghdad]

7) Imam Jarh wat-Ta’deel Yahya Ibn Saeed (RA) used to finish the Qur’aan in 24 hours [Baghdadi, Tahzeebul-Asma Wal Lugaat]

8) Imam Subki (RA) relates that Imam Bukhari (RA) used to finish one Qur’aan during the day and one Qur’aan at Iftaar time and at the time of each Khatam (of Qur’aan) he used to say, “Dawwatun-Mustajaba” [Tabqaat Shaf’aiatul Kubra, Alhitta Fi Dhikr As-Siha Sitta]

9) Imam Ibn Katheer (RA) relates that Imam Abu Haneefa (RA) used to perform his Fajar Salah with the wudhu of Esha Salah for 40 years and at the spot where he passed away he had finished the Qur’aan 7000 times (please note that in some manuscripts it is printed as 70,000 instead of 7,000) [AlBidaya Wan-Nihaya]

1) Imam Ibnul-Haj’r Asqalani (RA) & Imam Dahabi (RA) both relate that Sayyidina Zainul-Abideen Ali Ibn Hussain (RA) used to pray 1000 Rakaat daily till he passed away [Tadhkiratul-Huffaz, Tahzeeb Wat-Tahzeeb]

2) Imam Maumoon Ibn Mehraan used to pray 1000 Rakaat daily and once completed 17,000 Rakaat in 17 days [Tahzeeb Wat-Tahzeeb]

3) Imam Mirra Ibn Sharaheel Hamdani used to pray 1000 Rakaat daily but in his old age he had reduced it to 400 Rakaat daily [AlBidaya Wan-Nihaya]

4) Sayyidina Ali Ibn Abdullah Ibn Abbas used to pray 1000 Rakaat daily [Tahzeeb Wat-Tahzeeb]

hope you were able to swallow it.

May Allah (The All powerful) help us and give us tawfeeq to differentiate between right and wrong !!

regarding salaatul tasbeeh...

There are ahaadeeth concerning Salaat al-Tasaabeeh which are attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and which were classed as hasan by some of the scholars, but may scholars said that they are da’eef (weak) and that this prayer is not prescribed in Islam.

The Standing Committee was asked about Salaat al-Tasaabeeh, and they answered:

Salaat al-Tasaabeeh is a bid’ah (innovation) and the hadeeth concerning it is not proven, rather it is munkar. Some of the scholars mentioned it among the mawdoo’ (fabricated) ahaadeeth.
See Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, vol. 8, p. 163

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said: Salaat al-Tasaabeeh is not prescribed, because the hadeeth is da’eef (weak).

Imaam Ahmad said there is no sound evidence for it.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said it is a fabrication, and he said that none of the imaams recommended it. He (may Allaah have mercy on him) spoke the truth, because whoever examines this prayer will find that it is odd in the way it is performed … Moreover, if it were prescribed, it would have been something that was reported in many reports because of its great virtue and reward. Since there are no such reports and none of the imaams described it as being recommended, we know that it is not proven. The oddness in the way in which it is performed is as described in the hadeeth narrated concerning it, which says that it is to be performed once every day, or once every week, or once every month, or once every year, or once in a lifetime. This indicates that these reports are not sound; if it were prescribed, it would be something to be done on a regular basis, and one would not be given such a variety of options.
On this basis, people should not do this prayer. And Allaah knows best.
Fataawa Manaar al-Islam, 1/203

May Allah give us the tawfeeq to accept the truth and cling to it firmly..

Ameen!!

May Allah bless you Brother...

May Allah bless you brother for sharing such useful content. Indeed Shirk and Bidah are the biggest emeny of Muslim world today, and we all are in some way or the other have been influence by it.

All we could do is ask Allah for protection and guidance.

What we need to do is explain our Brothers and Sisters the Importance of Tauheed. It's not an easy Task as Shaitaan is working day and night to push as much as Muslims towards Ignorance. During my journey of being a muslim in todays world, i have also learn that being polite and humble is the only way to deal with such problem.

The first thing we should do is not look with hatred to Muslim Brothers and Sister who have been become a prey of Sufism. Yes the word Sufism i have used for a specific reason as this sect is by and large have been more responsible for inflicting Islam with Shirk and Biddat.

Our hatred would increase our brothers and sister more in their faith towards shirk and take them closer to hell and anger of Allah. What we need is to hold tight to the Quran and Sunnah and help Muslim community with dialogue on the basis of Quran and Sunnah.

Lets pray to Allah to bring all Muslim Ummah to the religion which our beloved Prophet (SAW) taught us and the Companions followed Peace be upon them all. AAMEEN

My dear brother it is VERY dangerous to make such a claim.

One thing every scholar knows and understands before being allowed to give fatwahs is they must not under any circumstances give fatwahs until they are allowed to do so (by their teachers). Giving opinions is a dangerous thing, and one who is not a scholar does not have the authority of even sharing a fatwah they heard.

According to islamqa, a reliable site if not THE most reliable, it is something you should not do:

islamqa.com/en/ref/14320

Now given this, understanding the religion means understanding what to partake in and what to leave behind. The sound mentality is clear: if there is a difference of opinion on whether it is a sunnah or a bid3aah, it is better that you leave it because the worst case scenario is it is not part of this religion so you are performing a bid3aah. Performing a bid3aah is a serious crime and leads to sin!

If there is a difference of opinion as to whether something is obligatory or is sunnah, the worst case scenario is it is a sunnah and you will recieve the reward of performing a sunnah if you partake in it!

Acts of worship must be clearly defined in the Quraan and sunnah. if there is a difference of opinion on whether something is Sunnah or not then we would do well to leave it behind. For Allaah knows how many hundreds of sunnahs exist that we can start doing that are 100% authentic!!!

And Allaah knows best.

Question And Answers On Bid’ah (Innovation)
Author: Imaam Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen

Source: Majmoo’ Fataawa Ibn ‘Uthaymeen
Published: Saturday 3rd January 2004

Question. What is and what is not a Bid’ah (Innovation)?

Answer: According to sharee’ah, the definition is ‘Worshipping Allaah in ways that Allaah has not prescribed.’

If you wish you may say,

‘Worshipping Allaah in ways that are not those of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) or his rightly guided successors (al-Khulafaa ar-Raashidoon).’

The first definition is taken from the aayah,

“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not ordained?” [Soorah Ash-Shooraa (42):21]

The second definition is taken from the hadeeth of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam), who said,

“I urge you to adhere to my way (Sunnah) and the way of the rightly-guided successors (al-Khulafaa ar-Raashidoon) who come after me. Hold fast to it and bite onto it with your eyeteeth [i.e., cling firmly to it], and beware of newly-invented matters.”

So everyone who worships Allaah in a manner that Allaah has not prescribed or in a manner that is not in accordance with the way of the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) or his rightly-guided successors (al-Khulafaa ar-Raashidoon), is an innovator, whether that innovated worship has to do with the names and attributes of Allaah, or to do with His rulings and laws.

With regard to ordinary matters of habit and custom, these are not called bid’ah (innovation) in Islaam, even though they may be described as such in linguistic terms. But they are not innovations in the religious sense, and these are not the things that the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) was warning us against.

And there is no such thing in Islaam as bid’ah hasanah (good innovation).”

[Majmoo Fataawa of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen, vol. 2, p. 291]

Question: What are the types of Bid’ah?

Answer: Bid’ah may be divided into two categories:

Bid'ah which constitutes kufr (disbelief)
Bid’ah which does not constitute kufr (disbelief)

Questions: What is the definition of bid’ah which constitutes kufr and that which does not constitute kufr?

Answer: Shaykh Haafidh al-Hakamee – rahimahullaah – said,

“The kind of bid’ah which constitutes kufr is when one denies a matter on which there is scholarly consensus, which widely-known, and which no Muslim can have any excuse for not knowing, such as denying something that is obligatory, making something obligatory that is not obligatory, or making something haraam halaal.

Or making something halaal haraam; or believing some notion about Allaah, His Messenger (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) and His Book when they are far above that, whether in terms of denial of affirmation – because that means disbelieving in the Qur’aan and in the message with which Allaah sent His Messenger (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam).

Examples include the bid’ah of the Jahamiyyah, who denied the attributes of Allaah; or the notion that the Qur’aan was created; or the notion that some of the attributes of Allaah were created; or the bid’ah of the Qadariyyah who denied the knowledge and actions of Allaah; or the bid’ah of the Mujassimah who likened Allaah to His creation... etc.

The second category, bid’ah which does not constitute kufr, is defined as that which does not imply rejection of the Qur’aan or of anything with which Allaah sent His Messengers.

Examples include the Marwaani bid’ahs (which were denounced by the greatest Sahaabah who did not approve of them, although they did not denounce them as kaafirs or refuse to give them bay’ah because of that), such as delaying some of the prayers until the end of the due times, doing the Eid khutbah before the Eid prayer, delivering the khutbah whilst sitting down on Fridays, etc.” [Ma’aarij al-Qubool, 2/503-504]

Question: What is the ruling on one who commits Bid’ah is he a Kaafir (disbeliever) or not?

Answer: The answer is that it depends. If the bid’ah constitutes kufr, then the person is one of the following two types:

Either it is known that his intention is to destroy the foundations of Islaam and make the Muslims doubt it. Such a person is definitely a kaafir; indeed, he is a stranger to Islaam and is one of the enemies of the faith.

Or he is deceived and confused; he cannot be denounced as a kaafir until proof is established against him, fair and square.

If the bid’ah does not constitute kufr, then he should not be denounced as a kaafir. Rather, he remains a Muslim, but he has done a gravely evil action.

Question: How do we deal with those who commit bid’ah?

Answer: Shaykh Muhammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen – rahimahullaah – said,

“In both cases, we have to call these people – who claim to be Muslim but who commit acts of bid’ah which may constitute kufr or may be less than that – to the truth, by explaining the truth without being hostile or condemning what they are doing. But once we know that they are too arrogant to accept the truth – for Allaah says,

“And insult not those whom they (disbeliever's) worship besides Allaah, lest they insult Allaah wrongfully without knowledge.” [Soorah al-An'aam (6):108]

If we find out that they are stubborn and arrogant, then we should point out their falsehood, because then pointing out their falsehood becomes an obligation upon us.

With regard to boycotting them, that depends upon the bid’ah. If it is a bid’ah which constitutes kufr, then it is obligatory to boycott the person who does it. If it is of a lesser degree than that, then it is essential to examine the situation further. If something may be achieved by boycotting the person, then we do it; if no purpose will be served by it, or if it will only make him more disobedient and arrogant, then we should avoid doing that, because whatever serves no purpose, it is better not to do it.

And also in principle it is haraam to boycott a believer, because the Prophet (sal-Allaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) said,

“It is not permissible for a man to forsake [not speak to] his brother for more than three [days]”

I would like to congratulate everyone for taking part in religious activties – If you ask questions then you are curious about south correct answers – may ALLAH ALMIGHTY guide to his choosen path.

I would like to refer the Holy Quran – I do not know the exact Ayah – but the essence of the Ayah is as follow –

We have to Follow Allah’s Book , The Prophets Sunnah and if have any questions or queries we are to ask those people are who have the knowledge about these subjects – and Ayuh further goes

“If in doubt – refer back to the Book of Allah and Sunnah of the Prophet”.

We can not follow our whims and desires – and any scholer of Imam who can not produce any evidance about his claim – then to follow his claim would it not be ‘SHIRK’? , no one is above ALLAH and HIS beloved Prophet (may peace and blessing of ALLAH be upon him)
