Salaam alakium wa rahmatullahi

I am trying to figure out what is better to hug a fellow sister or to shake her hands. I don't want to cross boundaries and in U.S. ppl are not so friendly if they don't know you but i want my community of sisters to feel at ease and at home. to feel that no one is judging them but Allah tala

so my question is

Is it better to hug or to shake hands when i see my fellow muslim sister ( or brother for the brothers) what is sunnah

I voted for depends on the situation too. That will get the majority of the votes I think. Salam alaikum.

Asslamu alaikum

It depends on the situation,if it has been long time without meeting or if she is a close friend then it's a hug.

but what is sunnah.....? i guess i going to have to look it up in a hadith collection. I guess I just feel like the sisters are soooo distant but I guess that is a attribute of females...females are catty

I'm wondering what the sunnah is too..I find it hard to believe that the 3 kisses thing is Islamic although I could be wrong..I always feel like I must be in Paris or something when they do that. I even feel strange with the hugging and the handshakes. Handshakes are supposed to be for meeting people for the first time or sealing a business agreement. I just go along with it but don't know if it all originates from Islam or not.

It is from the sunnah to shake hands. I do not know about hugging.

Malik :: Book 47 : Hadith 47.4.16
Yahya related to me from Malik from Ata ibn Abi Muslim that Abdullah al-Khurasani said, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'Shake hands and rancour will disappear. Give presents to each other and love each other and enmity will disappear.' "

Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 5193
Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: Two Muslims will not meet and shake hands having their sins forgiven them before they separate.

Dawud :: Book 41 : Hadith 5192
Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib:
The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: If two Muslims meet, shake hands, praise Allah, and ask Him for forgiveness, they will be forgiven.

Bukhari :: Book 8 :: Volume 74 :: Hadith 279
Narrated Qatada:
I asked Anas, "Was it a custom of the companions of the Prophet to shake hands with one another?" He said, "Yes."

I remember being advised through the words of the `Ullema IN the Islamic lands, that hugging everytime you see someone is from the ways of the kuffaar. If one is journeying or something, then obviously hugging is also accepted. But in Uni you see all these brothers hugging when they meet and depart, to the extent that you end up hugging the same bro 3 times a day? This isn't correct, alhamdulillaah I advise the ikhwaan when I can on this, but since I forgot my sources for this. So if someone can help me here I'd appreciate it!

EDIT: I found this...

A person asked the Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam): When one of us meets his bretheren or his friends should he bow for them? The Prophet said: No. He asked: Should he hug them or kiss them? The Prophet replied: No. He asked: Should he shake their hands? The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said: Yes. [At-Tirmidhee]

Some of the `Ullema have said that the sunnah is to indeed shake hands upon meeting and not so much on departing. Notice how the above ahaadeeth specify meeting and departing.

Anyway, Shaykh Muhammad Baazmool, may Allaah preserve him, said that shaking hands has no foundation in the religion. Thinking it is apart of Islaam is an innovation as is doing it all the time. But as for doing it with the intention that it is not from Islaam then that is fine. Brother Moosaa Richardson, may Allaah reward him mentioned this (after he spoke to the Shaykh) in another forum.

Bismilah,

The solution to the above is to follow the sunnah. That's it.

it depends
i hug my friends and relatives and my brothers & sisters(siblings) when i havent seen them for quite a while.
and shake hands at the same time.
infact it is like a custom here, in the village when you go visiting, uncles and aunties all hug and shake hands and kiss all at the same time :)

You are right how can hugging be given to gays.

Hand shake is better but some times Hug can also do.So in my view there is not a big problem with Hug .But there is a problem with Kiss.

Hand shake is better .Hug some times.Kiss NO WAY.

U r right .Hand shake is good .Hug is also not that much bad.

I dont mind if my aunt or some one elder Kisses me.

But Kissing with age fellows is some thing that I find WEIRD.

So I vote for DEPENDING UPON CONDITIONS.

If I meet some one stranger i would always shake hand .

If I meet my old friend or my cousin then I would Hug.

If I meet some one elder and he kisses me then thats not a problem.

If i meet my little nephews then I kiss them.

I voted for it depends because i believe that not all the time you should hug a sister or family members
sometimes they just need a hug to show them that you are there for them.
sometimes they feel like killing you when you hug them. so i think it depends
