Question about Hijab

I saw two young Muslim girls out shopping with, what I presume to be their mother. They were all wearing head scarves. The mother was dressed modestly, in loose clothing, but as for the girls...even though they had head scarves on they were wearing very tight clothing. They were covered from head to toe but in leggings and tight tops so you could see the complete form of their bodies. I was just confused as to why they were wearing head scarves because isn't Hijab all about dressing modestly?

AssalaamuAlaikum WRWB,

The most important thing for a woman is to hide her shape of body and cover it properly. After that, she should be concerned to cover her arms and neck properly. After that comes the turn of head scarf.

Showing all the shape of body and wearing scarf? It is as if being naked but wearing scarf at the head. Scarf has just become tradition/fashion for many Muslims.

Wearing headscarf with tight clothes is definately not proper hijab. I agree with brother "virtualeye" as well I have to say maybe these girls were teenagers trying to fit into western society while still trying to maintain an Islamic identity....only Allah (SWT) knows. All this aside God judges our intentions as well, He is most merciful, so only He knows the situation beyond what is seen by people

That is how it is for the majority of Kuwaiti woman/girls, say age 35 and under.

Head scarves on, make comments to me about not wearing a scarf, but yet their clothes are painted on, while I dress MORE modestly albeit, without a scarf. As a matter of fact, I dress more modestly than many of them BEFORE becoming a Muslimah.

My husband told me that the word "hijab" means "modest(y)" and that the corrolation of hijab simply meaning headscarf is a relatively new phenomenon (say, since the early 90s). Can anyone else comment on that? I don't know the exact history/structure of the word hijab, but maybe there is someone with an educated command of Arabic can enlighten us.

Hijab is about modesty, but young girls usually think that hijab is just about covering the hair, we need to inform them because they do not know...

wearing t-shirts is not proper hijab either, it goes along the same lines as tight clothing

Loose tshirts is not a tight clothing,if your wear 'M' size, so they wear size 'L' or 'XL'.and socks cover on the elbows.u cant see any.

as long as they not tight till show your belly,or your body,or tight in shirts.close your aurat is important.

For the hijab to be proper, it MUST fulfill the 6 conditions, if one isn't completly fulfilled then it cannot be considered as hijab...

1) clothes should be loose and not revealing the body
2) it should not be transparent
3) clothes should not be resembling those usually worn by the oposed sex (ie: trousers)
4) it should not resemble the clothes of the disbelievers
5) it should not attract the attention of men particularly and finally
6) the awra should be completly covered...

It's not really complicated :)

Clothing is really hard issue while living in the West
Its impossible to find normal, proper clothing.
And All the islamic clothing web sites are expencive...
Everything sold here is transparent and sooooooo tight
Its even harder when trying to fit to a workplace....But still its not excuse to dress like that ,in tight clothing with hijab.

Islamic sites do seem to be overpriced, well we are a niche market after all!

I was sooooo disappointed when i went shopping yesterday and couldn't find ANY long sleeved tops. I thought we are at the end of August so the shops will have the autumn ranges in....nope all blimmin t-shirts and shorts 1/2 price...useless!

I desperately need to islamify my wardrobe before Ramadan....

salam if you wear something that covers your arms with a t-shirt then you are covered, I was talking about hijab and a t-shirt with nothing covering the forearm to the wrist.

"O Prophet, tell your wives and daughters and the women of the believers to draw upon them their over-garments.

That is more appropriate so that they may be recognised and not molested" (33:59).

Is is therefore required for a Muslim woman when she goes out to wear a dress that covers her from head to foot and does not reveal the figure. According to some scholars only the hands and face should be left uncovered, while according to some others the face should also be covered. There are therefore two opinions on this matter.
The onus of modest behaviour however falls not only on women. The injunctions of the Qur'an are directed to men and women alike. Allah says:

"Tell believers to avert their glances and to guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Allah is Informed about anything they do. Tell believing women to avert their glances and guard their private parts and not to display their charms except what (normally) appears of them. They should draw their coverings over their bosoms and not show their charms except to their husbands . . . ." (24:30-31).

I went shopping yesterday too and mashAllah I found a lot of Islamically ok clothes. Many department stores carry modest clothes. What about H&M? They have one that just opened up in Canada (I hear you have many in the UK) and there was lots of options, and they even had cute scarves that can be used as hijabs at very good prices. If you are really stumped then just buy a long modest jacket, I've seen them everywhere. that way you can wear whatever you want and no one will see it. Another suggestion is to buy pants 1 or 2 sizes bigger. Works for me. Also take a look at the second hand stores, you might be surprised at some of the stuff you;ll find.
Happy shopping!

I'm not too much of a skirt person, I love them in really really hot weather, but that's it. With skirts actually I've had some trouble finding good ones in regular mall stores. Many skirts have slits up the side or are just too short. I bought 2 skirts online one from Sukronline and the other from alhannah. If you buy a few items online as oppsed to a whole wardrobe it;s not expensive. And again search second hand stores.
