MANGALORE: Rattled by Aysha Asmin’s burqa episode, the Sri Venkataramana Swamy (SVS) College in Bantwal is now contemplating imposing a dress code in its campus.
Addressing a press meet in the city on Wednesday, college principal Seetharama Mayya and convenor Ganesh Prabhu said that the 41-year-old college had never faced such a situation before. “We will have a dress code within two months,” said the two.
SVS College has been facing flak ever since it prevented Aysha from entering the classroom for wearing a burqa.
Tracing the controversy’s origins, principal Mayya said that the newly elected president of student council objected to Aysha wearing a burqa to the classroom.
Aysha, unlike the other 23 Muslim girls, refused to be cowed down and insisted on wearing the ‘half-burkha’ to the classroom. When the pressure tactics didn’t work, student leaders threatened to wear saffron lungis, black shirts and lungis (as some were Ayyappa devotees) if Asmin was allowed to wear the half-burkha.
“In order to prevent student unrest in the campus, we were forced to enforce a ban on wearing the burqa in classrooms,” said Ganesh Prabhu.
He clarified that Aysha was not suspended from college.
“She can attend the classes if she agrees to remove the burqa,” he added.
Prof Mayya stressed on the college’s secular nature. He said the PU College was headed by a Muslim principal, Prof K P Soofie, and added that 15-20 per cent of the students belonged to Christian and Muslim communities.
The principal, while praising Aysha for her courage, advised her to use her “rebellious streak” in initiatives like “national integration and raising the standard of education”.
