Post of UN Secretary-General: Why not a Muslim Next Time?

The post of UN Secretary General is usually given to a suitable candidate drawn from a particular continent using the principle of geographical rotation. Next, it is Asias turn. It is also incumbent on the Secretary General to give some representation through his person to the beliefs and values of the dominant civilizations of that continent.

Hindu and Buddhist civilizations have been pre-dominant on the Asian continent for more than two millennia. There are more than ten Buddhist states in Asia, namely Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Taiwan, Bhutan, Korea, Singapore, China, Japan and Mongolia. There are two Hindu states i.e. India and Nepal. The total population of Buddhists and Hindus in Asia exceed 2.5 billion. This is a staggering figure that should be taken into account when filling the post of the UN Secretary General.

Since the inception of the United Nations in 1945 there have been seven individuals who have served as the UN Secretary General. They are as follows:

1) Trygve Lie
Country : Norway
Religion: Lutheren Christian Term of Office: 1946 1952

2) Dag Hammarskjold
Country: Sweden
Religion: Christian
Term of Office: 1953 1961

3) U Thant
Country : Myanmar ( formerly known as Burma )
Religion: Buddhist
Term of Office: 1961 1971

4) Kurt Waldheim
Country: Austria
Religion: Roman Catholic
Term of Office: 1972 1981

5) Javier de Perez de Cuellar
Country: Peru
Religion: Roman Catholic
Term of Office: 1982 1991

6) Boutros Boutros Ghali
Country: Egypt
Religion: Coptic Christian
Term of Office: 1992 1996

7) Kofi Annan
Country: Ghana
Religion: Christian
Term of Office: 1997 2006

8) Ban Ki Moon
Country : S.Korea
Religion :Christian ( Unification Church)
Term office - 2007 -Onward

Breaking it down to continental representation, the post of Secretary-General has been held by three Europeans, two Asian (U Thant/Bank Ki Moon), one Latin American (Javier de Perez de Cuellar), and two from the African continent (Boutros Boutros Ghali and Kofi Annan ) primarily on the basis of geographical rotation.

It is also remarkable to note that seven of the eight holders of this high post have been Christians, though drawn from different continents. Only one non Christian ( U Thant ) has held this post. Not a single Muslim has been deemed fit to occupy this position.

They say UN doesnt believe in discrimination on basis of relgion , lab lab laba lab etc etc etc ????

Most of the UN money is coming from the USA. Inculding that USA is one of the 5 great powers that can veto.

That coptic orthodox christian from Egypt, Boutrous Boutros is a war criminal, when he served as head of the United Nations he was siding with with the serbs because they to were orthodox thats why he didn't take any action, and most of the names mentioned here, really have no power if the permemant members of the United Nations veto their move.

assalamu alaykum,

I do not think that it would matter even if he was a Muslim. The UN had Miuhammad al Baradei a Muslim, Egyptian guy for IAEA. He did nothing, could do nothing.

Infact, Muslims have tremendous economic wealth, power, and large number of people!! - But, it is of no benefit at this time. Why? Because we as an Ummah are not united upon the correct Aqeedah and Manhaj. We are not following Islam as pure as possible from the Quran and the Sunnah of the beloved Messenger of Allah, Muhammad :saw: peace and blessings of Allah be upon him !!!

Only when we return to this, beautiful, perfect way of life, will we succeed. Even if we have not even 1 dollar/euro/pound/riyal / Sheep/ Goat!! if that is what you trade with ! in our banks and homes.

Allah is enough for us!! and our success is from Allah alone. This is the message of Quran and Hadith... this is something we must understand and what Muslims must understand.. Islam shows us which way to proceeed, step by step. How to deal with people, how to firstly deal with ourselves!!!! and our families... how to deal with our neighbours, how to deal respectfully with non-Muslims. How to be Just and fair and think and care for other people!!

Without Islam, we are nothing. We are GREEDY, SELFISH, ARROGANT, IGNORANT. This is situation of our Ummah right now.

So, forget this idea of putting a guy in UN or in Parliament. If there is one there who cares about Muslims and makes a difference, then ALHAMDULILLAH.. .very good. Better than having a racist xenophobic mass murderer ;)

But, in the longterm, we must study Islam, teach ourselves, our families and work very hard in this.

We are helping the Ummah RIGHT NOW, inshaALLAH... by making this website, we are uniting ourselves and educating ourselves. We can do many many things to make the Ummah strong. We can go and work in the community or even do something small such as smile and have some kindness for people. If someone has a need or needs help in anything, then give them time as your brother and sister. This is important.

InshaAllah brothers and sisters, think...... :) Islam will NEVER be destroyed, it will remain alhamdulillah. We can be strong once again just as Muslims had a golden period before. It was not due to them being Arab or any race, but being on Islam properly.

assalamu alaykum

Brother Mabsoot is quite right
Jazakallahu kheiran for your post, we need to be united and we must have clear and clean intentions before we embark on the wider issues
we should ask ourselves, are we indeed good muslims, better muslims or are we a good example? are we a muslim or a muumin?
A good and clean conscience makes a better heart and in the end makes a better human being,
The UN is full of politics, there is nothing there.

Because we as an Ummah are not united upon the correct Aqeedah and Manhaj.
we need to change this, we should seriously consider why we are on this earth in the first place, then maybe we will understand our duty towards one another, and also remember we are duty bound to one another ,that is part of being a muslim too. Duty is ibadah.

united we stand divided we fall.

I agree with Mabsoot - even if you had a Muslim, he couldn't do anything. Western powers, especially the US, have the most power in the UN. Nothing gets done without their approval and permission.
