Germany offers program for extremists to quit

BERLIN — Germany's domestic intelligence service on Monday started a program for Islamist radicals who want to quit extremism, an initiative under which people will be offered help finding new jobs and new homes in Germany.

A spokeswoman for the agency, who was talking on condition of anonymity in line with agency policy, declined to say how much money had been allocated or how many employees were working for the program.

She said that if people seeking to quit are threatened by radicals, the agency would guarantee confidentiality and help with safety measures.

"Our program is an offer for those who want to leave extremism behind," she said. "Once we find out what their needs are, we will develop the program accordingly."

The intelligence service estimates there are more than 36,000 Islamist extremists in Germany, but only a fraction of those are considered potentially violent. The Muslim population in Germany is estimated to be between 3.8 million and 4.3 million — meaning Muslims make up between 4.6 and 5.2 percent of the population.

The program, which is called HATIF — meaning phone in Arabic — also is aimed at family members or friends of people who have come under influence of extremists.

They can contact members of the intelligence service online or call a specific number. The service is offered in German, Turkish and Arabic.

Germany has not seen a large-scale terror attack, but in recent years there have been attempts to commit attacks on public transportation and U.S. military bases.

Countries like Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Singapore have also implemented deradicalization programs in recent years, but they mainly work with convicted terrorists in prisons, while Germany tries to reach out to extremists before they commit a crime, said Peter Neumann, an expert from the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence in London. He said there are no similar programs in other European countries so far.

"We know that in almost all of these groups, there are people who want to leave, but it is not easy to get out of such an environment," he said. "It is great that Germany makes this offer — even though this definitely won't lead to the end of radical Islam in Germany."

The dawah is really going strong in Germany. There are numerous germans, latvs and poles who are accepting Islam. There is an ex-boxer (a revert) who is very active in conveying the message of Islam in Germany (his name escapes me at the moment).

Some of the shuykh who have went from Gulf countries to Germany are being greeted with a rapturous welcome. They have lecture halls filled by hundreds and even thousands at time. Something very encouraging Alhamdulillah

I had the pleasure of being in the company of our imam at the masjid (May Allah azz zawajal preserve him) and some other brothers yesterday. He told us the strength of the Dawah in European countries, which is making their govt. run scared. They are using tactics such as banning burqa, banning minarets, terrorists hotlines as intimidation techniques or to reiterate the negative image of muslims as 'terrorists'/'anti-social ppl' in mind of non-muslims. They also wish to deny giving entry to our religious scholars.

With the will and mercy of Allah azz zawajal, such tactics will only help more people to turn towards Islam and accept the truth.

Wasalaamalaykum waa rahmatullahi

Assalaam walaikum,

They are just scared..their grandchildren will be marrying Muslims. Germany will be a Muslim majority by 2025. Insha'Allah, I will celebrate that day.

Das hoffe ich auch...
There's a lot of racism in Germany-I know because I lived it as a WHITE guy from Eastern Europe living in Germany. It's insane-I think a lot of it has to do with racism; many Germans are still very racist people.
Insha Allah Islam will spread in our lifetime all over Europe. I want a Eurabia, I don't care that they don't.
And to me it seems like everyone is an "extremist" Muslim unless it's one of those apologetic types that appear on the media here. Ridiculous.
