"Yatim" - Short rhyming poem.

Yateer

Sab'a Sita Ethnain
Yatim
By Ahmad Abu Khattab

Others running up to their mothers and fathers,
Greeting each other as if gone for a while.
Staring sadly as you remember your father,
The same hug given to you when you were a child.

Remembering the warmth of your fathers kiss,
Before falling asleep he’ll pamper you with stories.
Telling you how Allah protects the believer,
Reassuring your heart and removing your worries.

Taking the time to teach you how to pray and fast,
Telling you to be fair with the people around you.
Holding your hand whenever you fell sick,
And tying the lace when it was undone on your shoe.

In an instance your life was changed,
Losing your father who was your only friend.
Tears flowing like a river that’s rapid,
No one else for you to befriend.

Prone to mockery by other children,
Laughing at you for not having a father.
Asked if you had anyone to care for you,
You simply replied “no father, no mother.”

Your extended family disown you easily,
Nothing to offer them because you’re poor.
Forced to live in a confining shelter,
You eat and sleep and sit on the floor.

Swearing by Allah that you forgive your family,
Thinking maybe they can’t afford to have you.
Making du’a that Allah will guide them,
Just the way your father told you to do.

Revising Qur’an became your pastime,
While others played in the playground outside.
A ball rolling in to your room through the door,
You hand it to a boy who then pushes you aside.

“Out of my way and don’t touch my things,
Orphan child trying to take my toys.”
You look at him and try to explain your story,
He then goes out to call the other boys.

Surrounding you they each take a turn,
A turn to beat you until you bleed.
Dropping the Qur’an from your soft little hands,
Telling them to stop as you helplessly plead.

The ordeal over as you pick up the Qur’an,
Cursing these boys you surely didn’t.
Opening it up to reveal a verse,
“Indeed Allah is with those who are patient.”

You cried and wept throughout the night,
Wishing that your parents were there.
Just to give you a hug that you wanted,
From people who truly and really did care.

But you accept the fate that has been decreed,
By Allah the One Who protects the believer.
Remembering your father whispering these words,
Cheered you up and suppressed your anger.

People may have abandoned you,
But Islam is there and you remain not fallen.
Loneliness is temporary until you no longer breathe,
Patience a virtue, so be patient O orphan.
