Israel's countdown to another war on Gaza
Middle East Monitor
January 11, 2010

As the Middle East Monitor (MEMO) highlights the human cost of Operation Cast Lead (War Diaries), Israel has during the last two weeks intensified its air strikes at civilian targets in the Gaza Strip, once again killing a number of Palestinians and causing extensive damage to properties. Media and military analysts in the region have discerned a clear pattern of activities that suggest the Occupying Power, Israel, is preparing the ground for another major onslaught into the Gaza Strip.

As was the case in the previous attack one year ago, the Occupier is again interpreting regional or international silence as a 'green light' for its next operation.

What is happening?

The current attacks on the Gaza Strip are all aimed at civilian areas. Other targets include Palestinian resistance positions.

On Friday 1st, January 2010, the Israeli Air Force bombed two tunnels in the Gaza Strip. Palestinians depend on the tunnels for food, medicine and other necessities. Because of the illegal blockade imposed by the Occupier the tunnels have become their main lifeline for survival.

On Saturday 2nd January two tanks fired shells into the area east of the Shuja'iyya neighbourhood of Gaza City and northeast of Gaza City, while military tanks launched several artillery shells at the Shuja'iyya and Tuffah neighborhoods simultaneously.

On Tuesday, January 5th 2010, an Israeli airstrike hit a group of Palestinian resistance fighters in Khan Younis, in south Gaza Strip, killing one and wounding four others.

On Thursday 7th January, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) attacked the Rafah border area, killing three Palestinians, one of the causalities being a 14 year-old boy.

Aerial strikes were also carried out in Gaza City, Khan Younis and Rafah, resulting in huge explosions.

Earlier on Thursday, the Israel Air Force dropped thousands of leaflets over Gaza, warning residents to stay away from the border with Israel and to avoid involvement in 'smuggling'.

Israeli forces completed on 8th January a large-scale military exercise in the Negev, the country's Channel 10 news reported these were in preparation for a military offensive against the Gaza Strip.

An IDF strike east of Deir Al-Balah on Sunday 10th January 2010 has left three Palestinians dead, and four others injured.

How would the operation be carried out?

Israeli media sources citing army officials indicate preparation for the IOF to infiltrate, invade densely populated areas, and use their specialised equipment to target the short-range missiles used by the resistance.

The same sources confirm the recent exercise were conducted with new digital devices installed on Merkava tanks, which would allows soldiers in the units to track troops on the ground in densely-populated areas.

Why now?

There are several possible reasons for the current Israeli escalation:

The government in Tel Aviv is gripped in the midst of a political and diplomatic crisis caused by Israel's growing international isolation. There is increased revulsion and anger with the Occupation's policies, namely its settlement expansion, house demolitions in Jerusalem and desecration of Islamic and Christian sites in the city.

US Middle East envoy, George Mitchell, has recently threatened to withhold loan guarantees to pressure the Occupying Power to halt its illegal settlement activities. This move by the US, Israel's closest ally, is a reflection of the scale of International dissatisfaction and opposition to the Occupation policies.

Added to this is the fact that Netanyahu has failed to bring Mahmoud Abbas back to negotiation table, with the latter still insisting that there can be no moving forward without an end to the settlement expansion policy.

The latest preparations come amid Israeli claims of Hamas acquiring missiles that could target Israeli artillery brigades.

The Outcome

All in all, Israel has become a huge embarrassment and liability to the Western governments that have supported its military Occupation for more than four decades. All those that are seen to be close allies, including the United Kingdom and the United States, are finding this embarrassment a sore point and scar on their international image, especially at a time when they are in dire need of international support with their efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan and most recently Yemen.

Most analysts concur that the failure of the Israel's military invasion last winter has strengthened Hamas as a governing body and boosted its image both within Palestine and across the region. Israel on the other hand emerged from the fiasco substantially damaged, not least after the Goldstone report called for the prosecution of its leadership for war crimes. Their troubles are set to continue for as long as they persist in the illegal occupation of Palestinian land.

Why zionists are like to attack Gaza or Lebanon again?

"maybe not all but a big part of the answer"

Also the process that Turkey initiated with its neighbors is concerning Israel. Building an area of attraction with Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon in Middle East. For the future to take steps of supranational partnerships. Expansion of its influence area, and starting to act as a regional and a global actor is narrowing the field for Israel. Also Turkey is acting to fail the military option against Iran by not supporting and allowing it, and making resistance to prevent new crises in the region, undermines Israel's hand.

In future a possible political, economic and military cooperation under the leadership of Turkey among regional countries is making Israel to loose its sleep. Turkey and Israel's interests do not coincide anymore. As the Turkey extending it influence Israel is becoming more isolated. And so becoming more aggressive. While trying to isolate Iran its becoming isolated instead of Iran. And they see Turkey as responsible for all of these.

Israel used any kind of method including terror to stop Turkey's effort to trying to build structure in the region. Also continues to use. Jewish lobby in the United States, neocons and hired writers even called for a coup in Turkey. Also know what else to do. Intelligence information on this should be in the hands of Turkish security units. Even we hear about the explosives coming from Israel to Turkish cities.

Believe me, after a while, desperation, helplessness increases, it will resort to more dangerous ways. What is this dangerous ways? The ones who understand the character of Israeli intelligence should guess it well.

After today any agression against Gaza, Lebanon will not be the cause of the Hamas or Hezbollah. Politically exhausted, regional influence largely lost, who lost its cards by moves of Turkey one by one, will try to get rid of this situation, to sabotage the new regional partnership..

Israel Loses Its Temper
Thu, 14 January 2010
Hassan Haidar
It seems that Israel is unable to comprehend the transformation that took place in Turkey. Or rather, it did comprehend it but lost its temper because it refuses to believe that it is about to lose a key ally in the region in the blink of an eye. Turkey seems confident, firmly implementing the new course of its foreign policy without clamor or awkward positions like those of Iran. Instead, it deals in its capacity as a regional superpower that relies on its history and present, and seeks to contain the junior players in the region, including Israel.

This issue does not pertain to a vengeful act due to the European Union's continued closed doors before Ankara, but because the latter has rather discovered that it no longer has to pass through the Israeli gate to maintain normal relations with Europe and the United States. The Turkish leaders are convinced that the present and future of their country is contingent upon a strong economy and good economic and political relations with its direct periphery, not upon made-up gates. For this reason, they opened up to Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and Armenia, and opted for a problem-free choice.

They do also realize that the West's mood is changing vis-à-vis its "pampered child." Since the rise of this intruder-state more than sixty years ago, the West has embraced and adulated Israel in order to make up for the atrocities of the World War Two against the Jews and to put an end to its feelings of guilt, as well as Israel's strategic role in the era of international axes as it was a "disciplinary" tool for the Arabs leaning to Moscow.

During all that time, Israel succeeded in playing the role of the victim that is surrounded by enemies from everywhere. As a result, Israel escaped condemnation every time it used its war machine, particularly against civilians. But its barbarity, which was atrociously reflected during the Gaza war, is condemned and denounced today, as Goldstone's report pointed out. As such, the Americans, who insist on the two-state solution that is hindered by Israel, are talking – albeit implicitly – about overcoming the diplomatic pressures and imposing financial sanctions.

Some sides believe that the Americans benefit from Turkey's position and use it as an indirect pressuring tool on Israel. This means that the racist behavior of the Israeli foreign ministry towards the Turkish ambassador was also an indirect message to the Americans in particular, and the West in general; a message to the effect that Israel will not accept anything less than the absolute support to which it has been accustomed.

The Turkish position is very harmful for Israel because it does not bring about Western sympathy through its calmness and firmness, and because in condemning its behavior, this position does not follow the Iranian way of provocation. For instance, Ankara did not deny the Holocaust and did not threaten to annihilate the "usurping entity". It neither considered that Israel will cease to exist, nor did it say that its missiles can reach the strategic Israeli positions or that these missiles are directed at it. All what Turkey wants is that the Hebrew State controls its behaviors and become a "normal" state in the region, one that does not impose itself and its interests by the power of arms, but is rather committed to a genuine peace that gives the Palestinians and Arabs their lands and rights. Turkey's leaders realize how to tease the Israelis. Erdogan talked about the Israeli nuclear power which he considered a threat to the region, which no Western leader has dared to say in public. This is because he knows that the West, which is mobilized against the Iranian nuclear program, cannot object to any statement on the Israeli military arsenal.

Nonetheless, the wishes of some Arabs will certainly not be fulfilled. Turkey disagrees with Israel in the framework of limits and standards which it realizes very well. Its protest is aimed at curbing Israel's political and military positions and will never turn into enmity regarding the very existence of Israel itself.

In my opinion as every individual we need to help Palestinian brothers with financially, spreading their situation, lobbying among people and sure with duahs. We should look for the ways to do it. If we look for, Allah guides us for it. We wil be asked for it also individually Hereafter.

The way out...

I guess we see the beginning of something like a middle east union... And zionists are so stressed now...They could do something very bad and silly to stop that....like attacking Gaza or Lebanon even destroying the Masjeed al Aqsa...They will bring their end themselves.

Also the Europe is tired of supporting them since their old sins in IInd World War. Noone wil help them in that little place. If we can be patient we will also see many leaving that place with their own will. Just be patient and do whatever you can.

I even have Christian friends supporting Palestine... And please lets not use the word of Arab. We also know which country is among the first ones who recognised the Israel. It s my country. But this does not mean the people of these states agree with their rulers.

I pray for all muslim states to forget about problems and see the way out is with being together and to cooperate. If Europeans can do the EU we can do the MU. Any other group of country in the world can do.

^Good for them, they're so stressed out. That's quite dangerous too, the barbarians they can become and our brothers and sisters end up paying for it.

The Jew slaughtering, they've exaggerated it. That's a hoax. Let me just give one example, Anne Frank and her diary. Pens were not widely available (they probably were there, but not widely available. The pilots used them to aid them in their writing while they were flying). Her diary was in pen. You ask if it was even real.

Anyway, the MU, MuslimsUnited?? :D

Muslim Union

Muslim Union I mean:) Sure its name will be different not reflecting the religious identity as EU but they have this hidden. But our union surely has to include christian countries also. And must welcome, absorb and tolerate them to build a long standing structure.
