Reciting in salaat, what determines the length?

Asalaamu alaikum -

I know that the first rakaat of any of the fard prayers is longest; as one friend explained it to me that gives late comers time to arrive (not sure if this is sunnah or whimsy but it sounds nice).

I also know that during Fajr prayer the recitation is generally longer: the time it takes to pray 2 rakaats of Fajr that I've prayed in congregation often matches Isha in length (usually about 15 minutes).

One of the brothers at my masjid said that there's a certain number of ayat that is expected per rakaat but he said he didn't know the ruling.

Can someone enlighten me?

Its mentioned in Fiqh us Sunnah by Shaykh Sayyid Sabiq rahemahullah that t he Prophet sallahu alyhi wassalam would read sixty to one hundred verses during the morning prayer.

here is the question: is it acceptable to recite 1 ayah in one rakaa
هل يجوز قراءة أية في كل ركعة

Now I heard a QA giving by another source, where it must be 3 ayat, didn't matter on length. The reason given is because the smallest surah is 3 ayat. I will try to see if I could find it, in sha Allah

this troubled me as I didn't think I explained it right, and there needs to be more consideration.

when you learn tajweed, you will learn allowable stopping, in sha Allah.

they basically are 2:


  • First type: In this type two conditions must be met. one is relative context(complete meaning) and the other a complete sentence between the ayah and the following ayah, if it is not completed in the first ayah already.
  • Second type: The end of a surah.
so these will simplify it. There are cases when one ayah will meet the first type, thus 1 ayah. Thus according to what the sheik said, may Allah heal him and bring him to good health, it would be permissible to even recite one ayah, but do keep in mind the cases where 1 ayah meet the condition, it may just be longer than like surat al-kawthar or similar length.

I posted this to clarify, that you can't just read ayah #2 of surat al-kawthar(surah 108). It would not satisfy the first type.

It is more rewardable to make the Rak'ah longer, especially FAJR, Dhohr and Asr or Eisha Prayers.

Here in KSA, the Imaams used to read Surah As-Sajdah and Insah during FAJR prayers on Fridays - I've heard that this is the practice of our Beloved Prophet (SAW)...

Also, Imams here in KSA used to more verses during Eisah and Fajr prayers and shorter during Maghrib Prayer.
