New Revert 2010
As Salamu 'Alaykum,

One of the biggest problems for most reverts such as myself is that most of us can read Al Qur'aan in Arabic. Therefore we have to rely on translations of Al Qur'aan. Here is a perfect example:

“You who believe! Do not take the Jews and Christians as your friends; they are the friends of one another. Any of you who takes them as friends is one of them. Allah does not guide wrongdoing people.” (Surat Al-Ma’ida, 51)

Now I assumed that this was a reliable translation of Al Qur'aan. However, according to this explanation actually means something quite different.

So, I may or may not join your group; however, I would do so only for Da'wah since I have spent nearly a decade investigating other religions and only in Islam (and to some extend Sikhism) have I found a religion to which my beliefs conform.

I don't want to high jack your thread, but I would appreciate some of the more knowledgeable Muslims to let me know if the explanation on the linked site is accurate.

:salam2: Facebook is a big fitnah and should be avoided at all costs. It is a waste of time and will cause more harm than good to join. Once joined then shaythan will play havok on a person because be-friending the opposite sex is a normal thing on facebook and this evil should be avoided. Ones imaan is more important. If you want to do good then do so in a better medium not in a place of fitnah like Facebook.

That's a matter of opinion. My opinion is that it depends on the one using it. I use Facebook to keep in contact with my family. The majority of my friends are Muslim brothers. I also have shuyuk such as Bilal Philips and Yusuf Estes and others as friends who use it effectively. My masjid uses Facebook to advertise to non-Muslims about our upcoming Open Houses.

I do agree with you that it can be time consuming and it can become a fitnah if used wrong, but that's where self control comes into play.

And Allah knows best.

aselemu aleikum..indeed every thing can be either used wisely..or abused...and i think facebook is one of those things..however...ill speak for myself, i prefer not to come visit such sites, simply because i want to avoid any temptations..im only human...and its sooooo easy and almost inevitable for a brother or sister to come in contact with the opposite sex..and i know, this isnt directly bad or haram...one can have contact wisely and fearing ALLAH, but still for me....i know for a fact it might lead me to have haram contacts...maybe not instantly..but maybe yall more steadfast then i am..allahu 3alam

Facebook is not haram. It depends on the user. Its like saying the the knife is haram. If you're using it for the correct purpose then its fine.

But of course, avoiding it is the best.
