Wa-alaikum salam

Historically, Muslims have been the most successful in the times where they've been on the highest levels of Imaan. Whenever the something catastrophic occurred in the history of Islam, like the sack of Baghdad or something, it was at times when whan had entered their hearts.

But Christians yeh, they were the most successful when they deviated from their own teachings  unsurprising! since their teachings would lead them to destruction anyway.

:salam2: depends on how a person defines achievements and advancements of a society!!...well in this age usualy these acheivements and advancements are attained by non-muslim societies...which they were deprived of as long as muslims clinged to islam tightly...muslims got advanced and acheived much in very less time, hence produced the most developed societies of the human history...so when muslims got corrupted in their religious practices ALLAH as punishment put the non-believers in the driving seat...and made as backwards and hollow
so what i understand is that...the crieterion of success is different for muslims!!..i.e. for developing a community we've to practice islam in the true sense as sahaba practiced...and we've to learn the build-up of a truly developed society from the rightly-guided successors of Prophet (sallallaho-alaihe-wasallam)only then we can have true acheivements both here and in hereafter!!...for non-muslim societies...the crieterion is to just work hard for this duniya and ALLAH give them what he's destined for them and not what and how much they want!...and ALLAH knows best!!!.

Asalaamalikum,

Islam treats the term ‘success’ in a much deeper and vaster meaning of the
term than simply attaining something as transient as wealth, or fame or
position! Islam treats wealth, or fame, or position in the life of this world
as a distribution of the bounty of the Merciful Lord to any amongst His slaves
as He Pleases, and not a barometer of success! Remember that success or achievement are relative terms.

And the simple formula of success, as stated by the Merciful Lord in His
Glorious Quran, is that one sincerely believes in Allah swt, follows and
stands firm on the Path approved by Allah swt; and he shall achieve that so elusive term and mirage which the world is engrossed in searching day in and day out: freedom from fear and reprieve from grief!

True success is eternal life in paradise. Truly, the shortcomings of this life is nothing more than a test and an illusion to the believers. If you understand this concept, then you'll understand success and the purpose of life. And as for those who worship others besides Allah swt and fall into this trap, the Quran states:

"The parable of those who take protectors other than Allah is that of the Spider, who builds (to itself) a house; but truly the flimsiest of houses is the Spider's house; if they but knew" (29:41)

Those who worship idolaters, who are a victim of money, power, this world and revere gods beside Allah are calling for an artful trap like that of a spiders web which leads them to their death and destruction in this life and the afterlife.

I guess it depends on what do you mean by achievement.

Pagan societies did achieve great material advancements (e.g. the pyramids in Egypt) but this does not count as achievement. It is actually a curse. When we talk about good deeds/achievements we should weigh this according to sharia'a.

Even in the Quran, Allah SWT describe how some societies achieved great power over their environment but they did not watch these bounties and thank Allah for it so it turned to be a curse on them.

:salam2:this is a part of an answer to a similar question,

With regard to the second matter which is the backwardness of the Muslims and the advancement of the kuffaar in the standard of living and worldly sciences, you should understand that their progress does not go beyond worldly matters. As for true knowledge, which is knowledge of Allaah and the Hereafter, they have no share of that. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“They know only the outside appearance of the life of the world (i.e. the matters of their livelihood, like irrigating or sowing or reaping), and they are heedless of the Hereafter”

[al-Room 30:7]

This is also part of Allaah’s establishing proof against them, as He gives them the means that enable them to gain useful knowledge of that which will benefit them and guide them towards the true religion, but they allow themselves to be distracted by worldly matters and they do not benefit from it in such a way as to save themselves and set things straight for themselves in the Hereafter, and so that their worldly affairs would be set straight too. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you (O Quraysh)! And We had assigned them the (faculties of) hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts; but their hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and their hearts availed them nothing since they used to deny the Ayaat (Allaah’s Prophets and their Prophethood, proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allaah, and they were completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!”

[al-Ahqaaf 46:26]

turn to islam

as for those people who abandan religion and still have successful lives!!!..are just undergoing the long period of respite as said in surah maryam...the translation, more or less is..."whoever lives astrayed(not practicing religion),ALLAH gives him respite which is extended, untill he sees(or knows) the thing promised for him"...so its just the delay of punishment...and its mentioned numerous times in Qur'an that what the non-belivers or wrong-doers are enjoying (the successful lives)...they'll earn nothing out of this entertainment when they'll be caught up with punishment....and then they'll not be given respite to repent and to become righteous...may ALLAH help us learning our deen and save us from being astrayed in any way...this age is nothing but an age of fitna and difference of opinions and it will increase tremendously untill mehde and Jesus(A.S.) appear...hope in this centuary!!..
